Mmm ... Tangy Taffy. I remember they came in wide, flat slabs as big as a candy bar. Grape, cherry and strawberry. We used to eat these after swimming at the lake. Mmm ... so tangy!

I always got the grape taffy, frozen, at the public pool.

This was my favorite candy of the 80s hands down! I think the strawberry was even called Wild Strawberry? It was my favorite but I loved all 3! I have yet to find it that tasted like this did. The new Tangy Taffy is not the same thing.
Tony - March 24, 2009 - Report this comment
Tangy Taffy is still around its now under the Laffy Taffy name the small laffy taffy's are bad but the big bars are exactly the same as tangy taffy..you can get them at some 7-11's

I need to figure out how to make this stuff since it isn't being sold anymore. Anyone have any clues? I found a recipe for another discontinued favorite - Callard & Bowser Licorice Toffees that is very close to the original.. Now I just need one for Grape Tangy Taffy and I'll be set.

Mmmm ... grape tangy taffy.
JoyBoy - May 09, 2009 - Report this comment
Laffy Taffy is just like Tangy Taffy.
SZA - May 10, 2009 - Report this comment
Maybe in taste, but it doesn't come in a gigantic bar like Tangy Taffy used to.
PaulH - November 28, 2009 - Report this comment
Here's the scoop. Tangy Taffy is still around. There are TWO types of Laffy Taffy. What you want is "Laffy Taffy Stretchy & Tangy". It's the same stuff as we ate in the 80's! I confirmed this with Nestle and have been eating it for the last few weeks!! Hope that helps.
Mike S - December 17, 2009 - Report this comment
"Laffy Taffy Stretchy & Tangy" is not the same, I lived off of Tangy Taffy when i was a kid and tried "Laffy Taffy Stretchy & Tangy" and it is not the same. Laffy Taffy Stretchy & Tangy is bland and has none of the bite that Tangy had.
dwclk - December 20, 2009 - Report this comment
They still sell Tangy Taffy here in NC!!!
lunchbox - February 06, 2010 - Report this comment
PaulH and some others are right. If you tried Laffy Taffy and it wasn't the same, you may have bought the wrong one. I'm not sure why they have 2 different recipes, but they do. You must buy the bar that is the same size you remember as a kid (about 2x6 inches, 1.5 oz.). It comes in Grape, Strawberry, Cherry, and Watermelon and has a picture of a goofy monster on the front. Grape and Cherry taste almost exactly like Tangy Taffy used to, but Strawberry and Watermelon seem to lack some of the bite they had. However, the smaller bars and the rope size taste the same as Laffy Taffy has always tasted even though you can buy some of the same flavors. Far to sweet and no "tangy".

I'm SAD! I have been buying stretchy and tangy taffy at our local drug store and bought it tonight and ITS DIFFERENT! Its SWEET!!!! What happened?
Todd - March 07, 2010 - Report this comment
The best flavor was orange. It was always hard to find. I remember Worlds of Fun in Kansas City always had the orange and I would be a bunch.
Derek - March 12, 2010 - Report this comment
You can get Tangy Taffy at NationwideCandy.com yes finally found it after hours of searching!
Matt - March 22, 2010 - Report this comment
I agree with Todd... the Orange flavor was my favorite as well and really hard to find back in those days. I was lucky to have a local convenient store growing up in a small town north of Boston that carried them. I remember the bars being a lot wider back then and the packaging being a white color. Fun memories!
Vincent - May 04, 2010 - Report this comment
Orange Tangy Taffy...wow...it was so good. At 32, I still pick-up some of the "Laffy Taffy" grape & cherry "bars" every once in a blue moon. I aggree with the above post that those two flavors seem to use the same recipes as back in the "Tangy" days. Too bad the Laffy folks won't bring back the orange-bar flavor...

The Grape Tangy Taffy was THE BEST candy EVER!!! I hate that Wonka discontinued it. :-(
John - August 19, 2010 - Report this comment
I would buy these at the hospital snack bar near my house. In my mind it was about the same size as a Big Hunk bar. It was sour and stretchy but still very flavorful. I remember the sunshine guy on the wrapper and thought that was the manufacturer's logo. I've missed this candy more than once since then.
SZA - August 20, 2010 - Report this comment
Haha, John that's funny - in my childhood mine I also thought that Tangy Taffy was HUGE. I would love to be able to see how big it actually was again.
Marianne - October 09, 2010 - Report this comment
Recently my children asked what my favorite candy was as a kid. I told them cherry flavored Tangy Taffy. I immediately got a huge craving for the stuff. Thanks for the input above, but I hesitate to buy a huge box as I am afraid I will be disappointed. Anywhere local that I could still find it?
Gary Napoli - October 14, 2010 - Report this comment
Rite Aid has the big bars. I think only cherry.

