I remember that you had to have one of these when I was a kid. I think mine had kittens on it.
Balmy - May 07, 2007 - Report this comment
I begged for one of these and received one as an early Christmas present. Everyone at school had a different one. It was a major fad. Mine had air brushed butterflies.

Wow, Trapper Keepers... I had a few Lisa Frank ones, with various themes (unicorn, puppies, geometric shapes, etc.), all in that HIDEOUS hot pink... what I wouldn't do to have another one!

I had several... one was probably plain, but the one I remember was grey with a photo of unicorns. Or maybe just horses. But I prefer to remember it as unicorns, because... hello, "Unicorn Trapper-Keeper"! :D

I was deprived of a trapper keeper when I was a kid :( lol. Anyways, I have 5 kids now and was like I wonder if they still make them. So, I was shopping at walmart, and bought 1 of each so my kids could each have one for school this year. I think they looked MUCH cooler back in the day, jmo though!
Sam - July 31, 2007 - Report this comment
OMG the trapper keepers now are so much cooler, they have them so that you can costumize the covers.
Ryan L. - August 01, 2007 - Report this comment
Trapper keepers were like the absolute coolest things, I remember coming home with mine and watching Good Times and Facts of Life reruns. What a walk down memory lane this is, hey Brian G. my favorite color is beige too.
DaShon - August 06, 2007 - Report this comment
Mine was black with multi-colored paint streaks. If you did not come to school with a Trapper Keeper, you were not cool!
Kathy - August 07, 2007 - Report this comment
If you do a search on ebay on vintage trapper keeper, there are some listed right now. It was very cool to check out the pictures of the others that are currently listed and have recently sold. Ahhh, memories!

Oh wow! I sure do remember the Trapper Keeper's back in the day. I had one with a white puppy on it. So cool!!! I have actually been looking for one for my kids this year. No luck yet. I asked a few of the employee's at Wal-Mart and they look at me like (What the heck is a Trapper keeper). LOL! :). Obviously it was before there day. All they know about is those plain old "Five Star" things. (Sigh) To live in the 80's again and be young. :)

OMG, I loved these! I had two: a black one with red stripes and a purple one with like pink strobe lights. Does anybody remember the competitor, Tabs?
Becca - October 17, 2007 - Report this comment
Gosh! I had to have a new one every year! I remeber a plain purple one, a black one with paint splashes, and one of the beach with the word paradise written on it. I think the last one I got was blue and purple with goemetric shapes and polka dots or something. We all used to constantly open and close them just to tick off the teachers, lol.

I LOVE the Trapper Keeper! I had the blue one with Hot Air Balloons! So rad.
Diskoboy - November 13, 2007 - Report this comment
I started 1st grade the year these first came out,in 1978. The original TK's used those snap button closures, and really sucked. But I still had one every year throughout my tenure. I quit buying them around high school, but Trapper Keepers were an absolute godsend. Especially in the late 80's, when the TK's quality got progressively better, every year.
Robin - January 11, 2008 - Report this comment
Mine had a tiger on it. I remember a teacher who would not let us have trapper keepers in her class because she hated the sound of the velcro opening!

I had one in second grade. I think that I saw it in my mom's attic so I must still have it. Mine had dolphins on it.

Trapper Keepers were actually banned at our school because everyone would take the folders out and set the trapper keeper and all the folders upright on their desk and make little "cubicles". We did it for months before the teachers got wise and realized we were goofing off behind them...LOL. God I miss that thing--I would love to have another one just for old times' sake.

Oh my Gosh, Everyone had to have a Trapper Keeper or it was like the world was coming to an end at my school. I sat next to a girl that had kittens on hers and one of the many I had that stuck out in my head was the one with different geometric shapes in different colors. I loved that you had to push in a little tab to close to rings of the binders unlike the traditional binders.
Maura - June 04, 2008 - Report this comment
I had a new one every year. I remember one had kittens, another had a unicorn and another had a geometric pattern! I thin kthey came with 3-4 different colored folders. You HAD to have a trapper keeper!
RFO - June 19, 2008 - Report this comment
I must've had a new one of these every school year, until i got completely fed up with the silly plastic rings that slid to the side rather than clipping open and shut like other binders; usually broken by the third week of class.

