Description
Puppy Surprise: "Puppy surprise, puppy surprise, how many inside, 3, 4, or 5?" A pregnant Mommy dog with surprise puppies inside a velcro-enclosed stomach. It was really cool if you got 5 puppies inside, but rare.

Apparently these were made by Playskool. You could look at the inside of the dog's ears to see if it was a girl (pink) or boy (blue.) The mom and puppies all had the same markings. There was also Kitty Surprise

These were originally made by Hasbro, NOT Playskool, which released it's own line of Puppy Surprise in 2005. In addition to Puppy and Kitty Surprise, there was also Pony and Panda Surprise.

I remember having one... Although perhaps a much later one because it looked nothing like the example here... however she had 5 puppies.

I loved puppy suprise. She looked different from the pic though. You opened her velcrow tummy and puppies came out. I actually had one that had 5 puppies! I have later learned that it was very uncommon to haev 5. guess I was lucky. I dont have the dog anymore but I still have one of the puppies...in my junk drawer. I just cant get rid of it
Katie - October 07, 2007 - Report this comment
I got the puppy surprise but mine only had three puppies. I remember some of their faces were made to look asleep and others were awake. I think I got one puppy that was asleep. My friend had all of the animal surprise versions! She was spoiled, haha. Later they made accessories to go with the puppies like baseball uniforms or something. The picture at the top is the new version from 2006 seeing as its really ugly and resembles a brat doll...they did the same thing with Littlest Pet Shop.

I had the orange Bunny Suprise. She ended up having 5 baby bunnies. They came with ribbon around thier neck in blue or pink to specify the gender. I also had the back and white Puppy Suprise. She ended up having 3 puppies which looked exactly alike; 2 boys and 1 girl. I'm suprised I even remember this! =]

I still have my Puppy Surprise from when I was 6 (I'm currently 22). It's not exactly in the best of shape, though. Mine, a cream colored one with white ears and tail, came with four puppies, three of which are females. One of them looks just like the mother, one's almost an inverted version, and the other two are black and white. The more recent one kinda disturbs me, and the original was disturbing enough, in theory. Lol.

Why do so many people find pregnant toys disturbing? It's part of LIFE people!! Get over it. What? Did you grow up in a bubble of some sort where babies were delivered by storks?? Come on!

Puppy Surprise was cute back in the 80s, but the ones sold today aren't I used to have one back in the 80s.

This is the most fantastic series of comments I've found in a long time. I especially like Amber's flip out. Keep it up ladies. Communication is key. Also, did anyone else like to put other animals inside mommy and have her birth those too?

April is only partially correct. There were 5 varieties. Puppy Surprise (I had one), Kitty Surprise, Bunny Surprise, Pony Surprise, and Cub Surprise. They were all by Hasbro. I have a friend who has one of each, except for the cub. ^_^

YAY to the person who posted the picture of the original! I had one that was pinkish-lavender & she had 4 puppies. Remember that scene in 101 Dalmations (the first Disney cartoon movie, not the live action movie or the cartoon TV show) when Perdita has her puppies? And one dies but Roger rubs it & brings it back to life? I used to imitate that scene with these puppies...they were just the right size lol.

I loved puppy surprise when I was little. I remember I got one and the mom didn't have 5 puppies, so I begged for another puppy surprise. And another after that one. I had three different moms and I never got 5 puppies, I was so disappointed! But it was fun naming the puppies!

I had all of them. I had a bunny with 3 babies, a horse with 3, a cub with 3, a kitten with 3 and 2 dogs, one with 3 and the other with 5! The one dog had 2 runt puppies. Did you know however, that if you only got 3, you could send away and they would send you a 4th one. It never looked like the rest of them though. I had a lot of those dress up and baby ones that came separate too. I know, I was really spoiled.

