Description
Mostly aimed at young girls, they were a rock group. Another in a long string of cartoons based on action figures or the other way around. A Barbie/Cyndi Lauper hybrid. Jem and the Holograms were a band and she had glowing earrings when you pressed a button on the back of her head or something. Came with a tape.

I remember having Jem dolls and playing with them when I played Barbies... I just remember them being a lot bigger than my Barbies and their feet were flat.
Jenna - May 05, 2007 - Report this comment
We played barbies a lot..and had the Jem doll as well. She was a lot bigger so none of the clothes fit her. But her earings did light up so that was a plus in the Jem column.
Jubei - June 18, 2007 - Report this comment
Yeah, Jem was huge. She was very masculine. Barbie's cross dressing cousin.

I still have one of their gold jumpsuits. It's on one of the barbie dolls I gave my daughter but it's so big on Barbie the top falls down all the time.
Stacey - July 18, 2007 - Report this comment
I loved Jem. I also use to play with them with my barbies.

I so loved jem back in the day; I had one and I loved when you turn the switch on and the earrings would light up. You thought you were so cool when you had one.

Ha Ha. I'm 3 1/2 years older than my sister and she was into Jem. One day my stepsister and I were making fun of her (although my stepsister is actually younger than my sister) and we threw the jem doll on the very top shelf of the closet, with the earrings on! Score! The batteries died and couldn't be replaced, I don't think. My sister still brings that up from time to time. I'm 31 now and she just turned 28.

I LOVED Jem! The coolest thing was the streaky pink hair and how huge she was. Ken could wear her high heels and he even fit into some of her clothes. Of course, Ken was never very masculine anyway.

OMG, this is soooo funny. I had the purple haired doll and we re-named her Fritz and put Kens sneakers on her. I still have the tape. Who's cooler, Jericha or Jem?
Kelly - August 30, 2007 - Report this comment
One year I asked my mom to let me get my hair cut like Aja, the one with blue hair and crazy layers. Good thing she said no. LOL

I loved Jem and the holograms i used to have Storma the one with the blue/purple curly hair and my sister had Pizaz (not sure how to spell!) the one with the florescent green hair, i can remember how bigger they were compared to a normal barbie doll and there hands and feet used to move..my Storma doll lost one of her hands haha!!

I used to pretend Jem was Barbie's mom. I loved the cartoon.

Does anyone remember the doll that came out and was supposed to be Jem's Cousin? I had Jem, the cousin doll who's name I can't remember and rio. Also had the car who's trunk you could open and put in a battery that played the radio...god that was great

I remember singing the song for their cartoon with my brother and sister. And it's true they were larger thena the Barbie and feet were flat but they were still my favorite doll. When I was 5 I wanted my hair to be pink!!! I wish they would come back.

When I was 6 and my brother was 10, my dad had to go to work early in the morning and he would drop us off at his and our mom's friend's house who would watch us. I would watch the opening to Jem and then the title of the episode, and then fall to sleep since I was so tired and I would miss the show. Never had the dolls. Saw the show on Youtube. Truly outrageous!

Wow, I had most of the Holograms (Jems crew) and the Misfits (her "bad" rivals)! LOL I actually had 3 different Jem dolls, the original Jem/Jerrica, as well as the glitter n' gold Jem and the flash and sizzle Jem. I had the guy doll Rio, and glitter n' gold Rio. Someone above mentioned the car with the trunk that had the real radio... I had that too, it was called the glitter n' gold Roadster. The Holograms were: Aja (blue hair), Shana (purple hair), Raya (pink hair), Kimber (red hair). Along with Danse (their choreographer) and Synergy (Super Computer, purple skin and hair). The Misfits: Pizzazz (bright green hair, leader), Roxy (White hair), Clash (purple hair), Stormer (blue curly hair, she was always my favorite), Jetta (Black hair). Each of the dolls came with a cassette tape with the main theme song and a couple songs of "theirs". Jem tapes were white and misfits tapes were black. Funny. LOL Most of them also had instruments. Also another cool thing that was mail order only was the Jem Llama. My sister and I each had one and they were really cool with pink fuzzy fur. I was really into the Jem dolls. Can you tell? LOL I remember watching the show on TV as well, but that was after I had been into Jems for quite awhile.

I still have my Jem doll with the pink sparkly dress, the blue striped dress, and the silver belt. Her earrings still light up, and I still have her shoes. I also found a couple choose-your-own-adventure books featuring Jem and the Holograms! I love it!!

I bought the Jem doll with the light up earrings for $1.25 at a thrift shop...no clothes though.
Maryann - March 02, 2008 - Report this comment
Jem dolls were only 1/2 inch taller than Barbies (12 inches compared to 11 1/2) but their arms and legs were longer and their chests were much smaller so the clothes didn't fit Barbies. I loved the Jem Star Stage that looked like a bright pink and white striped keyboard and opened up to a stage w/ stands and microphones for the dolls. It had a cassette player on the side for the tapes that came with the dolls. Me and my sisters had a "battle of the bands" where Jem and The Holograms TEAMED UP with The Misfits to beat out Barbie and the Rockers! There was a huge catfight among all the dolls in the end that turned into a real fight among us siblings and my mom took the dolls away for days!! Ah, memories...

