Description
They would have a shell that could only be opened by a key that came with it (or by a snooping brother). There was a few different ones, the one I had was purple and and had a sleepy look to him. I loved hiding my bothers micro machines in it!

I'm wondering if you meant Keypers. If you look up Keypers, you'll see that they are animals which open with key. There's a purple turtle

They are called keypers not keepers. There was a swan whos wings opened and a pony, and some really strange little creatures that looked like brains... i beleive they were German and extremely groovy :)

I had a purple snail with glasses that wore a little night-cap. I really liked this toy. I think it was very inventive since it served two purposes. You could play with the snail or his little friend (mine had glasses like the snail) or lock things inside the animal's shell.

Finally, I have closure!! When I was a little girl, I had Secret Keyper (a little purple creature of some sort) -- and I lost it (my secret treasures still inside! haha). Anyway, I'm 28 and I still think about this silly toy, plagued by the fact that I didn't remember what it was called and no one ever knew what I was talking about. Thank you inthe80s.com! :)

Yup I loved these, I had a purple snail and I used to keep all my little treasures in it and carry it around the house.

I had the red/pink snail, but it was the little one that you squeezed to open and didnt take a key. My friend and I filled the thing up with lightning bugs one night. My dad had to take it outside and hose it out.

I had the orange one (same as the pic at the top) my older sister dropped it when I said she couldnt play with it and one side broke off, I was devistated an cryed for hours(she said it was an accident I still dont think it was to this day, lol). I found a similar kind of updated version of this toy about 2 years ago, it was nowere as nice as the one I had as a child but my young daughter thought it was wonderful, she still has it somewere in her playroom, think I will go look for it, lol

They're actually called "Keypers". You might be able to find more information about them that way. @Ellie- there's some listed on ebay :)
