Description
Same as concept as today's skip it.... A black ring (that went around your ankle) was connected to a black piece of plastic tubing, and at the end of the tubing was a yellow lemon. And you twisted the tube/lemon around and skipped over it.

Mine had a strawberry instead. Was it name the same? I don't think so.
Jody - September 04, 2007 - Report this comment
I had one of these. It hung on a nail in the garage. I didn't know anybody that was coordinated enough to actually use it the right way. When we did play with it, it usually ended up as a weapon of some sort. It was always getting launched at somebody's head!
nydia - September 14, 2007 - Report this comment
I had one lemon thing like this! I was not bad at it, or...so I thought! I loved playing with it. I actually think this is the type of toy that kids needs nowadays!!!
Tina - October 22, 2007 - Report this comment
My FAVORITE toy...I skipped this thing every day for an entire summer. I'd love to find one!
Michelle - October 29, 2007 - Report this comment
I loved this toy when I was about eight or nine. I can't find any listings whatsoever on ebay for this. It must be pretty rare these days, unfortunately. Why does it seem that they don't make toys like they used to back in the 70s and 80s?
shannon - February 28, 2008 - Report this comment
i love these things. there a great outdoor toy for kids. it gets them out of the house and makes the exercise.
Anne - April 04, 2008 - Report this comment
I absolutely loved my lemon twister. I used it so much that I wore it out and my mom had to get me a new one. However, I had mine in the mid- 70's, not 80's like this website said.
Barb - May 20, 2008 - Report this comment
I had a lemon one too, but in the mid to late '70's. I'm sooo excited today becuase I found new ones (similar, but not the same) at Walgreen's this morning - called the Cosmic Hopper - WOO HOO

WOOOOOOOOOWWWY !!!!!!!!!!YES!!!the internet is the BOMB!i was born in 72 i was telling my hubby about this lemon toy.I couldn't remember the name.I am glad to have found out...i told him i thought it had a counter on the lemon(that would count the jumps you did)I guess i remembered wrong.YOu just have to count them yourself.I totally liked this toy as a kid(not positive cuz I don't have a detailed memory, but i believe mine was most likely from late 70's)
Phil - June 28, 2008 - Report this comment
No, you don't remember wrong!!! I never had one, but remember them well. Maybe there were some that didn't have a counter, but I remember a commercial that showed them with a counter.
clemp - August 24, 2008 - Report this comment
I loved mone, too- I'd love to have another, and would buy one for my 3 kids & their friends, too. They worked perfectly. Other plastic varieties are too hard and hurt my ankles
Susan - August 27, 2008 - Report this comment
This was my favorite toy EVER! I went through about 3 of them. I kept leaving them in the driveway and my Dad would run over them with the truck. Mine was in the 70's too though. Wish I had one now! I'd still play with it!
Flo - November 11, 2008 - Report this comment
That is bizarre my daughter and her friend got something similar this past Halloween at Dairy Queen here in Texas it reminded me of the lemon twister, but my daughters was made cheaply I wish they still sold these because it was alot of fun to jump and yes I was born in 1968 and I remember these very well, these were like the trendy back then, where phones and Ipods have taken that place. I Wish we as parents could have something like this come out instead of $300-up phones or Wii's. My 9 yr old daughter and her friend wanted me to look into finding an old one. This was really good for keeping the kids active and they get very good exercise.

Loved it..loved it...loved it! We used to have contests at school to see who could get the highest. I could do the lemon twist for hours on end. Brings back great memories. One of the best outdoor toys ever!

Oh my, how I remember the Lemon Twister. I loved this toy and would love to find one now. If anyone knows where to find one, please post on this site. I'm sure there will be many appreciative people.
Heidi - May 04, 2009 - Report this comment
I can remember playing with mine for hours. My daughter has something similar now. It's called a skip-it. They are pretty much the same but it's not a lemon on the end, just a round piece.
Kathy - May 07, 2009 - Report this comment
The lemon twister. I am so very much searching for it. I tell my daughters about it quite often. This is one of my all time favorite toys and childhood memories. I want it to be the same for my daughters.
Lisa Luxuria - May 25, 2009 - Report this comment
I had the same thing, except my lemon was actually a strawberry. What's up with the strawberry version? Mine would have been awsome but... it was given to me at Xmas in place of the pink skip-it I'd asked for... Admittedly, doesn't measure up... and it felt like a cop out since I wanted the skip-it for the counter on it and I already had a knock-off version of the lemon-strawberry abomination. Likewise, it had been the only thing I had really wanted that Xmas and had expressed as much. Why Mom & Dad, WHY no pink skip-it?!

i googled "lemon skip toy" and found this link. my god. this toy was a huge fad at my school when i was, guessing, in 5th or 6th grade? so that'd be around '77 or '78. girls AND boys were into it. it was an absurdly fun toy...
Tashina - November 27, 2009 - Report this comment
It was one of my favorite toys of the 70's too. Went through several of them wearing down the plastic.

