I had a bright pink Skip-It with a counter on the side of the ball, also had dollar store knock offs, little plastic ball attached to a rubber or plastic cord with a plastic ring, basically same idea just the skip-it people were first to be smart and market them! lol

I grew up in the 70's, and Skip-it started out as just a lemon shape with no counter at all haha..But I definitly remember those and hula hoops.
Amanda - May 09, 2008 - Report this comment
I had a red one with a counter. It might still be hanging around my parents house somewhere. Skip-its and jump ropes definately took up 4th and 5th grade recess.

I wish I had the mad skills to skip it. I was so jealous of the girls who had them...especially the pink ones. I finally bought one at a garage sale when I was in college and I secretly practice every chance I get.
Ann - May 14, 2008 - Report this comment
I had a pink one. I bought my little cousin a yellow one (an original one like mine) from a thrift store. She just didn't get it. I wonder if she still has the thing. I'll just have to take it back from her.
Char - May 18, 2008 - Report this comment
Skip its are awesome. My friend and I were just talking about it today. And I need one now! I used to play all the time a recess and i was tied for like best in the grade and the other girl always used to cheat and make us to redos because there was a crack... we are best friends now, but back then it was very serious.

I had to go buy one (I'm on this "childhood toys" kick) BUT THEY GOT RID OF "THE VERY BEST THING OF ALL!!!" -there's not a counter on this ball. . .so I can't try to beat my very best score and I can't see if I can jump a whole lot more!!!

I remember wanting one of these so bad, but my mom was like "Please, we had something like that when I was young, I'll make one for you." So she cut the leg off a pair of nylons, stuck a tennis ball in the toe and tied the other end loosely around my ankle. I was like "Uh, yeah, not quite what I had in mind", but I still used it.
stephani - October 01, 2008 - Report this comment

Thinking back to this masochistic device, all I remember is a chafed ankle where I slipped on that plastic ring, and I think I'm STILL suffering from joint damage on the opposite ankle where I didn't "skip it" well enough end ended up "smashing it".

this is a great form of exercise for kids and very inexpensive. Why is it the big chain stores don't carry and it can only be ordered from online? We loved these as kids and always gave them to friends at birthday parties.
Ben - February 08, 2010 - Report this comment
Wow, this brings back memories for me! I remember the counter would never work right because usually I was 'skipping-it' fast enough for the ball swirl around, above the ground. However, I also remember testing it slowly on the carpet, and the counter would work somewhat.

I fractured my wrist playing with the skip-it. It tangled around my ankles and I fell down... It was fun, though.

I can't believe that i forgot about these toys, they were fantastic fun, i used to use my next door neighbours and a group of us would have timed competitions to see how fast it took us to reach 100 skips. Best 90s toy EVA

Ariel - September 03, 2010 - Report this comment
When I was little, I had a yellow one that counted the skips you made. It kind of just disappeared, I think, though. I forgot how much I loved skip its until my older sister found a knock-off one in her trunk. I was so excited that I played with it outside in the dark immediately and yesterday me and my friend played with it, too. I totally think that they should start manufacturing the old-school ones again.

A skip-it wasn't as skilled as skipping with the hoola hoop spinning around your ankle. But the Skip-IT wasn't invented yet.So that's what we did in the 60s and 70s. I think that was where the idea originated. But we also tied a jump rope around our ankle loosely and skipped with it like the Skip-IT. The jump rope had a wooden handle you skipped over. Ideas you might try as an alternative.
