Lunch boxes were great. If I remember correctly, they even had a matching thermos. My favorite was my Star Wars lunch box.
StormDragon - May 28, 2007 - Report this comment
Lunch boxes have been around since long before I was born- in the 80's everyone had one, and they were plastic. I remember having a Super Mario Brothers lunch box in elementary school.

My favourite lunchbox was a 'My Little Pony' pink lunchbox. It was lovely and colourful and i have been searching on ebay for it. I started school in October 1987, so it would have been around in the late 80's. Does anyone remember the teddy bear shaped lunchboxes? They were red or yellow and most children at my school had one.

I had a Miss Piggy plastic one, it was bright pink and she was on the front I think on a motorcycle. I also had a metal one but can't remember what it was. Gonna drive me nuts...

I had a metal Muppets lunch box. We used to slide down this little blacktop hill in our playground area while sitting on our lunchboxes. Scraped up the metal pretty bad but boy was it fun!

I got this one lunchbox that had a built-in radio and came with headphones. I remember the first time I brought it to school, put my headphones on, and turned on the radio, the whole time thinking how cool I was. About a week later my milk leaked and killed the radio, not that it was very good anyway. But for a week there I was king of second grade. Still am.

I had a Clash of the Titans lunch box back in '82-83! God thoughs were the good days. Metal lunchboxes, Tonka trucks. SIGH! now everythink is plastic and falls apart, I feel bad for children these days.

Over the years I had an Annie lunchbox, a Care Bears lunchbox, an ALF lunchbox, and a Jem lunchbox. The Annie one was real metal, but the others were plastic, and I used to lose the Theormas every year. I just found a really cool vintage metal Barbie lunchbox at a thrift store for $1.99, and I take my lunch to work in it every day, and I'm almost 28!!!

I had a McDonald's themed metal lunch box! I wish I would've kept it because it probably would've been worth something today!

Wow... brings back memories. I originally had a SuperMario lunchbox with the coolest thermas... you know, the one with the black bullets. Then after moving to another house, I lost it and then got, get this!, a TeenageMutantNinja turtle lunchbox... and I still have it, although the thermas is long gone.

I'm 38 now so I started with a metal Scooby-Doo box. My favorite part of starting school was picking a new lunch box each year. My older cousin had SWAT. Did anybody ever have a Wags-n-Whiskers metal box? I always thought I was pretty "original" with that one!

In the first grade I had a bright orange plastic lunchbox and matching thermos with the New Kids on the Block on them! Wish I still had that dumb thing, maybe it would sell.
SZA - July 18, 2008 - Report this comment
My sister had a metal Pac-Man one that looked like the game board. I had a red 'Ghostbusters' model in 1985, then a red 'Froot Loops' in 1986 with Toucan Sam on it. (??? - I don't know what the appeal was THERE.) You could never get the smell of old milk and SpaghettiOs completely out of the thing. When I was growing up, it was not cool to carry a lunchbox in any grade higher than 2nd.
SZA - July 18, 2008 - Report this comment
(Oh, and they switched from plastic to metal lunchboxes after kids started using the metal ones on each other as weapons!!!)

In 1st grade I had a metal one w/ Yoda on it. A boy in my grade wouldn't stop picking on me so I nailed him in the head w/ it & dented it. I got in trouble, but I was more upset for ruining my lunchbox! My mom switched to plastic after that. I think I got a yellow Garfield one as replacement.

I had a gremlins metal lunchbox before I even went to school, it used to scare me. Someone must have given it to me for a gift because I don't ever remember using it. I know I had one every year from Kg-2nd (by 3rd grade lunch boxes were "uncool"), but the only one I remember is Tiny Toons, which was very early 90's, not 80's, sorry! I used to like to pack my own lunch. My mom warned me never to put milk in the thermos, but didn't give me a reason, so one day I packed milk, thinking I knew better, and later that day threw up from drinking the milk that had not been properly refrigerated! I wish they still made these, even to have the option! I remember being so fascinated that the top of the thermos turned into a cup! No one has mentioned that yet and that was the best part of the lunchbox, in my opinion. One last memory was this girl I used to sit by always had soup in her thermos & I always thought that was bizarre.

I had a plastic yellow California Raisins one, a red Super Mario Bros. one, and a red Chip'n Dale Rescue Rangers one in elementary school. Now 20 years later, when I bring lunch to work, I use my nintendo DS starter kit. It is like a metal lunchbox and it's pink with Princess Peach on it.

I had a plastic red Gremlins lunch box with matching thermos that I got for my first day of school along with a pink Gremlins back pack. I don't ever recall liking Gremlins that much but that's what happens when you're too young to pick your own stuff. LOL. The following year I insisted on a SheRa one though.

in 4th grade i had a metal clash of the titans lunch box. i liked it for Bubo the Owl, they should have just got rid of the pix of Harry Hamlin and the Kraken and just made it a Bubo lunch box. anyway that kid Dougy up the street liked me but had trouble expressing himself so at the bus stop he stole my lunch box. he found a big rock in the road and beat on the lunch box until the lid dented in half and wouldn't close anymore. (catholic elementary school. say no more.) later his mom made him give me money from his Darth Vader talkling head bank to pay for the lunch box. saw today that old lunch box is offered for $100 and more on ebay.

I still have the My Little Pony lunchbox in the pictures up top, (in fact think that picture is from the site I bought it from) the decal was faded so I replaced it (photoshop and some sticker printer paper 5 minute job) but other than that its still in excellent condition, I love it, and use it often

I had a Star Wars metal lunch box & my twin brother had the same one. You had to line your boxes up by the cafe & when you went to lunch you would pick it up. Even with my name on it I always managed to come home with someone else's box!!!

I remember getting a new lunchbox every year as a little kid. I had She-Ra and I had a Barbie one and a Rainbow Brite one. I remember my Mom would sometimes give me chicken noodle soup in the thermos and it was always room temp. by the time I got to eat it. The lunchbox, like tupperware, started to get that funky, plastic mixed with food smell. And if you ate spaghetti-o's out of the thermos it was permanently stained red. And yes, I remember how everyone's Mom would wite the kid's name in black sharpie pen at the top of the lunch box. Awwwwwwwwww I miss those days.
SZA - July 27, 2010 - Report this comment
So true, Maura - 80s babies will never forget that "funky" lunchbox smell. Especially those of us whose mothers packed SpaghettiOs (which in my case was often!). :)
Andrea - August 23, 2010 - Report this comment
They did have a funny smell hahaha, I remember that. My first one was a metal Miss Piggy lunchbox, she was on a motorcycle. Then I remember having a NKOTB one too, lol.

I was looking up the Star Wars, ewok, lunch boxes a few days ago on ebay. I still have two at my mothers house. In the 80's, lunch boxes were like a status symbol in school. The metal ones were more prized.

No one else has the red plastic care bears lunch box? I remember some kids' mom's would write them notes about how much they loved them and would put them in their lunch boxes and then they would try and hide them from everyone at the table. Im glad my mom never did that!
Cassandra - December 16, 2013 - Report this comment
