Actually, they had been around, before they 80's, but from 1985 to 1988, it was like EVERYBODY had one. Boys and girls wore them. I had several of them, actually. I just loved them. It was worn by punk and metal fans, yes, but it was soon adopted by the preppies, in blue, washed-out blue, and black, mostly. After that, kids who didn't fit into any dressing category or style began to wear them. And later, our mothers started buying their own... (I think that's a problem we had in the 80,s, with our baby boomer parents wanting to be forever hip, etc)... They were also very popular, I remember, in the 90's. I would say, mostly from 1990 to 1996. In the late 90's, someone came up with the idea of almost unbelievably tight jeans jackets for women, and hip hop-style jeans jackets, oversized and seemingly devoid of sructure... Anyway, I still love Levi's classic jackets, and I think, with so many things eighties having come back, the Levi's is just begging to do the same!

I totally agree with everything said by Jean-Francois above. I loved jean jackets as a kid in the 80's, they made me feel cool! I had the classic Levi's jackets a few times and then (ugh) a purple wash denim jacket in 1988. That wasn't so cool! I recall in the late 1990's when the tight jeans jackets for women came into fashion. I remember Madonna during the Ray of Light album wore one with nothing underneath and tightly buttoned, with the sleeves rolled up to 3/4 length sleeves. I admit that I still wear my jean jacket that way, the rolled sleeves but unbuttoned over a sundress in the spring. I love that look. I do think one major difference from the way jean jackets were worn in the 80's versus the 90's to present is that now people really don't wear JEANS with them, but other types of pants and clothing. To wear jeans and a jean jacket simultaneously was cool in the 80's but is generally considered out of fashion now and some jokingly call it a "lumberjack tuxedo" or "Canadian tuxedo" (please no offense to Canadians just something I've heard).

Thanks, Angela. But you know what...? They're back! Generation Y kids are buying them on eBay. I guess Levi,s will soon begin making them the way they used to, and it will be the next big thing. I'm glad!