Every year on the 'back to school' shopping trip, I would get a new lunchbox and a new Trapper Keeper!! I think it lead to my being the anal retentive filer that I am today!! "OMG the trapper keepers now are so much cooler, they have them so that you can costumize the covers."....We used to customize the old ones. All you had to do was pick at the corner untill you go the plastic loose enought to fit your scissors in and cut a slit in the front. then you'd slide in a Tiger Beat poster of Michael J Fox, Kirk Cameron, or the New Kids On The Block and you were set!!!

Worthless... completely worthless. I mean, all the geeky kids used theirs religiously, but mine was COMPLETELY for show as you had absolutely NO street-cred without it. At the beginning of the school year I filled it with pens, paper, staper, tape, etc... with good intentions, but never ended up using it as advertised.

One thing I remember is the smell of the plastic. It's unbelievable how happy it can make you thinking back on all this stuff. I'm bidding on one of these now and I can't believe I'm going to pay 30-40 bucks for it. I'm on a mission to buy back my favorite childhood things.

I had three of these when I was a kid. I loved them! They were expensive though, I had to beg my mom for them. First one I had was w/ a balloon on the cover, the second had a tiger on it & the third had the ferrari. I think I liked the balloon one the best b/c it reminded me of summer, the best season.

My school wouldn't let us have Trapper Keepers. The school supply list called for a three ringed binder, but specifically said "NO TRAPPER KEEPERS" I wonder if it was because the velcro made noise when it was opened? It made me want a TK all the more because they were "contraband"

Mine was purple and had an exploding TV that said "Video Rock".
DJ - June 08, 2010 - Report this comment
I had the plain purple one in 3rd gr. By 4th gr. they got fancy. I got the grey kitten one and in 6th gr. I one w/a cartoonish looking beach scene. That year there were like only 7 scenes and kids at school got mad at others for "copying" them. I rem. class would begin and I left my papers inside...I would try so desperately hard to open the velcro as quietly as possible w/out the obnoxious "RRRIIIPPP" it used to make. Hey, how cool was the plastic clip in there that kept your pen? :D

I had the fancy ones in sixth grade. I JUST threw it away while cleaning out my attic. I remember the notepad in the back and the two folders that came with it. The plastic-mesh thing in the front was "cool" back then. LOL

Mine had lightning on it if I remember correctly. 'Cos you know... When I was 7, I was just THAT badass lol.
Lynne - January 26, 2011 - Report this comment
I had one. To the best of my recollection, it was black with either red dots or hearts all over it and a picture of a lily pond on the front. Not sure if it was the velcro or snap closure though. I want to say snap.
Me - February 24, 2011 - Report this comment
Hey, trappers were the bomb. They had a smell all their own. It wasn't complete without a zipper pocket inside where you put your pencils pens, and the occasional half-mooned shape ruler!
Melissa - May 07, 2011 - Report this comment
I need another one. These days they have the fabric ones w/ the zipper that goes all the way around. It's bulky and takes time to unzip.
Maegan - June 17, 2011 - Report this comment
I grew up in the 90s and I had one, not a hand-me-down. In third grade, the supply list specifically said no trapper keepers. But my mom got me one anyway. Mine had an airbrushed picture of a huge buffalo type animal staring at two scuba divers under water. One scuba diver went towards the animal, and another one is trying to get away. Its really odd, and I love it and I have never seen another one like it. Email the mead company! If enough people ask, they might bring them back.
Rose - June 17, 2011 - Report this comment
I had 2 growing up in the 80's. One was geometric designs,3D-ish squiggles, and paint splatters in purple, grey, turquoise, black&white. The other one had a picture (real life not cartoon/illustration) of two fuzzy calico kittens. I can google and track down an image of the kitty one, can't seem to find a pic of the other one as of yet...

I have a TK in MINT condition NEW with tags still on it. It has the red blue and green folders but is missing the pad of paper. NO DAMAGE and it has the "floating hearts" theme. EMAIL JODA26@live.com Teachers hated them because of the smell velcro noise and we use to turn them sideways and make cubicles out of them...to read books, pass notes and doodle!!! LMAO.

The Trapper Keeper was a must for school, everybody thought they were so cool. First I had one with a photograph of a tiger and a light blue as background. Then the "Designer Series" came and they were awesome, I got a new trapper keeper that had what looked like very realistic sand and some cool letters on top ( I don't remember what it said), and foamy water, like tides. And I also purchased very cool folders, one with a cool drawing of a palm tree splashed with water. I wonder were those trapper keeper illustrators are now.
