These were little fuzzy animal families, mom dad brother sister baby (every animal you could imagine)they were dressed in tiny clothes, they had there own house and furniture, pots and pans everything a little fuzzy toy animal would need. These toys are available in modern form (same molds, same accessories, but expanded upon) in toy stores (usually non-chain stores)as "Calico Critters".

These were actually called Sylvanian Families. These were very similar, but earlier than the characters from the TV show Maple Town, that aired on Nickelodeon in the late 80's early 90's. These toys are available in modern form (same molds, same accessories, but expanded upon) in toystores (usually non-chain stores)as "Calico Critters".

I so remember these as the Sylvanian family as a child. If you are looking to buy them, you can find them at Target under the Calico Critters.

I had almost the whole Maple town population. No one seems to remember these, as is evident from lack of comments. These were my all time favorite toys.

I had the large house, and about 30 different familes, beavers, rabbits, hedgehogs etc. I also had lots of furniture, cant remember where they went, gutted as my god-daughter wants to start collecting them.

Today is one of those days I am thankful I didn't throw or give these toys away. I still have the house, the tree house, each room's furniture, and the bear and fox family. Ahh, memories. Dude, Sylvnian was sooo much better than Mapple Town! ;)

I had the beaver, bear and bunny families. My mom used to buy them for me at the local Ace Hardware. I recently came across the bunny family at a local antique store. I think they were asking around $50 for the set still in the box. That made me feel so old LOL

There was a Sylvanian Families TV show that I recently found the tape for because I made my parents video tape every episode. There was a random cartoon child in each episode that got to travel to Sylvanian land to deal with their problems. And Packrat was so scary when I was little. I still have all of the families and all of the houses and the tree house. I loved them!
itsjustme - June 24, 2008 - Report this comment
I had most of these. and the house with all the furniture. I even had a talking crystal babblebrook that came with a tape that told a story and her mouth moved along with it. it would do it when you talked too...she rocked

I've wanted to collect these since I was a kid! But my parents always gave me the impression that they were too expensive. The Calico Critters aren't that bad these days. Were they expensive back then?
Moby - August 24, 2008 - Report this comment
Never owned them, but they do constitute to a large part of my tv advert memories from the 80's.

I've just found my old family of bears and rabbits. I still have the tree house and some furniture. I think they were expensive to buy back then, because my parents couldn't afford them either and I had to really beg to get a new critter. I never saw the houses or shops for sale here in Oz, only the tree house. I loved these so much that I won't part with them now!

A friend of mine and her sister had a big house each, full of little pots and pans and books and rolling pin and baby bottle, and such cute stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!I begged my mum but they were both rare and incredibly expensive in Australia. When my auntie got remarried, her stepdaughter had the massivest collection I had ever seen.

Catherine - December 12, 2008 - Report this comment
Didn't they have bigger ones that took batteries that would move their mouths to a song or to you talking?

I have lots and lots of these. But I first started my huge collection with just the Bramble Cottage, Village Bakery, The Maces (mouse family), and Heather Thistlethorn about seven years ago, they were selling them in Target for the first time, I was so excited when I saw them in the catalogue because I had heard about these before. They only sold the cottage, the bakery and a few families. A year later me and my mum were in the same Target and I was looking at the Barbies suddenly a sylvanian family pops out of the barbie boxes, I had never seen it before. It was a raccoon family, but no raccoon family I had seen in Sylvanian Families before. I remember them distinctly, they were light brown with grey blotches around there eyes and my mum asked me if I wanted it. I already had a barbie ready to buy and my mum said I could have one or the other stupid me chose the barbie and I hid the raccoons behind lots of boxes the next week I checked and they were gone. I should have lay-byed them since the same family is very, very rare and expensive now. If anyone finds anything similar please tell me via this commenting ring, thanks for reading my long, hopfuly not boring story :) Have a Happy New Year.

OMG! I've been looking for Sylvanian families for years. My sister and I had the bunny and bear families, and loved them so much! We always thought we were the only kids who knew what they were! Good to know there were other kids who played with them, too. :)

When I came across this page I screeched with joy! I have thought about these toys over the years and why i didn't think to just try and google "90s toy with little animals" before is beyond me... I have such fond memories of these little critters. I could play with them for HOURS on end, I almost forgot about the tree house until I saw one of the comments above... *SIGH* to be young again, I would still play with these for hours...

