I've said it before and I'll say it again. commercials of the 8o's were so much more involved. I still remember the crazy comercial for this candy when it first came out. Kinda sticks with the memory like those darn Twisler's Lips.

This candy was my criminal downfall. When I was about 6, I went to Girl Scout camp for about 4 days. On the last night, we had a cook-out with hamburgers, etc. At the end of the condiment/serving table, there was a box of candy bars. I thought they were dessert and picked one up. Later, I found out they were 50 cents each to buy. I was too ashamed and embarrassed to take it back up to the table and admit that I had mistakenly taken it without paying. So, I palmed it in my hand and threw it down the latrine to hide the evidence. I felt too bad to eat it, but felt I needed to get rid of it anyway. Weird. I still feel bad about that...

My brother and I had the whole commercial memorized! For my 37th Birthday last month he sent me an e-card with a talking squirrel that spoke whatever you typed...you guessed it, the whatchamacallit ad. Great memories!

I remember my mother buying me one of these on a cold day while we were living in San Francisco. Was underwhelming at the time.

Whatchamacallit sure was a favorite for my husband! He knew I didn't like them but he'd buy two at a time so he could eat both.

It was the best candy in the world until they added caramel. Please take the darn caramel out.

I agree about the caramel comments. I loved the bar until they added caramel. My husband only remembers them with the caramel. Thank you for proving "I'm right!"

I agree. They ruined it with caramel. They sometimes do a "original version" of candy bars. You have to keep your eyes open. Does anyone remember the cousin to the Whatchamalit? I believe it was the Thingamagig?

So many folks of discerning taste here! I agree wholeheartedly, the caramel absolutely ruined the bar, drowning the subtleties of flavor and texture with a crude blast of characterless sweetness. Anyone old enough to remember the Mars bar before caramel? It was just vanilla nougat, almonds and chocolate, just a little less sweet than the alternatives, and one of the more sophisticated and nuanced candy bar experiences available to the suburban child of the early 70's. Then they put in the stinkin' caramel, and now it tastes like a Snickers, or any other of a myriad similar sugar bombs. Who are these people? What's with the caramel?

I remember when these came out, I was in 1st grade & traded a girl named Ruby a new coloring book for her candy bar. I ate the whatchamacallit & took back my coloring book.....I'm not proud of it, but it was good!

Used to have an Abott & Costello routine in high school in 1982 and 1983 about this candy. You know, like a who's on first routine. Get it? "You know the candy, Whatchamacallit. I know, but what' the name?

Then they ruined it even more by not using any milk chocolate. No cocoa butter anymore. Notice it doesn't say "milk chocolate" on them anymore.

I knew it just tasted slightly different...
