Description
This little brown dog had terrycloth ears, and a plastic red tag on his neck. When you pulled on it, a string would come out, and his head would shake. You would then be "covered" with suds. You could only use it a couple times, because he got so mildewed, when he shook, little black things came out of every orifice of the rub-a-dub doggie.

I got one of these one Christmas in the early 80's. Mine never Mildewed, but I don't think I used him in the tub all that often

You can find him on Ebay. There's several on there if you're looking for one.
Heather - May 31, 2007 - Report this comment
I got one at the local flea market recently. All you could do was turn his head using the red handle like thing in the back of his collar. I vaguely remember having one as a child. I didn't see any at all on eBay though... I guess it depends on when you look.

How scary is it that I can still sing the commerical jingle for this toy in its entirety? "Rub a dub doggy, soft little doggy, likes to take a bath with you. Taking a bath can be so much fun cause two in the bathtub is more fun than o-o-o-n-e!" Sad.
Akilah - September 14, 2007 - Report this comment
I had a brown one!!! I loved this thing and always took baths with it until my mother threw it out Years later...I wish I still had mine to give to my kids...boy they don't make toys like they used to!

I remember wanting one of these SOO bad, but no one ever bought me one. If I had one, it probably would have mildewed as much time as I liked to take baths! lol

OMG, upon seeing this picture, I definitely had one, but mine was blue, I think.
Katie - November 28, 2007 - Report this comment
I had the little ones, a darker one and a lighter one, and they had a house/town thing that suction-cupped to the shower wall. Anybody know what I'm talking about? It was awesome!

This doggy used to come with a sponge bone, and was made by the Ideal Toy Company. Ideal Toy Company was founded as Ideal Novelty and Toy Company in New York in 1907 by Morris and Rose Michtom after they had invented the Teddy bear in 1903. The company changed its name to Ideal Toy Company in 1938. In 1982, the company was sold to CBS Toy Company, which itself closed down. Certain brands and toys have been continued through other companies. I found the old commercial for this toy on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58-LXdEkLtY

Yah chelle, I remember the little ones. I saw it at the toy store once. I asked for it and my mom said no. When we went back later they were gone. She STILL feels bad!! Wasn't it a carwash? If I ever found it, I would totally buy it!

I still have my rub-a-dub doggie! I'd forgotten all about him. He's packed away in the basement in the human-sized toy box, nicknamed 'the coffin' that my dad built for me and my sister. For our toys that is! :) Mine was tan with dark brown ears.
Miranda - September 24, 2008 - Report this comment
I found the playset that Katie described in her comment in my storage shed today. The roof collapsed and water had damaged the box. Still all the pieces are mint and the 2 doggies in the box are in great shape. I'm so excited because I loved my doggy.

I just thought of this toy the other day, and I remembered how much I LOVED it! I don't ever remember it getting moldy or mildewy, I just remember loving making his ears flap around, and getting splashed with the water. I even took him to bed with me most nights. He was definately one of my favorites, and I would love to find one for my own daughter.

I had one and I loved it so much! The body got logged with water and I ended up throwing it away years ago. But I have a question does anyone have a picture of or remember owning one with a pink body and purple ears?

I do not remember my dog that way maybe someone can help me maybe mine was something different. I had a tan dog plastic but on the bottom he had sponge rollers he was hollow so you put a bar of soap inside him and the rollers would get soapy when you rolled him across your legs.I loved to use this toy I wish I could find one for my daughters.
Suzanne - December 24, 2008 - Report this comment
I have two small ones. One is white with blue cloth ears and there is also a blue one with purple cloth ears (and pink plastic bows). The bottom of each one reads C 1985 VMIG - Made in Thailand. They look like they are just figurines, not head-shaking like the larger toy.
Suzanne - December 24, 2008 - Report this comment
Apparently VMIG stands for "View-Master Ideal Group."

I wanted one of these SO BAD and we couldn't afford it. :( After they were gone and off the market (and I was just a little too old for it) my Granny found one at a yardsale for 50 cents and got it for me! I love it to this day, it sits on my tub! Mine never mildewed either. In fact the head and body are sealed (if you squeeze them no air comes out) so no water gets in. You're right they just don't make toys like this anymore!
Holly - February 03, 2009 - Report this comment
I want one SO BAD NOW and can't afford it! I had one when we were little. We always shampood up his ears. I am totally opposite my mom about getting rid of stuff. If I had one now you'd have to pay $1,000 for it!!!

Angela mentions a dog with rollers a few posts above mine. I have been searching for the one with rollers for several years, and my older brother swears it was made by Avon. Not only were there dogs, but also cars, trucks, and other animals. So far, I've had no luck finding anything out about them or if Avon or another company made them.