I know my mother spent quite a bit of money on these doll. I had all of the Holograms and the Misfits. I would often try to use them on the Barbie Rockers stage. Never worked they were just to big. I wish I could find all of my childhood toys and give them to my 6 year old.

I LIVED for the cartoon! I watched it religiously. My neighbor had almost every doll. (She was kind of a brat.) Then I got Glitter 'n Gold Jem. She had gold and pink hair and gold shoes and she came with a tape with songs on it. One side had no singing so you could do your own singing. I still have the tape. It has 3 songs on i: "Jem Goes Gold", "The Mood I'm In", and "Love Is Here." It was sooo cool! I think I might have had a Jem necklace too with pink and purple plastic stylized stars. I wish I could get all the Jem shows on DVD.

Those dolls were like 12" tall so basically Jem and Rio lived together (I had the glitter and gold set too) and her friend Amber lived alone, and sometimes dated my michael jackson doll. Later she kicked him out and made his gold pants into hot shorts for herself. Best dolls ever.

I just remember having a Jem doll, a coloring book, some VHS tapes, and a Halloween costume. My 5th birthday party was Jem themed.

Omg! Jem! I was the biggest Jem freak ever! I loved Aja and her blue hair, I thought Kimber had the prettiest face, I loved Roxy's clothes, I thought Rio was cute. I lived for the cartoon, my own kid soap opera. I was mad when Rio never found out that Jerrica was Jem because I wanted them to get married and have kids with a half pink and half purple hair! I remember playing Shana in a talent show skit at school. I was mad about that, too! I wanted to be Aja but some other girl got to be her! I still have all my Jem dolls! Have them all! I need to get them out and take a trip down memory lane!

Yes, my given name is really Jem -- not short for anything. It came from the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, but when the Jem doll came out I wanted one (I got a lot of jokes about it). It was so popular that even my grandmother who worked at Kmart could only get me the Kimber side-kick doll. My boyfreind had a hard time finding an in-box Jem doll on line for me, but he did it! Now I would like to collect the Hollograms and the Misfits -- anybody selling?

I dressed up as Jem for Halloween last year. There is a very distinct age group that remembers JEM, if you werent born b/w like 1980 and 1985 your too old or too young. Everyone who got that I was JEM worshipped me! hahahhaha

Absolutely loved Jem and the Holograms and still do! I was about 9 when i got into the dolls in 1986 - someone at school had the doll Aja and i had to get it! I then found out about the cartoon on a saturday morning (im in the UK so we got things a bit later than the US!) and then i got Aja for christmas and was hooked! There followed Jem for my birthday, Kimber and Roxy and Stormer a bit later. I also got the videos and books and posters on her, if i could have brought more i would have. I loved the dolls and i loved the fact that they came with instruments and tapes to listen to, how cool were they?!! Seriously i feel sorry for kids today, the 80s were just the best decade for toys IMO! I'm 31 now (32 in 2 weeks) and i have the dvd collection of all the cartoons, have even got a friend into her (she was born in 1982 so too young to remember Jem!) and she loves her. I wish they had kept the doll going, i know why she didnt sell so well as her clothes and shoes didnt fit barbie so she lost out to her in the end which is a shame. Jem still has a place in my heart, will keep the dolls forever! Truly Outrageous!! : )

ebay is a great place to start a Jem doll collection. They are so hard to find at yard sales and thrift shops now. I can't believe they still have 25 year old dolls still in the box on ebay.... I am working on finding clothes for my dolls now. I wonder if they sell MIB items at Jemcon...

My all time favorite dolls. I still have all of mine, even all of the Misfits, I'm only missing Rio. I was so happy when the cartoon came out on DVD, but it was so expensive!! And now they don't make it anymore :(

I did not like the dolls. They looked "cheap". But I LOVE the cartoon. I still watch the box sets. They wont release the last season, though.

The dolls were of the highest quality I've ever seen in a doll line. So detailed, so creative! Never seen so much effort put into a doll line since.

I had Jem & the boyfriend doll & also the car that was actually a real radio once you lifted up the trunk in the back. It was a nice change from just having my Barbie's as the main gal I played with as a kid.

They stood almost a whole head taller than my Barbies. I only had Jem, and the only clothes I remember her fitting into were Ken's.

Are you interested in buying coin operated horses or spring rocking horses??? They are sold on Ebay. Most spring horses are made by Blazon, Wonder, Flexible Flyer, and Radio Flyer. Feel free to buy as many as you like. Good luck!!! :) Ebay account required.

Looking for the lot of jem dolls. Jem, the holograms, rio, misfits, the orphans and any other jem doll. Looking for dolls in original clothing with no cut hair or chewed body parts. Must have all limbs. Doesn’t need to be in a box, preferred out of box honestly. I’m a collector and am willing to pay a fair price. Email me at aim4980@gmail.com
