Description
Playskool Talk 'n Play was a tape player with storybooks that you played along with by pressing the large red, blur, yellow and green buttons. The toy itself was large and white. I remember having Sesame Street and Alvin and the Chipmunks stories

I loved this toy! Remember, Grover says don't push the red button!

Yup, I remember this too. I think one of the Alvin and Chipmunks songs had the lyrics, "As you can plainly see, the Earth is the place to be..." or something.

My son had one. He got it for Christmas of 1984. He loved it and played with it for hours. When he grew up I gave it to his sons to play with. It didn't work so I gave it to him to fix and when he couldn't fix it he threw it away. That made me so mad and I am looking for one just like it. January 23, 2008

Yes! I could not remember the name of my favorite childhood toy, but thankfully I found this page! I got my Talk 'n Play for Christmas, around '86 or '87, and played with it all the time. I called it my "computer"! I think it was a great educational tool and no doubt helped form my early love of reading.

my brother and i had this and it was great! We had almost all of the books but the one that stood out in my mind is "search for the planet cobalt" That was the best and it used "The planets" as background music. The two aliens in the story were named snoid and gaff. Please tell me someone else remembers this!

I loved mine as a kid, so i bought one for my daughter off Ebay. Now Im realizing there were 2 different kinds. One was Playskool and one was something else. I cant remember what the other one is called, but I know the books and tapes worked on both. If anyone has ANY INFO I would REALLY appreciate it!! THANKS!!

Hasbro bought out CBS/Child Guidance who originally made the Talk n' Play. Later it was put out under Playskool(Hasbro)PLEASE write them an email asking them to re-release it!The more letters they get, the higher the chances are they will re-release it. I have one- might need fixing- don't know yet(have to get adapter or working batteries!) My daughter kept busy hours on end for years, and now I want my grand-daughter to have the same fun. Would like to get more books/tapes for it. So Please write Hasbro and request it to be marketed again!

Finally, I've been trying to remember the name of this toy for ages. I was beginning to think I was the only one who had one. I had two stories one was Inspector Gadget and the other had a typewriter? as the main character.

OMG, I loved this toy! I played with it for hours and hours. My favorite book/tape was one called Animal Rock Band. I remember a girl cat named Princess and a boy cat named Louie. I also liked turning the tapes over and listening to them backwards. LOL!!

I remember Search for the Planet Cobalts! I also remember one about a haunted mansion and that one kind of frightened me--my favorite was one with the muppets and they went around the world, I remember they ended up in the tower of london and saw the crown jewels...I liked that.
erin - June 23, 2008 - Report this comment
i remember planet cobalt, and the haunted mansion freaked me out too. i think my favorite was the nursery rhyme one with mother goose. "if your a boy press the blue button, if your a girl press the red button."

I would listen to the tapes backwards too, Shaunna! haha. I broke the tape player somehow...but I REFUSED to let my mom throw it away! I still enjoyed pushing the buttons even if it didn't work. I would pretend it was the console to a space ship or some big important computer thing :P

My favorite toy. I especially liked to hold down yellow and green at the same time and play the backward stuff on the B side of the cassette. Really, this was just a four-track cassette recorder. The Search for the Planet Cobalt was awesome, as was that other more realistic space-themed book.

Santa brought me a Talk 'n Play for Christmas when I was four. Those things were expensive back in the day, but as you can see, very technologically advanced. Heh. I loved mine. I had the Sesame Street tape and the one with the farm animals and one other one. I can't remember which one it was.

I would love to find one too for my grandson. My son had this toy and I also home schooled and he graduated from high school with a 4.5. This toy was one that helped to stimulate his mind and imagination. He especially loved the Chipmunks and the little alien one. Life sure was more innocent then.........too bad you 80s children have had to witness so much nonsense and confusion but then again you came here to witness the change......didn't really want your parents lives did you? I'm not the ordinary mom and I realize that you guys have the potential to make this world a wonderful place. Don't let the system get to you. Take your power and don't give in to the PLAN! Good luck!

I used to play the sesame street book to the end of the tape over and over again. After Oscar would get done yelling at you to turn it over, a scary voice came on to announce the tape was done. What a thrill for a 4 year old! :P Looking for one for my three kids.

