They got recalled? I remember kids spreading 'dark tales' about bullies using the wire inside but I didn't ever think anything came of it.

The original slap bracelets weren't ever recalled, but some knock offs, which weren't as well made, were recalled.

I remember these. They were really, really popular at my school. Eventually, we weren't allowed to bring them in anymore.

The newer ones were recalled too. The paint in some (the ones that weren't covered in felt) had lead! Just another thing to worry about.

So cool.. i had a some of these, junk chains, pacifiers on a chain, troll dolls. More early 90's than 80's, but still cool. these seem to go right in step with the plastic circle thing with the line through it that you used to gather the end of a big t-shirt with when you were wearing leggings, right

7 Eleven were selling these for a short time and then I bought a care bear one at Claire's in 2002.

Bracelets of death! They're like razor blades when you take the fabric off. I still have a scar on my arm where my friend cut me with one, lol! Ah, the memories...

I remember when these got banned from my middle school...along with the game "pencil break." Man, administrators had some extra time on their hands back then.

These were silly...I never had one but I do remember the craze. I was more into friendship bracelets and hot-loop bracelets.
Kate - January 03, 2009 - Report this comment
we used to call them slap bands... maybe that's just in Australia though
Dan - January 27, 2009 - Report this comment
Was it really necessary to ban these from school? I mean, how much damage could you really do with a slap bracelet? I used to be a champion pencil fighter. I was going to go pro until I blew out my thumb.
Jenn - February 07, 2009 - Report this comment
I used to love these bracelets and had a collection but they did hurt when the material used to wear away!! lol!!! I walked around with alot of red wrists, all in the name of fashion!!
Val - April 29, 2009 - Report this comment

Big in my school as well (I was in 6th grade in '91). I think the first ones were recalled because the metal rusting onto kids wrists (kids would wear them in the bathtub, at the pool, EVERYWHERE. My first slap bracelet was aneon green and said "Don't have a cow man!" around it. Now if that ain't a retro classic...
80sBaby - April 10, 2010 - Report this comment

I had these and in 3rd grade they were banned from my school because they sometimes cut your wrist. We actually sell new versions at my work, Burlington Coat Factory for like, .48! Ha!