The only Laffy Taffy that is the same as Tangy Taffy is the Sparkle Cherry Cereza and it can still be found at Meijers gas stations. It has the crystal sparkles on it like the old ones used to and it is forkin delicious!
Bridget - December 27, 2010 - Report this comment
Wow, no one else I know eats this stuff. Thought I was the only one! I have to say that the big bars do taste to me like the old grape and cherry except the cherry one now has sprinkles on it which I can tolerate but would rather not have. I don't remember them ever having sprinkles but a poster said they used to. I just bought a strawberry one and never had that flavor before. I only remember them in grape and cherry. More and more gas stations are beginning to stock them now. Whenever I see them I always buy several.

I miss this stuff sooo much, I didn't know they stopped making it. I would go into all of the candy stores that sold throwback candy. Never did find it. Cherry and Watermelon. They were my favorite. Laffy Taffy...too waxy. Blah.
Tim S - April 19, 2011 - Report this comment
I just bought a Cherry Laffy Taffy and it is exactly the same as the old Cherry Tangy Taffy. I didn't want to believe it at first but, after a few bites, I am convinced it is the exact same formula (or very close).

Tangy Taffy and Laffy Taffy are two completely different tastes. I look for Tangy Taffy everywhere; its hard to find! The watermelon with black candy seeds is my favorite!

Oh man Tangy Taffy was my favorite candy tooo! I would get one everytime we went to my brothers high school football games. Wow I haven't seen it in such a long time. I have tried all those other taffies but they just don't seem the same to me. They are ok but just not the same. I wish they would just bring it back just one more time exactly the same as back in the day.
Crux - July 14, 2011 - Report this comment
I remember when I got the munchies and went to 7-11 and would buy watermelon and cherry - Take 2 each out of the wrappers and stack them together and twist at each end until it was like a rope. Bite off a piece so big I would drool - mmmm!
sharon - August 23, 2011 - Report this comment
Laffy Taffy is NOT the same. It sucks. I miss the real stuff! I forgot about the watermellon with the seeds. That was awesome.
Philip - October 11, 2011 - Report this comment
Laffy Taffy is NOT anything like Tangy Taffy, laffy taffy is too sweet, too thick and the flavors are not the same. Air Heads come closer but are still not right. Tangy Taffy was pressed super thin and had a tart quality to them, much like a Sweet Tart, The watermelon with (complete with seeds) was by far the best, followed by the Cherry.

They started selling Zots again! I love the fizz in the middle. Anyone remember those?

Go to the Wonka website, go down to the bottom and click 'contact us' and send them a comment. Tell them to bring it back!

I'm sooo sad that the company is out of business. My favorite was the cherry. It was the only thing I would get as a treat wherever we'd go. I made it last forever. Frozen would break in a hundred pieces. Is the Wonka Stretchy and Tangy cherry the same flavor? I dislike their laffy taffy. Perhaps someone could buy the recipe and reproduce it in the old-fashioned candy stores. I also loved marathon bars, remember those?
Debbie - June 25, 2012 - Report this comment
"Sunline was sold to Rowntree Mackintosh of the UK, which was then bought by Nestle. Nestle maintained the Sunline brand for a while and only recently has rolled the SweeTarts, Pixy Stix, and Lik-M-Aid into the Wonka brand, which already had a strong line of sugar candy, such as Tart 'n' Tinys, Nerds and Runts." So Nestle does have the recipe. I wonder if they changed the recipe then if people do not agree that the big tangy bars are the same.

I just spent $30 on amazon buying a pack of the 1.5 oz "tangy & stretchy" grape bars. I can't wait for it o arrive. The grape laffy taffy is just gross! A dollar per bar seems steep, but it beats the gas station prices.
Clark - September 30, 2012 - Report this comment
Laffy Taffy (Stretchy & Tangy) is very close to the old Tangy Taffy taste. However, the taste is not consistent. I recently bought four bars -- the large ones -- and three had that nice old school sour taste and one had the typical Laffy Taffy taste. From the same box. Anyway, the best old Tangy Taffy taste was orange which I haven't seen anywhere in over a decade.

The had a flavor blue raspberry with sprinkles which was my favorite. It was around the time when they had the monsters on the package. I wish i could recall but I don't remember every trying the orange flavor. For some reason I feel like the bars with the monsters on it were a lot bigger then for instance laffy taffy stretchy & tangy.

Tangy Taffey CHERRY for sure. It was the best. I used to buy it when I lived in California. I thought I would try and order some for this Oct 31, 2013. Ithought it would be a real treat for those who have never had it. Laffy Taffey is awful. Sad to read it's been discontinued.

