I've had a Video Smarts console since it was first introduced. I will submit a picture sometime this week. In my opinion, it's one of the best learning products ever produced. I used it for my niece who was born in 1985 and for my children born 1990 and '95 as well as for the children I tutor. I've always produced videos for my students to assist with their learning so the Video Smarts Console was and still is perfect. I have one working model left as well as a console that does not work. I'm looking for someone to fix it. The students love the interaction. They will literally fight over who will be first to press the buttons to answer the questions presented. The truly do learn from Video Smarts. The videos are as important today as they were years before. V-Tech should bring it back.

I bought Video Smarts for my son who was born in 1985, he used it then my daughter and then all my nephews. I still have it and 7 tapes in the storage closet. (saving it for my grandchildren!!) It was the absolute best teaching tool!! They really should come out with a DVD version. The colors were wonderful and the songs and the interaction with the game held their attention. It was always a favorite with the kids.

My oldest daughter also used Videosmarts, she was born in 1985. I remember that she loved it! I saved it for many years, but then sold it and the tapes a few years ago thinking I would have no more children. Well, last year I had another baby. Last week, I found the old Videosmarts console (I never sold it after all!). It looks a bi corroded where the batteries were, so I don't know if it still works. Plus, I still think I gave away the tapes, as I can't find them. Long story short, does anyone know of anyplace where I can buy the tapes? Thanks.

I don't remember too much about Videosmarts anymore, but I remember having this when I was young. I was born 1984, got it at 2 or three years old. I remember I LOVED getting to go into mom's room, have her hook up the Videosmarts, and I would sit and watch the tapes and pushing the buttons to answer the questions. Some day I may have to hunt downa working console and some tapes to check it out again, maybe let friends' children try it.

My younger brother and I used to love this game growing up. We had a house fire a few years back and unfortunately the Videosmarts game system was among the many things we lost. I've been searching everywhere for another system. This site is the closest thing I've found that actually proves that it once existed. I'm glad to have found at least a picture! I'd love to find someone that has a working system. I just remember forgetting to turn the system off after playing it and having it scare my mom with the "turn me off" announcement it had!

My sister and I are trying in vain to track down this console and we cannot find any information on it what-so-ever let alone the toy for sale. We loved this toy, especially the videos, so if anyone has it, could they please upload the VHS's on youtube or google video just so there is some evidence of this toy existing online? If anyone does that for us we are eternally greatful.

I bought the video console for our son who was born in 1986. The greatest educational tool ever!!! I wish Vtech would bring it back. Mine finally broke and I really miss sharing the education with the new generation.

I was born in 1985 and I remember having a Videosmarts. It taught me well and I loved Teaching Teddy so much. It was a great learning tool and I wish they had an update for my toddler.

I dig video smarts! I was born in 1982 and I had video smarts...what a amazing thing for a child. I think my favorite was the alphabet town one. The console was really a trip..."turn-me-off..." and then there was the fake water fish. What made me think of this was the windows logo...because it has the same four colors; but in the opposite layout. Let's get ready it's Teachin' Teddy and we're sure to learn some...

I was born in 1986 and I LOVED LOVED LOVED this toy! I wanted to buy it for my baby cousin but I can't find it anywhere. My mother says it's the reason (and Sesame Street) that I turned out to be so smart.. lol. Does ANYONE have any idea where I can get one? Maybe the person who runs this site should send all of these comments into the makers of it so they can redistribute.

I bought a Video Smarts system on ebay about a year ago. Ebay is really the only place to find one anymore. I had one as a kid and LOVED it! Except for the dreaded "TURN ME OFF" voice!! Now I'm looking for the Computer Smarts system they advertise in the Video Smarts videos. If anyone has any information on Computer Smarts, or could at least confirm it actually exists... that would be wonderful, especially if you know where I can find one! I had Viseo Smarts, Teaching Teddy, for all 3 of my children. I had saved it hoping to have it for my Grandchildren. Well, when my house burned down, we lost everything and the ironic part is that 15 years later, now that I have a 2 year old granddaughter, all I miss is my Video Smarts-Teaching Teddy game. If anyone knows where I can get one, please E-mail me. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hannah - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
Green, they never came out with DVDS for video smarts, only VHS tapes... i wish they would though. There wasn't any talking with video smarts, you did all your answers with the 4 little buttons on the controller thing. The controller only talked when you left it on.

My brother had Video Smarts back in 1987 when he was 4-5 years old, and he really learned from the tapes. I could tell he was picking up letters, numbers, comparison words, and other concepts because he started noticing things in passing. I'll never forget when the show "Hey Vern it's Earnest" was on and he said "What's this H V stuff?" He hadn't learned to read yet, but at least he recognized the big letters at the beginning of words. I was 17 at the time, and I actually made a Video Smarts question of my own by laying objects out on colored pieces of paper and copying the beep from one of the tapes. To this day, my brother and I still joke about the way they would say "Find the (whatever)...Beep!" By the way, I saw the Numbers 1-5/Comparisons tape and the Nutrition Health & Safety tape on YouTube. If you hook up a VideoSmarts computer to the audio out jack on your sound card, you can make it work!