I actually had both colors pictured. I got the brown one for Christmas. The white one was obtained years later. I was at a friend's house and he had it. I liked the dog, so he gave him to me. I had a similar experience with a Snoopy figure. Rub A Dub Doggy was awesome!

I LOVE this little dog. He spent the better part of my childhood perched on the edge of the tub, ready for a bath. I loooved soaping up his ears and then rinsing them until no more foam ran off them when I squeezed them. At the age of 10, his wet ears reminded me of hanburger patties and I would pretend that they really were. So I'm sure I've tasted Rub's ears on several occasions too. I'm now 32 years old and I still have him! How could I just throw good ol' Rub away? No, he's still here, hanging out with my Pound-- my Pound Puppy-- and a couple Cabbage Patch Kids.

I just saw this in a toy magazine! My daughter is 32, and I remember her just HAVING to have one for christmas. she loved it. I remember the jingle on the TV, but honestly, only remember the brown dog available.
WereDog - October 19, 2009 - Report this comment
If I'm not mistaken when they first came out all that was available was the brown one. The white one came later. This is one of those toys I had that I'd want back the most.I recently started a plastic dog collection. I've found I prefer plastic/vinyl dogs over the plush dogs I was collecting before. Also my first favorte toy was a plastic/vinyl snoopy. And I've stopped collecting bears period. They couldn't hold my interest. I wasn't aware there were smaller Rub A Dub Doggies. I want those too. Now if I could just get over my Ebay jitters.

By the way, he's brown, and has a lever on the back of his red collar which moves his head. No pull cord; no problem with mildew.

I am 30 years old, and I still have mine. He's the original brown one from 1984. I could never part with him. He was always my favorite toy,a Christmas gift. I even took him to NYC as a little girl when I went to visit my dad. I lost the sponge bone to my border collie, though. She though it was a chew toy, and ended up tearing it apart. I asked my mom to glue it back together. Okay, I was only 4 years old, and didn't know better. She said she'd try, so I wouldn't get upset, but ended up having to throw it away. She also said she'd fix my Sheera Princess of Power doll/action figure when my older sister gave her a hair cut. At least I still have my rub-a-dog-doggie, minus the bone, and I still have Sheera too, she just has a bob now (both safe in storage). That's how my mom "fixed her"(at least she tried to make things better). Well, the person that said they don't make toys like they used to is right. It's shocking to see the terrible hard plastic they use to make toys like My Little Pony's now. I love the old vinyl ones like my sister's and I had. Classics.
Anne - October 22, 2010 - Report this comment
Re: Previous comment I think it was 1985 that he first came out, not 1984. I have had many heart surgeries since the age of 3, so some of my memories are blocked, because of the trauma. I apologize if I got the year wrong. It's great to have parents and siblings to remind you of the good memories you've forgotten, though.
Anne - October 22, 2010 - Report this comment
It might have been 1984 after all. I just saw two original brown ones on ebay that are supposed to be stamped with the year 1982. One is at $3.99, the other is at $19.99, in case someone out there is looking for one to buy.

I had an original brown one and loved it so much, my mom actually made me a Rub-a-Dub-Doggie Halloween costume when I was in kindergarten. I think she used the elephant pattern and just omitted the trunk :)

I can remember buying this at Toys r us in Boardman, Ohio. I was born in 1982, but remember sitting in the cart picking it out. My mom threw it away eventually because of mildew. Brings back memories, lol.

I had one of these, it had a handle on the back of the neck for turning the dog's head and a (long disintegrated) bone-shaped sponge. He has been in our car boot sale box for years and still not found a new home :(

I have the brown one with a handle at the back of the red collar that you move side to side. I got this when I was little and I remember it coming with a red sponge in the shape of a bone. I still have the dog but the sponge is long gone.

Just this week I got my daughter's rub a dub doggie out of the loft (she will be 32 this year) and after a good wash he was dutifully delivered to my grandson - who loves him already!

Oh my gracious!!! I've finally found her!! I had Princess, the sort of light lavenderish or orchid-pink puppy. I remembered her thick green collar with the handle on the back to turn her head, the soft ears, the sparkly eyes and adorable face, the pose and everything...I immediately recognized her and her name when I saw her. *sigh* Oh, how I miss this. One of my favorite bath toys. I was born in 87, and I think my mom and grandma bought it for me because I've always been a humongous dog fanatic. Now that I see others...Buffy, Fluffy, Rosie, the Shampoodles, a blue one...gosh, I wish I could have those as well!! 8'D
Michelle - September 11, 2013 - Report this comment
Unfortunately...it seems they're very rare and expensive now. :'( Also, I don't think mine ever mildewed. I had her for quite some time, but eventually she became one of the loads of beloved toys my mom gave away on me. I do recall her being kept on the bathroom floor near the tub, and actually used. I guess we dried her really well or something. ^u^
