I wanted teddy soo bad when I was a kid. This was one of the toys i didn't get. I'm kind of glad now that I didn't because he would have scared the hell out of me.

I had Teddy Ruxpin and my sister had Grubby. We used to love playing with them and listening to the stories. He only scared me after I broke his lower jaw off. It was a bit traumatic at that age.

My grandmother nearly got into a physical altercation with another woman buying this the Christmas he came out. He was the last one on the shelf and she was determined to get him. Loved him, maybe because he was a bit creepy.

I never had him, but I remember the commercials. I am not sure if I ever wanted him or not. I had a talking 'Julie' doll so I may have just been happy with that.

I had a Teddy Ruxpin. I didn't get a Grubby. My best friend had a Grubby and a Teddy Ruxpin. My imagination was so vivid back then that I imagined myself with Teddy Ruxpin in his world. I can't remember the name of that fairy, but I would imagine myself flying into the sun with her.
Paula - August 08, 2007 - Report this comment
There was something slightly creepy when the batteries ran low. I'd just close his eyes and stick him in the closet at night. I'm sure that he's the reason I'm such an avid reader now, though!

Teddy Ruxpin was such a cool toy. You can buy him on ebay and Target.com if you want to. I remember getting one for Christmas and just loving it. I would take it to the restaurant with me for Christmas breakfast and years later it probably broke or something because I don't have it anymore.

I love my Teddy Ruxpin. I'm 31, and I put him on top of my television. Whenever I listen to a book on tape, I listen to it trough good ol' Teddy; it's awesome. Like "Understanding Islam", "Einstein's Bridge"; Most recently I listened to "Guns, Germs, & Steel." It's swell!

Teddy Ruxpin was the big reason I am such an avid reader now. My daughter has one and we spend time just sitting and listening. Maybe all those people should quit watching movies like Chucky and just enjoy a kids toy.

I'm still mad that my mom never got me a teddy ruxpin! Every year for my birthday and Christmas I would beg her for a Teddy Ruxpin and I always got my hopes up the night before. Then I would wake up in the morning and be disappointed. You all should be appreciative your parents got you such a fancy toy like Teddy Ruxpin. How much did they cost back then anyway? Like when they first came out?

I LOVED (and still love) my Teddy Ruxpin!! I remember getting one for my birthday the year they first came out...that was the ONLY thing I wanted that year!! I was so stoked when I opened that box!! I took him with me everywhere!! I still have the little guy and he still works even though his clothes are a bit worse for wear...my Talking Mother Goose faired much better!! "Hello. I'm Teddy Ruxpin. Can you and I be friends? I really enjoy talking to people..." LOVED IT!!! Although the buzzing noise that accompanied the movements on both toys was a bit annoying!! Still a sweet concept for a toy!

I wanted a Teddy Ruxpin (and Grubby) so badly. I ended up getting a sort of rip off of Teddy, Gabby Bear. I enjoyed him enough (I still have him), but I remember feeling cheapened that it wasn't Teddy :(

Teddy Ruxpin, was by far the SCARIEST toy I've ever owned my entire childhood. He had red eyes!! Not the greatest thing for a talking toy to have. This was one of the toys I never wanted but ended up getting for my birthday. I remember using him, maybe twice, and then throwing him into the back of my closet. =P

Oh yes, he was soooo scary!!! I still remember being terrified of him one night. My parents couldn't get me to calm down even by putting him in the closet or somewhere because I thought he would get mad and get me! They then took him over to my Grandma's house who lived right behind us and I remember staying up all night worried that he was going to hurt her!

i had one too as a kid.Loved him and the story. Red eyes? no last time i looked they were brown. dont understand what is so creepy about a small furry teddy bear with a gentle disposition, and friendly voice.......I loved the Lullaby book the best. His singing to me was so soothing it put me to sleep every night. Some of you apparently never had older siblings that would watch movies like Freddie and Jason and Chucky- now for a 4 year old in the 80s THAT was scary.

While I think AG Bear was the better talking bear, I still think Teddy Ruxpin is one of the best toys of the 80s. And I don't get why so many people think of him as creepy. If an innocent talking bear scared you, then you must have had problems. I hated talking dolls, but I was fascinated by Teddy and I wasn't the bravest kid. I begged for one but never got one. Too expensive.

I had a Teddy Ruxpin when I was little, then I sold himat a yeard sale when I was a teenager. I have regretted it ever since. I have 2 small children of my own now, and saw a Teddy Ruxpin DVD in the store, so of course I bought it (it reminded me of my childhood) and to my surprise...my kids like it too. As fate would have it I was a t the "free exchange" a few weekd ago and found the origional Teddy Ruxpin and a Grubby. I brought them home, and they dont work but I think I might still keep them (or at least the Teddy!)

