I had a single chain strand of these charms when I was young. They were a present from my Aunt, who lived out in CA. Now, that was very special, because this particular necklace had a lot of charms that could not be found in the small town I lived in. So, everyone I knew asked me where I got them. It was fun.
Dee - September 17, 2008 - Report this comment
Lol,I used to take the charms off and use them for Barbie accessories.

We called them charm necklaces in my 'hood. I had tons of these things. I had a miniature tube of toothpaste on one of mine, I remember. About 10 years ago when I started working in a library, the children's librarian would wear these on a daily basis. YEAH.
Miss Mouse - January 08, 2009 - Report this comment
I completely forgot about these things! I had sunglasses, a bottle, a high heeled shoe, jeez I remember I rode the bus to grade school and some rat kid pulled my necklace into pieces! I think my mom threw it out. This website is memory lane!

I have some! My favorites: frying pan w/eggs, abacus, ring toss guy, bmx helmet w/rainbow rings, sunglasses, baseball bat and conair phone. You can find GREAT pictures of these "junk necklaces" (that's what we called them) on FLICKR by searching plastic charm necklaces. I remember buying mine at a store called McCrory's. It was a 5 & 10. They were .50 each!
Val - April 29, 2009 - Report this comment
omg where are you from DR? Thats where I got mine. It was on staten island McCrory's was the best in the 80's.

Oh, man!! I was all about these when I was a kid...you had to get a new charm every time you saw them. I used to get a lot of mine from swap meets. I miss these, actually...I'd totally wear them now...!
Rosebee - May 15, 2009 - Report this comment
WOW! I LOVED mine...one of my all time fav charms was a turquoise cuckoo clock that had lil dangly pine cones! And OMG I had the orange frying pan w/ the sunny side up egg, lol...a roller skate w/ real wheels...headphones w/ a music note on the side...tooth paste tube...tooth brush...tennnis racket w/ attached white tennies dangling...and my other all time fav was a fuschia/white pair of sunglasses w/ a Playboy bunny on the frame, in between the lens part...ohhh-la-la so very risque. ;) We used to arrange and re-arrange them and make up stories based around the charm. Example: Phone, lipstick, egg in pan...story could be: called my bff, put on my lipstick, and we went to breakfast. XD

Oh Wow! My mom would buy these wholesale to sell at the local flea market and of course, I had my very own necklace from her merchandise! My best friend & I would use them as markers when we played hop-scotch. And of course the most important fashion accessory when we were 7.

I love these! I had a zillion when I was a kid. And I had no friends and the little brats that picked on me all the time, used to say "If you give me that charm, I'll be your friend". I fell for it every time. : ( I have a few charms left from my childhood, adn the rest I bought on Ebay or at thrift stores. I've got about 100 charms total right now, scattered between 3 necklaces. I totally remember the toilet! Mine was white with a purple seat. And the Abaccus was my absolute favorite! I had a pink one when I was a kid. Now I have a blue, pink, purple and violet one. If you search on Flikr, I am the pink playdoh princess. I have pics of some of my charms up there.

Wow, you all were so obsessed with these! I think thats awesome tho. I had one with an ample amount of charms on it. The fad didn't last long in South Jersey. For the time I wore it, I had 2 pink whistle charm with a mousey on it. I was sick n tired of people coming up and blowing on the whistle. So one whistle was for me and the other was for everyone else, but they didn't know there was a difference!

Melissa, if I was one of your peers I would have never tricked you out of your charms like that. Those people had no heart. I felt guilty enough when my real friends used to give me things like Garbage Pail Kid cards. And above all I HATED that "I'll be your friend or best friend if you _ _ _." People would argue and say kids are kids but even as kids, we know right from wrong. I was picked on too. You have my sympathy and I'm glad you were able to get your charms back.

I still have mine! they were so fun to have. my favorite charm is a purple fire extinguisher. I remember my family and I were at a store called Service Merchandise and they were sold in the jewelry section of the store at the display counter. Dad stopped there before going to my elementary open house when I was in the 2nd grade. I wore that necklace with pride!