I recently sold my 60 (yep 60!) odd houses, shops schools, etc, etc, all fully furnished and stocked with families to run each household or business to the Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum in the South Island of New Zealand. After checking our pictures of the museum displays form the Sylvanian Village near Tokyo I think mine are 5 times better!!! So if you are ever down under and want to reminisce I am claiming my collection to be the best on publice display in the world!!!

I happen to find this site searching for these bunnies on the internet. Believe it or not I still have 2 Sylvanian boy talking bunnies that came with a cassette tape. They are the larger version that take batteries and their mouths moves when they tell a story (via the cassette tape) or when you talk to them. I am showing them to my children as we speak. They found them hidden in my closet and I went into a panic as these were my all time favorite toys. I only let my children look, but not touch as they still work great and look as good as new. OMG! They are so cute!

I just found mine "Babblebrook" grey rabbit family.I also have their red roof cottage house and living room set. My daughter spotted the newer Calico Critters at a teaching store and I had to drag her out of the store. Once home I surprised her with mine. I remember the names of the boy and girl bunny= Bubba and Breezy Babblebrook.I was thinking the grandma Bunny with pink lace shawl was Crystal Babblebrook. The new Calico Critters are nearly identical to the old Sylvanian Families. Glad to see some quality toys stayed the same 20+ yrs.later.

I still have the original large Sylvanian Family Rabbit that talks. It is the one in the little farmer suit where you take the backside out and put two batteries in. It still works perfectly, the ears still wiggle and his mouth still moves when turned on. He is in great condition for his age and I have been searching for someone who would know his value because I know he is one of the rarest to come by in this collection and I am debating on selling. If anyone knows a dealer who might have information, please let me know.

I loved Sylvanian Families when they first came out, but I was a teenager & too old to have had any of my own at that stage. But, I used to babysit 2 different families where the girls had huge Sylvanian Families sets - one had the car, several houses, a bakery & school & loads of furniture & accessories. I have to admit that I would carry on playing with these long after the kids had gone to bed, hoping that the parents wouldn't catch me on their return! It was my embarrassing little secret! But now I have fully regressed back to my childhood and have a small house, a rabbit family and some of the furniture, and I really enjoy setting up the rooms and dressing up the rabbits without shame. There is a Sylvanian Families Store in London, which exclusively sells all current & rare new Sylvanian Families - I SO want to go there! They have a comprehensive website and you can order from it, might be worth looking up as they might have the talking figurines & cassettes as well, or know of a dealer. Some stores have started selling the houses, cars, furniture and families again, usually cheaper than eBay. One store has larger doll size figurines, but they don't talk. It might be worth checking the Japanese sellers as they seem to have different stock to those in the Uk and Australia. Good luck in your search!

That's really cool, but I don't live in the UK :( I really want one, or at least to see a picture. They are not modern, they come from the 80s when Teddy Ruxpin and the other talking toys were popular.

GUESS WHAT, I FOUND ONE!! On eBay with her cassette and MIB!! If you have enough money, please bid on her, since I can't (Too much money). I'd love to see her go to a good home :)

Can someone please help me on this? When I was little I had a blue cassette tape and all I remember about it was the song "Sylvanian family, they're so cute and tiny you will love them wait and see" The story was about someone stealing a bumbleberry pie I think? If anyone has this I would love a copy of it for my daughter. It would mean a lot to me since we lost ours in a house fire over 15 years ago.

I missed out on these in the 80s. I recently acquired two of the newer Calico Critters dog families. The yellow labs and the dalmations. They're pretty cool. Were there dog ones in the 80s too or is that a new thing? These little guys are well made but kind of expensive. $20 for a family of small dogs. They're worth it though. I would have loved these as a kid.

I loved my Sylvanians. I had the school house and the two story house with the loft and the chimney. I had sooo many Sylvanians! My version of "playing" with them was to take all o the Sylvanians out, wipe any dust from the floors and furniture and rearrange everything in the house. My mum still has all my original ones from 23 years ago. When I have kids, they won't be allowed to touch them until they're old enough to appreciate them!!
