Description
The Johnson & Johnson name is all about soaps, powders and lotions today, but in the 80s they also put out THE coolest baby toys ever! A see-through rattle with moving parts inside; a dumbbell-shaped toy filled with water and a little red ball that moved thru the water from the squeaky end to the jingle bell end; a freaky vinyl fold-out book with all sorts of strange cartoon and photographic images printed on it. My sister and I used to go to our next-door-neighbor's house in the summer and play with all their J & J toys under the guise of "visiting" their new baby.

My son was born in late 1984. I think I purchased all of the J&J Child Development toys. They were expensive and it was a sacrafice, but I still have those toys todays. I would like to pass them along to any future grandchildren.

These were the best toys ever! I so wish they were still made. My favorite (and the favorite of my three children, born 78, 79, and 81) was a see through plastic bowl (sort of like a goldfish bowl) with three smaller plastic balls that went in it. The smaller balls had colored inserts that spun when you moved them. This was absolutely our kid's favorite. They could play with these for hours. Too big to fit in their mouths, but small enough to fit comfortably in their hands. I'm a grandmother now, and went to purchase them. Imagine my dismay when I learned they were no longer made. It was funny to see the look on the face of the salesclerk as I tried to explain what I was looking for. Please bring these back!

Peggy, the 'Clear Rattle' toy (not the one you were talking about, but another cool one) is up for bid on Ebay right now ... for a cool $30!!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/Johnson-Johnson-PlayPath-Baby-Toy-Rattle_W0QQitemZ260303151951QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260303151951&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

My handicapped son loves that Clear Rattle toy. It is so hard to find toys for him that he likes. I would love to get a couple of the clear rattles. If anyone knows where I could get one, could you let me know? twinoaksmanor@netzero.net

My daughter just had our first granddaughter. Yesterday she asked me what toys she played with when she was a baby. I thought and remembered. I told her the best were the Johnson & Johnson toys. I'm so sad that we didn't keep them. We passed them on to friends when our kids had outgrown them. I wasn't thinking grandchildren at the time! How I wish I had. I guess I have to go on e-bay to try to find our favorites. There was one my husband called the "solar system toy" I'd probably pay an outlandish price for it, or for the rattle or the truck, or I could go on and on. Why did they stop making them?

I LOVED these toys - was in the club and would receive them in the mail. I think we had all of them. I have twin grandaughters now and really wish I had kept them. They were so cool! I wonder why they don't make them anymore.....

These toys are fantastic!! My daughters were born in the 80's and loved each and everyone. I was always so excited when they arrived. I still have them all today and have a new grandbaby boy who will continue to enjoy them!

We really need these toys to come back on the market. There is nothing comparable on the market today. I wish I'd kept our toys as I now have grandbabies that would loooove them!

Does anyone know anyone who has the Johnson & Johnson clear rattle in good condition that they are willing to sell? I have three sisters and my dad bought all of us one of these rattles when we were born. My little sister is having her first child. I thought it would be a cool gift to give her.

Look on Ebay, Kimberly - they are occasionally posted for bids there. Use search terms 'Playpath' and/or 'Clear Rattle' ... beware, however, as they come at a high cost in 2009! Good luck!

I am so sentimental, I practically cried reading all the positive comments surrounding these toys! I cant think of any other toys that were so highly regarded. Of course we gave all of them away to worthy youger advisaries as more baby cousins came along. Never thinking I would not be able to buy them for grandkids. Does anyone know where to get these toys today? I'm thinking about contacting J&J directly..

My mom had gotten these toys for myself and my brother in the 80's. She gave them to my daughter when she was born, and now my son is playing with them and loves the clear rattle.

I Don't know if anyone can help me....my son was born 7 months ago with Down syndrome and his therapist brought forth a bag of Johnson and Johnson toys from the 80s that my son is able to hold in his hands and that promote his fine motor development...but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have any idea? My son was able to hold the rattle so easily. I hate that toys today are so gimicky and not practical like they were then. Thank you for your help!

Scout Ebay, CHRISTINA. You won't always find them but you can count on at least a couple of toys appearing up for bid every month or so. There are two rattles up right now. My daughter was born in 1982. My husband and I received an offer to have Johnson and Johnson toys sent directly to the house. Knowing the reputation of the company we joined. Approximately every 6 weeks a package arrived woth 2 new toys, age appropriate of course, along with suggestions for their use at different ages. These toys GREW with her, and later our son. We are hoping to find somewhere to get some for the next generation.

Sorry, last comment got cut off! http://www.inthe80s.com/toys/images/user-image-1228110088_thumb.jpg Our son absolutely loves this toy at his daycare but he's sadly moving to a new location and the toy can't come along. He'll move every other toy out of the way to get to this rattle. It's amazing! Even similar rattles don't do the trick. I'm not sure what it is, but it's good stuff! Please contact turbo740 at comcast dot net (replace the spaces and 'at' with @ and dot with .) Thank you!

Fun to look at your toys up for bid, Kristy! I remember the yellow dumbbell-shaped water rattle - the baby girl who lived next to us when I was little had one, and I was SO jealous of it!!

I bought all the Johnson & Johnson infant toys for my daughter when she was born in 1984. My other children played with them also. I refused to give them away and put them in the attic in a rubbermaid tub. I went into the attic this past weekend and found that tub of toys, brought them down and my Grand-daughter is in love with them. Her favorite is the Red Rings (great for a teething ring). I'm so glad I kept them all.

I, too, loved these toys. They were the best. I also belonged to the club and loved getting them. My kid's favorite was the pictures on the vinyl pictured above. I could make the two pieces into a box and play peek a boo with them. They loved it! The rattle with the beads was also a favorite, however, it was so big, the babies almost always smacked themselves in the head with it. I wish these were still made!!!

We just gave four of these to our first biological granddaughter; Rhythm Rollers (0 to 36 mos), Balls in a Bowl (6 to 30 mos), Stack & Dump Truck (12 to 48 mos), and Peek-a-Boo Ball (birth to 18 mos), all with the original boxes and books. I was just checking eBay and the Internet in general to see if we should hang on to the boxes and books (the toys are staying!).

My daughter' favorite toy was Backpack Bear. He had a book about potty training in his backpack. She lost it in a Target when she was and we had to buy another since she couldn't sleep. I repaired that bear a few times. When she was in college I found one on ebay and bought it for her. She is 24 now and it is her favorite.

My kids (1988 & 1992) LOVED these toys! I liked the later ones we received as my oldest got older: the peg village, the green house, the truck, the farm puzzle, the soft books with the little bear, and the building set (we called the "H" blocks). My husband threw many of these out a number of years ago in a "too many little pieces of toys" purge without checking with me first. I was just sick about it. I used to see the toys sold under the "Parents' Magazine" toy series at Target, but it sounds like they discontinued them So sad - they were great toys!

I came to this site hoping to find a list with detailed descriptions of these wonderful educational toys and was shocked to see they're no longer made. My son was born in Dec. of '84 and we adopted him the following month. As an elementary school teacher I could see the value of these toys and joined the "club", even though it was quite a sacrifice to pay what, for us, was a high price. But our dear baby was worth it! I believe I purchased the entire collection, but don't see pics of them all here. I still have all of them and my son's daughter, our only grandchild, is now enjoying the same toys her daddy played with. I also have the booklets that came with each toy. They were wonderful manipulatives and great for eye/hand coordination. It's sad that J&J no longer produces them!