Just wanted to provide some basic facts about Puppy Surprise which may surprise you (that CAN NOT be disputed by HASBRO): I am an inventor and the inventor of the product this site discusses. In 1990, when I was 24 years old, I worked for the Strategic Planning, Research and Institutional Development Dept. at Central State University. Because my (then) husband and I didn't have children, I, yearning to mother, worked at our Salem Mall's Doctor X Pet Center, selling puppy's. At work one evening, I was gathering statistics on the # of women who'd had births vs. the # of women in undergraduate programs (that info. provided by HEGIS reports). I was doodling, looking forward to my shift cuddling pups at the pet store that night, while also thinking about the project there at work. I drew out a dog and put puppies inside of it. Because I already had three inventions, I began the full design, like I had done in the past. A couple of weeks later, I saw a television commercial on advertising a company's ability to validate and try to market one's invention. The company was TLCI (Technology Licensing Consultants Inc.) located in Pittsburg, PA. I contacted them, they forwarded me several forms, along with a multiply-signed nondisclosure agreement form. (This made me feel safe about submitting my invention.) I drew out the diagrams of the product (I'd called Pedigree Pups 'n Mommy--since I worked with pedigree pups at night) on the drafting paper they included within their packet. On one of their forms, they asked several questions about how I came up with the idea, who the product would attract, and what did I see down the line. To this question, I told them, I would introduce pedigree cats, horses, birds, reptiles, etc. After sending the materials in (maintaining a copy for myself, of course), I heard back from them about two weeks later. They telephoned my office, by (then) boss (Dr. Barbara Fleming, now a great mystery book author) took the message. She told me they were interested in my product, but advised me not to take those companies too seriously because they said that to everybody who submitted their ideas. A few days following that conversation, I received another package in the mail from TLCI. This time, however, it was a chart of COSTS for various levels of work, etc., and indicating that there were no guarantees that my product would ever make it to market. The first amount I was supposed to remit was $2,500. There was no way I could, nor would I pay this company that amount. I wrote them a letter stating that I would require time to get investors together (but I was really going to get an attorney!) Days after sending them my letter, I received the final package from TLCI, it was the material I'd sent to TLCO, together with a thank you note, saying that none of the material I submitted was copied nor would be used. Eleven months later, as I was writing out bills in my bedroom, I heard a commercial on the television in my living, where my beagles (brother and sister--then pups) were watching cartoons: "Look, Puppy Surprise is Having Puppies! ... How many? That's the surprise! ..." I dropped my pin, dashed into my living room and there it was! My Pedigree Pups 'n Mommy dummied down to a lovable little toy: Puppy Surprise. My heart sank as my tears fell. After months of writing Oprah and Haraldo, I finally got an attorney, Kelvin Boddie of Boddie Law (Dayton, OH). We learned that TLCI had conveniently filed bankruptcy, which locked their records up in court in Pittsburg, so we travelled to Pittsburg. My lawyer was unable to sway their courts to let us have the names of those individuals behind the company, so we next went to Hasbro, who was marketing and distributing the toy. After much correspondence back and forth, they provided the name of the person they purchased the toy from. Investigators my attorney hired determined that the name and (New York) address were alias to an unknown source who had gotten away with theft of my product. I couple years ago, I learned that TLCI lost a class-action lawsuit that was filed against them for the theft of several other people's inventions, and for the countless dollars they'd stollen from unsuspecting individuals looking for assistance, as I had been. I vaguely recall receiving a notice in the mail several years ago, informing me that my name was part of a class-action lawsuit, but I had no idea who it was from. I am now trying to locate that document, those attorneys or whatever information I can, so that I can receive my fair and just recompense. Thanks for letting me share these facts with you. (If anyone out there knows someone who can assist in this matter, please have them contact me.)

So....My favorite stuffed animal growing up was a stuffed dog, which (seemingly, like puppy surprise, had puppies in a velcro puch in it's stomach). I got it for christmas when I was maybe 6 or 7 (i was born in 1988, if that gives any sort of reference). It seems to be very reminiscent of these puppy surprise stuffed animals, but I cannot seem to find which one I actually have, and it is driving me CRAZY. It doesnt have a hard, plastic face, instead, it is all soft and has a pink bow on its head with white polka-dots. it had two puppies inside (which were attached by strings when taken out, and also had 'voice boxes' inside that would activate and bark when squeezed). If anyone has ANY idea what this could be, or where I could look them up, I would be forever grateful. Thanks!
DoubleDees - December 29, 2014 - Report this comment
@Ryan I had the same exact toy you described but mine was a kitty! I remember the strings (white, I think?) and two kittens were brown but not of a plush material. Kittens meowed when squeezed. Oh, how I loved that toy and my puppy surprise! I had the black and white one with 4 puppies! Alas I cannot for the life of me remember what that other toy was called nor after 2 hrs of searching online can I find out. Hopefully somebody else may know? Best of luck to you and thank you for that unexpected trip down memory lane :)

Puppy Surprise came out again in 2014. I recently adopted a Puppy Surprise, and the Mommy dog is rainbow of colors, as is her puppies. There were two Puppy Surprises left at this Walmart. I took her home with me, unpackaged her from her packaging, threw ALL of the packaging out in the garbage, and opened up the Velcro pouch on her belly. She comes with not three, not four, but FIVE - YES, FIVE - I will repeat that - FIVE - puppies. Which includes a boy puppy, a sleeping puppy, AND a Puppy much smaller than the other 4. How excited I was!!!!!!! The Mommy's face is so beautiful, and she has purple ears and a purple tail. Her original name was Cherry, but I renamed her Purple Showers.