I can't believe it OMG.. just today my fiancee was asking me why on a survey i put that my favorite childhood toy was the Lemon Twist.. he read that and asked me what is a Lemon Twist and why was it your favorite toy as a child.. I went on and on about it. I loved this toy! wish i could skip with it today.. born in 1970 so played with it in like 1979 or 1980! please tell me where i can buy one today..
Michelle - January 21, 2010 - Report this comment
This was my favorite toy too in the 70s. I wore it out and it was so scuffed on the plastic! My daughter has a similar toy that you can get at Toys R Us, with a cosmic shape on the end, but same principle. She enjoys it!
richie - February 18, 2010 - Report this comment
loved this toy- 5th or 6th grade, so that would have been 78 or 79..right on the edge of the 80's... the ones we had did not have any type of counter on them....also popular at the same time- CHINESE JUMP ROPES!!!
Laura - April 26, 2010 - Report this comment
I loved my Lemon Twist and am trying desperately to find one or two more. It was so much fun and didn't hurt your ankle like these new fangled Skip-Its. That hard plastic just kills your ankle and the lemon twist did NOT.
Shana Avery - May 12, 2010 - Report this comment
Yes, I LOVED mine too!! Really want to find where I could buy one today. I have two daughters who would love one!! I agree with Laura....I bought one that is hard plastic, and it is really hard for them to do and it hurts their ankles....the lemon twister did not do that, and it was great!

Mine was very well used in the 70's and then I found it in the closet at my parent's house a few years ago and my girls have loved it as much as I did. Last week the little piece broke that connects the ankle strap to the longer tube. I would LOVE to find another one (or 3). Awesome toy with lots of fun memories for me and my girls. We even tried some of the newer kind, but they do not compare. I will check Toys R Us...are they the real thing?
Liz - August 21, 2010 - Report this comment
I still have my Lemon Twister! It was one of the toys that I decided to keep forever (I've kept a few) because I loved it so much as a kid. It's scuffed up but still one of my beloved childhood toys.

I loved my lemon twist. It came out in the mid to late 70's. I also used mine so much one summer that the ring broke and my dad tried to repair it by rapping electrical tape around. It didn't quite work the same way after that. It certainly was fun. I was born in 1969, so I was about 7 or 8 when it came out. Awesome toy.
Sherell - February 27, 2011 - Report this comment
This was a great toy, I agree! Where do you guys think I could find one? Ebay and everywhere else I have looked have these ole fake ones with some kind of funny looking light weight plastic circle on it. (Okay, yeah I ordered one, but still!) I do want the original. Anyone who has any info please email me at harmony2four7@aol.com. Thanks :-)

Found some similiar items on ebay. Use search criteria skip toy and you will find some. Not the original lemon twist that sounded like a rattle but some colorful ball ones.

One question - why was it a lemon? My son and I are having a good laugh. I didn't question it then but now it seems weird! Ha ha - but I loved it! It did make some kind of rattle sound!

Everyone! I found the closes thing to the Lemon Twist from the 70's on eBay. The only difference is it comes with a star and it comes in a few colors. It does make a rattling sound. It brings back my childhood memories... I bought one for my daughter, she loved it!

First of all I would like to say that this is one of the coolest Sites I've found to this day. Love reading all the comments about the Lemon Twister which was one of me and my sisters favorite toys coming up in the 70s as well. I'll never ever forget that evening we first got ours and the fun we had playing with them. I'm not completely sure but I believe the Lemon had rocks on the inside to make that rattling sound. Being a Treasure Hunter I from time to time run across things like these like the Metal Jacks that I came across not that long ago with the girl and boy on the package. Like many here I too would like to get my hands on the original but all I been able to find this far is what use to be the Lemon to this great childhood masterpiece. Can't forget about all those other toys we enjoyed such as the easy bake oven for the girls, Banana Bikes, Choppers, Green Machines. Kids today just don't know the treats they missed out on because back during our time was where it will always be at hands down. I can't forget another one of my favorite childhood toys, That Dino I had coming up that I use to ride off the porch in the 70s....lol.