I just had a craving out of nowhere for some taffy I used to eat and couldn't remember the name of. All of sudden I remembered. I just looked online for it and this is what I found. :(. I believe it would be a good money maker to bring it back in its original form (exactly). Most candy doesn't taste the same anymore. Sadly! If anyone finds it please let me know!
Michele - March 16, 2014 - Report this comment
I buy it at HEB and the sometimes you find it at random gas stations here in Texas. Her is where the confusion is, originally it was made by Ralston Purina out of St. Louis. Willy Wonka bought it out and started calling is Laffy Taffy. However, it is nothing like the small little Laffy taffy or the long skinny ropes of Laffy taffy. It is the original Tangy Taffy that we all know and love. It is in a long rectangular bar just like before. They have cherry, grape, strawberry, watermelon with and without seeds and strawberry banana. It is the same recipe as the original. I am a tangy taffy expert. Trust me! Sadly, no orange flavor which was one of my favorites as well.
Linda - June 15, 2014 - Report this comment
They still sell it in cherry strawberry and grape. It's under the name Laffy taffy. The small laffy taffy's are sweet, and yucky. But the big bars are still tangy just like the original Tangy taffy. But does anyone around here remember when they had orange, and lemon flavors? Now THOSE were awesome!

I've been craving tangy taffy. U can't find it anywhere anymore. The last place that used to carry it was Wison Farms. A chain of little convenient stores. I miss it!! They always discontinue the good stuff

ya...big ones at the gas station are pretty close to the original TT... small ones are the same as the old laffy taffy...IMO no good. We used to take them, still in the wrapper and just room temp, and smack them on our desks in jr high...they would shatter into perfect pieces. Nostalgia at its best...

DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE :( As Michele pointed out Tangy Taffy was made by RP and was subsequently merged later. The Willy Wonka "Stretchy Tangy" variety of the Laffy Taffy brand is close to "Tangy Taffy", but does differ generally. I will miss "Tangy Taffy" as I know you all will. [trumpet playing Taps]

Tangy Taffy was my all time favorite. I am eating Laffy Taffy, but it does not compare to Tangy Taffy. The texture is different and it does not have the same Tangy bite to it. I wish it still existed. I miss you TANGY TAFFY! ☹

Sunline of St. Louis first marketed Tangy Taffy when 1970 began. As strategy of getting kids to buy the product, Sunline bought licensing rights from Archie Comics to use the original five characters on packaging (bar wrappers and display boxes). Archie (cherry), Veronica (vanilla), Reggie (raspberry), Betty (banana) and Jughead (grape). Licensing deal ended in 1971. Marketing was limited to about 10 states in the early period. eBay has a Veronica vanilla display box for sale. With shipping, $200. Each Tangy Taffy bar was a nickel, or $1.20 for a full box of 24.

Where can I get some Tangy Taffy???
Rob Lambert - August 28, 2018 - Report this comment
It's been near 20 years since Tangy Taffy was produced. The Willy Wonka company last made it, after gaining the rights to it from Sunline (1993), which had bankruptcy issues in the end. Wonka, I believe, is in the Nestle-Kraft-Heinz family.
Rob Lambert - November 24, 2018 - Report this comment
Nearly six months after my initial story, the Veronica vanilla display box is still on eBay. Not only hasn't it sold, but the seller raised his price to $300, even offering time payments. Granted, these boxes are scarce, but a 50% hike won't sell it. An Archie cherry box recently auctioned for $175. Slogan on Tangy Taffy box: It's Chewy Good!

Hello Tangy Taffy livers, 1). The package ingredients are listed on an original picture of a Tangy Taffy package on Pinterest at https://pin.it/mssp3libjk7uxo. 2) Here is a Tammy Taffy recipe from from “Wilde in the Kitchen” at http://wildeinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2013/11/grape-tangy-taffy.html?m=1 . I’m planning on making the recipe as directed, but may substitute the sugar for corn syrup and the butter for coconut oil with subsequent batches to stay truer to the candy’s ingredient list. If you are a candy / taffy expert, I’d like to know your thoughts about this recipe and substituting based on the package ingredients. Sincerely, Stephanie Ann Fields Carson

A new YouTube video is out! Mistakenly titled, "1970's Sunmark Richie Rich Tangy Taffy Candy Wrapper." It's actually the Jughead grape one by Sunline, 1970. The guy removes it from a mailer, showing the wrapper up close. The ingredients clearly readable. Customers instructed to "Bite It" or "Break It" before eating. Richie Rich may have been on Tangy Taffy in the 1980s, when there was a Saturday cartoon show featuring the Harvey Comics character.
