I had one that was called Speak'n' Math. It was like the Speak 'n' Spell, it was just a gray one. It got lost over the years.
Tosha - June 02, 2007 - Report this comment
This game had me spelling words like "scissors" when I was only 3 years old.. Once I got to school, I always won all my classroom spelling bees and I beat the whole school twice.
Amanda - June 04, 2007 - Report this comment
I never had one, but after watching E.T. I always wanted one!
laurie - July 01, 2007 - Report this comment
This thing taught me the difference between aisle & isle. I'll never go down the "isle" in a store again.

I had both the Speak-n-Spell and Speak-n-Math and I loved them!! The computerized voice was so advanced at the time. Oh how I wish I could find these for my nieces and nephews.
Elsje - July 25, 2007 - Report this comment
I had this and the Speak-n-Math too! They were the best! I think they had a lot of special cartridges? That's what I didn't have..
DaShon - August 06, 2007 - Report this comment
I had a Speak-n-Spell too! I had won the classroom spelling bee, and was the only 4th grader left in the school-wide competition. I went against two 5th graders and ended up in 3rd place (by getting nervous and misspelling the easy word "rely"). But I was the best speller in the 4th grade!
80s4eva - August 14, 2007 - Report this comment
I remembered spelling my first word on it and was hooked instantly!
Kelly - August 30, 2007 - Report this comment
I had the spelling and math ones. Since I can't add to save my life, I think the math one failed me. I'm a good speller, though. LOL
krikit96 - September 01, 2007 - Report this comment
OMIGOD!!! That computerized voice: "Press the letters I say in reverse order" WOW! This just took me back there! I guess I never realized it but I've always been a great speller...I guess it was because of the speak and spell..mines wasn't like the one in the picture though, it was smaller and didn't have the huge black screen...
Charlie - September 13, 2007 - Report this comment
Laurie, that is too funny about aisle and isle. Do you remember how it would say "isle meaning island"???
Charlie - September 13, 2007 - Report this comment
And my favorite game on there was the "say it" one. It would a word on the screen and say "say it", then whatever that word was. It would do this ten times and then after the last word it would say "spell" one of the words it picked from the 10 at random and then keep doing that until you spelled all 10.

R.A. - July 13, 2008 - Report this comment
Why did they stop making this?? I played with mine on all of our road trips and became a remarkable speller-won regional. I would love to have one for my son.
A Bills child of the 80's - July 15, 2008 - Report this comment
My sisters and I had bright red ones, I agree with "R.A." I wish they still made these just the way they did 20+ years ago kidz would so benefit from this simple electronic device. Hooray for Texas Instruments...they made a lot of good electronics in the 80's!!!!
Susanna - July 22, 2008 - Report this comment
I always wanted 1 of these but my Mum and Dad couldn't afford it,the only time i played on 1 was when i went roun a fiends house for tea.
Danielle - August 13, 2008 - Report this comment
Oh, I loved my Speak N Spell, what a fantastic thing. It was right up there with my Casio piano. And that computerized voice. After reading these comments, I remember the swear words, though I only knew one, and the repeat button so it would repeat your bad word over and over.

i loved this machine, and i loved playing the mystery word game, but i also remember getting really anxious if i was taking too many wrong guesses because the robot voice would go "I WIN!" very menacingly!!

Starr - November 05, 2008 - Report this comment
I had all 3, Speak & Spell, Speak & Read and Speak & Math. I loved them!! I wish they still made them in the same simple way (compared to today's standards), so that I could get one of each for my niece. I think about this every so often. I'm going to have to do some more research to try to find one and contact TI to tell them they should make them again!!
Emily - November 08, 2008 - Report this comment

The one word that stuck with me was "SCHEDULE" I could never spell it right but then i was only 4yrs old but after i mastered it i thought i was the Champion of all words.. I still have all mine in great condition! The best learning tools of the 80's! Kudo's to Texas Instrument....

I just found a "Speak and Math" at GoodWill today. Problem is.. it has major static problems. We have an adapter for it. It seems the more we push buttons, and give it a good old fashioned smack in the back its improving! Any one else have this problem???
Toya - August 28, 2009 - Report this comment
I'm 26 and my mom/dad bought me this toy in either '85 or '86. I loved it to no end and it is probably partly responsible for my being advanced in reading and writing (according to those standardized school tests). I also participated in several spelling bees and went to nationals in third grade. I still have my speak and spell along with most of my childhood toys and it still works. Every now and then I put batteries in and play with it when I'm feeling nostalgic. This is a great toy and they should definately put it back in production. I know they have leap frog and all of that now but the speak and spell was and still is the..you know. Nothing can beat the voice....Say It!!

I LOVED my Speak n Spell! I remember staying up late at night "behind" my parent's back (so it was probably 8pm, and they could hear the machine) playing with it! They knew it was doing me well, so they didn't make a fuss. I'm looking ALL over for one for my son! He's 4.5 and I'm pretty sure I got mine around that age! I think I'm going to write TI. These modern kids "laptops" are too confusing. My only complaint is that when I went to learn to type, I was irritated that the letters weren't on the keyboard they way they were on the Speak and Spell!

OMG!!!!!!!!! I freakin loved this toy!! I remember my sister had a blue and when I wanted on my parents bought the red one. I played with it non-stop! I swear, that every spelling bee I entered, I won. I did find it in my old room but I dont know where it is now! I really want my to back! I may be 27 but I really want my toy back. Plus my 2yr old can benifit from it (see I cant spell no more) I need to buy on ASAP!! and exactly why did they stop making these?

I still have mine. It was a childhood highlight! It had such a strong American computer accent. The way it asked you to spell "leisure", as if it rhymed with 'seizure', always amused me. My family still quotes it sometimes. And I say to Mitch, if you really were the voice- totally loved ya!

I remember having Speak & Spell along with Speak & Read (the yellow one), but my parents never got me the Speak & Math. I miss those days and, if Texas Instruments would bring these back in production, I would like to have all three of them for Christmas or my birthday. The ones I had before don't work anymore and I don't even know what happened to them. I haven't seen either one in years. I miss those days. :(