When I woke up that Christmas morning and there was no Teddy Ruxpin, I was absolutely heartbroken. I tried not to let it show, but I know they knew how upset I was. I'm still about to cry thinking about that Christmas when Santa didn't come through. :(

I still haven't a clue why anyone thinks that Teddy was creepy or anything like that. We only had the original doll & tape. It was my son's & his favorite "friend" or toy, hands down. My son was a late talker & no doubt, "Teddy" encouraged him & we credit Teddy for teaching him to speak. Today, at 30, he's a successful attorney! Thanks TEDDY! You were the BEST!. One thing we need help on. In a move @ 9 years ago, his Teddy blanket got lost. Does anyone know where we could find another Teddy Ruxpin blanket. Yes, a 30 y.o. married lawyer still yearns for his lost Teddy blankie. Please leave a message here & I'll get back to you. Thanks so much.

And I don't know where all these people come off saying he was creepy. You want creepy? My sister had that Cricket doll... Now SHE was creepy!!!

I was born in 1985 and have a vague memory of Teddy Ruxpin reading a Winnie the Pooh story in an upstairs playroom.. I am not sure if it was my house or a neighbor's house (I would go with my mom to babysit the neighbor's kids sometimes). I need to look Teddy Ruxpin up on Youtube because I can't remember what he sounds like!

I had Teddy Ruxpin when I was a little girl. I would listen to the lullaby tape and sleep with him :) He was my absolute favorite toy from the 80s so I bought him off eBay. Found a perfectly working Grubby at Value Village for $1. I have the orange fob puppet too.

I'm 35, born 1977, and got Teddy for my 9th birthday during the height of his craze in 1986. I remember vividly how I wanted the thing after I saw that POP display. I mean at that point all my previous stuffed animals didn't talk, or if they did, they didn't move their mouths in unison with their voices. Teddy was the first, and to me still the greatest animated talking toy. I'm blessed enough to remember when I got him, unlike these who were 4 or 5, and in kindergarted, since I was a 4th grader. Of course, others in my class said he was for kindergarten kids, and they're right, as it's for 3 and up, but I didn't care then that I loved him, and I don't care today in my mid-30's either!!

Does anyone have the store display airship for Teddy and Grubby that I can buy?? I need it to keep them in for a three year old who is slightly intimidated by them. She loves to watch them perform and enjoys their songs and stories.. from a distance! Please email me at charlilove@gmail.com if you do. Thank you

Does anyone remember some of the lines he said? I can't remember and I really need to know. Didn't he open his eyes and say something like "Hi, my name is Teddy." Or what exactly did he say? Please post if you remember.

I think every kid has that toy that they desperately wanted but never got. For me that's Teddy Ruxpin. I was fascinated by him. Never before had a toy been so lifelike. One of the best descriptions I've ever read of Teddy pointed out that he seemed less like a toy and more like an actual creature. I don't see Teddy as being creepy, but toys like this do tend to freak some people out. A lot of people are scared of Furbys for the same reasons. I love these kinds of toys myself. Also does anyone remember Baby Teddy Ruxpin? You don't hear much about that version. It's a smaller version of Teddy. It's still animated but it doesn't play tapes. Instead it responds to your voice. Talk to him and he talks back with one of a few different phrases. I bought one of these online a few years ago. Pretty cool. One more thing before I go, it's probably not a good idea to use non Teddy Ruxpin tapes in Teddy. Whenever you do that you run the risk of breaking him. Where most animated talkers will work with any tape ( or at least the ones I've had would ) Teddy Ruxpin was designed to respond to certain cues imbedded in his tapes that allowed his mouth and eye movements to synch up with the tapes. This is part of what makes Teddy's animations more lifelike than those of other animated talkers. Whereas most talkers just move their mouths blindly Teddy's animations actually match the tapes. It makes Teddy more lifelike but it also means that tapes without those cues inbedded in them can cause Teddy to go a bit haywire. I've heard many a tale of Teddy ceasing to function after using a non authorized tape in him. So as funny as it might be to watch Teddy to try to lip synch to Michael Jackson's Thriller it probably isn't a good idea to make the attempt if you want to keep Teddy functioning properly.

I was 24 years old when Teddy Ruxpin came out. I got my Teddy Ruxpin W.O.W. at Sears Toy Apt. Before Toys R Us open there stores. Then I got Grubby. I don't have the W.O.W. Teddy Ruxpin any more.

I had the 1998 version with the red shirt when I was a toddler and later when I got a little older I found the books and tapes I had for it and decided I'd look it up online at an early age. I found a site called YouTube and saw a video of a Grubby singing with Teddy and I was like I want a Grubby too! So my grandma found a place online called Dr.Eeyore's hospital when I was 7 and I received a restored Teddy Ruxpin & his pal Grubby with 4 books and tapes when I was 7 years old. Ever since then I've been a big fan and have almost all the books and tapes, outfits, etc. for him. My favorite tape to listen to before I went to bed was Lullabies. That illiop and octopede still help me sleep to this very day when I can't get to sleep. I'm happy that I grew up with these toys. They're not creepy or scary to me. Teddy & Grubby are some of my favorite characters. Hope when I grow up my kids will enjoy them too

I loved this show as a kid! Never got the actual toy due to my mom only finding price jackers on Amazon selling it for $500! She gave me a figurine of Grubby instead. Also, my math teacher's niece loves this show. At least it's better than most trash on TV like SpongeBob SquarePants.