I found mine!!! It was lost after my parents got devorced and we moved around a bit but I found a few months ago at my grandparents house :) You have to press really hard on the buttons to make it work but my 2 yr old loves it as much as I did as a kid. I crack up everytime I think of the "turn me off" because I remember my brother and I running out of our bedroom to tell my mom that there was a man in our closet. LOL she came charging in with a baseball bat only to find it was the game :)

oh man, Teachin' Teddy is such a staple of my childhood. Born in 1986, I played this just about every day when I was 3-5ish. I remember one time, after we had packed everything up into boxes and into the garage.... a very scary sounding "turn.....me......offf" was emitting from a shelf. Guessing the batteries were dying. oops! Not sure what became of it since then really, would love to get my hands on a working console.

I'm trying to find info on just how this toy works. I know the "press an answer" tone (4 quick tones actualy) sends the actual answer to the unit for the kid to choose, but I wonder exactly how the data is structured. Timing differences? Seems to be between the 3rd and 4th tone between different "answers" but not sure. Phase difference between left and right? You mentioned connecting to a stereo VCR. How many bits 2 (since there are 4 possible answers? Any start-stop bits? This info can help people make their own tapes.

On the upper right corner of the image that features the front of the box this system was contained in, there seems to be a reference to what age this program was intended for. It's quite small, could you tell me what age the box says this program was intended to benefit? I know someone had said there were tapes made for this system, which were intended for older kids, but I'm embarrassed to say that I used the regular tapes in 1986 when I was 5 and possibly even at 6 in 1987, which made me way too old for it, but I'm wondering what demographic the creators of this program had in mind when they initially created this system? We got the VideoSmarts in 1987 when my first son was born. By age 2, he was reading and doing basic addition and subtraction. By age 3, he was reading newspapers at night with me and doing basic arithmetic on his own. At age 4, he knew all his shapes and was accepted to kindergarten, but due to his age, we had to wait another year. He received all kinds of accolades during his elementary and high school years. Fast forward - he applied and got accepted to the Air Force Academy, West Point, and Villanova. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in '09 and is now an Air Force officer. His younger brother also used the VideoSmarts and learned from Teachin Teddy. He also got accepted and is now attending the Air Force Academy and doing well. The VideoSmarts made a significant impact in the early stages of our kids' lives that contributed to their success today. WE LOVE TEACHIN TEDDY!!! Unfortunately, we don't have it (or the videos) anymore. I think we gave them away to another family back when they had younger children.

I was born in 1981. My brother Mark was born in 1983, and my sister Amanda was born in 1986. We used to enjoy playing Video Smarts all the time. My other brother and other sisters so and so. You would connect your VS to your TV and VCR, the device was wight with 4 color coded buttons: Blue, Green, Red and Yellow. Two worms: Green on the left indicating a wright answer and Red on the right indicating a wrong answer. The program had a bear named Teachin' Teddy and other charachters as well. It was a great icon of the 1980's. We still have a VCR but we also have dvd's, blue rays, Wii, internet, etc. We still have ours stored somewhere in the attic, maybe I'll take it out again and play it for old time sake and hopefully our children will enjoy it atleast once. :)

Homeschooled my Autistic, retarded son on Video Smarts because it was the only thing that could keep his attention span for learning. One of the keys no longer work. V-tech says they only market each toy for 3-5 years, and the new people employed there do not even remember this game; but informed me that in October of 2016 they will be putting a similar educational unit on the market, but they are not allowed to share the name of this upcoming unit at this time. I'm looking to buy a unit that still works well. If you know where I can find one in the Orlando, Florida Area, please email me at...Sanigel79@yahoo.com IF YOU HAVE A CHILD WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY VIDEO SMARTS IS THE WAY TO GO. I hope the one released next year will be a television interactive game with tons of good music as the original one was !!

My daughter has an intellectual disability and never stops talking about teaching teddy. The console stopped working and I couldnt get it fixed. I wish I had, as she wants me to get another one. She is 31 years old and learnt so much on this system. I copied the tapes on to DVD and they used to work the same as the VHS tapes. I have noticed no-one has ever mentioned this. This might help someone. I also look forward to the new educational unit in October 2016. Thanks for that information. Vivien

I'm looking forward to the 2016 version of VideoSmarts. I have several tapes that I converted to DVDs and a non-working console. It belonged to my nephew who was born in '85 and it was shared with my niece ('88) and my son ('89). They loved it. My son was reading at 2; My niece at 3. All three excelled in school. My son went on to graduate from MIT. Videosmarts was an easy intro to the world of reading. I hope the new version lives up to the original.

That's the game that always had that kids voice that said Turn Me Off. I'm glad I'm not the only one who heard that.