I use to play with this toy day and night. My fav. Tape of all was The Haunted House Mystery. Man I loved thatthing. I played it so much it was jumpy in some parts lol. I also liked in Search of planet colbalt, the learning of the space ship and outer space one and the animale Rock band. Iv tryed numrous searches on web pages devoted to the Talk "N" Play and the tapes. But th eonly one I could find was the Muppet Winki which showed the Talk and Play and ovcourse it's Sesame street stories. But none of the other stories. About Three yrs ago I won a Talk "N' Play off E-bay and evntualy tracked down my most fav story th eHaunted House Mystery. I even thought of learning how to make the Haunted House Mystery into a PC game using the sounds and pics off the story. Ovcourse I would need permission from whom ever owns the rights before doing so.

Definitely one of my favorite toys as a kid -- do you guys remember the Halloween book/tape, where the kid visits the haunted house to investigate some missing kids? LOVED it!!

I had one of these! I tell people about it and they think i'm crazy, but it was by far my favorite toy, i still remember it vividly today, and i couldn't have been older than 3 when i used to play with it! The two stories I remember having were sesame street and maybe a Berenstain Bears one?? I can't really remember...the animals playing in a band seems to job my memory as well. Wow what an amazing toy which probably had a bigger impact on my life than i remember, I am a huge book nerd now as well as a computer nerd and in a band myself. I still have mine in the attic along with all of my old childhood toys, might be soon time to have a look for it...great thread!

I just bought about 10 tapes...now i need to find the original talk n play player to play them! I'm so excited. I have very good memories and feelings playing this when I was about 3 years old. I somehow remember it like it was yesterday.

Oh wow...I was just talking to my husband about this the other day! I wish I still had that toy. I used to play "Don't Push the Red Button" with Grover from Sesame Street. I also had an Alvin and the Chipmunks with the Chippettes one that I did a lot. There was a haunted house one that was cool, too.

I loved Talk'N Play. It was by far the best educational toy except for the imfamous 2-XL. 2-XL was not only educational but funny! Remember: "The rain in Spain obviously is affecting your brain. You are WRONG!"

I just pulled out my old Talk n' Play for my daycare kids and was disppointed to find out it didn't work. I wonder if it could be fixed? It still looks new. I was going to throw it away but after reading all of the happy memories, I think I'll see if I can find someone to fix it!

I had this toy as a kid. I used to love to tick Grover off by deliberately pressing the infamous "Red Button." I also liked messing w. the buttons. Like the part where Grover was talking about animals and two of them were a nanny-goat and an octopus. If you timed it just right, you could make Grover say "A cute little Nanny-pus" by pressing a different button while he was in mid sentence. I never had any of the Chipmunks tapes, but would make my own by pressing the wrong button while music was playing, thus speeding up the tape. Ah, the memories of childhood! :(

I am SO PSYCHED to have found this! You have no idea how much it means to me to learn that other people know about Planet Cobalt. I have had the song that they sang at the end ("We're going back, yes, we're going back to Cobalt! Yee-ha!") stuck in my head for twenty years. My other favorite story was about the Monster Clubhouse. My god, I played that machine to death. Fun fact: My sister once utilized its four-track tape deck to record herself performing the entirety of the album Seventeen Seconds by the Cure. She played all of the parts by herself. We have no idea where that tape is now, but I'd do anything to find it.

My husband and I bought Talk and Play 28 years ago for our twin boys. Their favorite books were Sesame Street and they'd play with the toy so much, they learned the stories by heart. Unfortunately, as they outgrew the talk and play, they decided to clean out their closet and get rid of the "old stuff" to make room for the sports equipment. Not knowing they had bagged it up for the trash, I was distraut since they now have children of their own and no longer have the talk and play. Surely, it would've been a "cool" thing for the grandchildren to play with "Dad's toy". I've searched the internet looking for this and can't find one anywhere! Luckily, I managed to hide the wooden puzzles and fisher price playsets before the twins tossed THOSE!

I'm a current educator in grad school who always wondered, what factors contributed to my academic success. Surely being a Mexican, English Language Leaner, growing up in a low-income project neighborhood, the odds where against me. But after searching for the name of my childhood favorite toy and finally remembering that it was the Playskool Talk & Play, I can surely contribute this learning device as a factor in my academic success in early childhood academia, and in my english language learning.I will not rest, until I have this device in my hands once again! My wife and I don't have kids yet, however, my kids will have this learning device!

I bought this for my son in '85. It was used constantly by him then by my daughter when she was old enough. I realized back then how great the 'toy' was and decided to pack it away, unfortunately without the 6V DC adapter that it apparently had (I honestly don't recall). I want to let my 3 year old grandson play with it but would like to use the cord rather than batteries. Any suggestions on how to get one? Anyone know if it is center+ or center-?
