Shani and her friends were introduced in 1991 by mattel makers of Barbie at that time Mattel was getting complainants from people saying the black Barbie weren't ethically correct so Barbie designer Kitty Black Perkins designed a line of African American Barbie size dolls that were shaped like black women and also their had skin tones from light to medium and dark and Shani and her friends Asha and Nichelle came with African Inspired outfits and also they were heavily advertised in Ebony & Jet magazines and also on Soul Train
