Description
Burger King had a ham and cheese sandwich called the Yumbo. It was hot and the cheese was melted much like the cheese you get with nachos so it was pretty messy but always delicious!

The Yumbo was a great sandwich. The cheese was messy. The cheese was, however, sliced yellow american, not a whiz. They heated the sandwich so that the cheese melted. Goooood stuff!!!!!

There are advantages to being old! The Yumbo was a "plain vanilla" ham and cheese as you could get; similar to the fast food ham and cheese things of today. Yummmmieee!

The Yumbo in Perth Western Australia was a massive size ham and cheese burger (or roll) made by Hungry Jacks (the Australian name for Burger King) it wasn't a sandwich. It was yum! Red Bull another local gourmet food outlet produced a competitor called the Hambo it wasn't as big but just as tasty! I used to work at Red Bull. To make one (because Hungry Jacks don't make them anymore and Red Bull no longer exists) slice a white roll in half, fold in lots of slices of shaved ham, with 2 slices of Krafty type cheese and microwave on normal for about 45 seconds. Just had one this morning. Mmmmmmmmm!!!

I fondly recall the Yumbo and a homemade variation that my mother used to serve to us kids - fried ham in the pan with cheese melted on top served on white bread.

I liked the Yumbo so much that I re-created it; I shred yellow american cheese and ham, but instead of a bun, I put it on a wrap and spray it with garlic-flavored non stick spray, it makes it get a little crunch to it... a HUGE hit in my cafe, I can't make them fast enough. There are some secrets to preparing it tho :) enjoy!

BRING BACK THE YUMBO. I STILL MISS IT. Not the same as making it yourself.

Hey Marfy, a fellow Perthy here. i loved Yumbos too and wish HJs would bring them back. I also remember the Red Bull hamburger chain. BTW every other state JS is called Burger King, only WA has Hungry Jacks because at the time there was a Burger King cafe here that wouldn't sell their name off. Yumbos were great. I also remember HJs having hot dogs too way back.

I agree, I keep thinking about those YUMBO's everyday when I'm hungry!! I wish they would bring them back! I think I will print this screen and send it to there marketing group! I get ham and cheese at Arby's with around 3 slices of ham. I used to love the ones at Hardy's but only a few Hardy's in the State of MN. Bring back the 70's and early 80's!!!! NOW!!!

I work at Mcdonalds, 10pm - 6am so yu could imagine i get a few drunk guys coming through, and just the other night a fella came in and askd for a yumbo, he was in his late 20's and he stood in drive-thru for over 20minutes telling us about this burger, the yumbo, eventually he ended up getting a double quarter pounder lol, but if someone can post a step-by-step instutions on how to make one, i could bring it to the McDonalds head office and possibly bring it back in =)

My sister lived in Puerto Rico for the last 8 months and just moved back. She says the Yumbo Burger is on the menu in PR Burger Kings and alot of people buy it.

They brought back the Yumbo, only they threw egg on there.Just tell them at the counter..."Hold the egg on my Yumbo!"
Doc - November 10, 2008 - Report this comment
Or order it without egg and say "Know what you call that?" "No. What?" "That's a Godamn Yumbo now baby!"
J.K.M. - November 11, 2008 - Report this comment
It also came with tomato because I remember as a kid I hated tomatoes so when my family ordered me a Yumbo they had to specify "no tomato". If the tomato got included I would freak out. Probably came with lettuce too.
M - November 15, 2008 - Report this comment
The YUMBO of the 20's and 80's in Perth did not have lettuce or tomatoe or any salad, simply ham and cheese in a bun, lots of cheese and lots of ham. More than you'd find on any sandwich sold in the past 25 odd years

When I was a kid in the early 70's I would go twice a month and spend the weekend with my grandmother. She would always take me to BK for lunch on Saturday and I always got the Yumbo and a fry. I had them every other Saturday for years. Renee was right. There is no comparison between doing it yourself and the original Yumbo. BK brings that back and they have a customer for life in me.
MHR - December 10, 2008 - Report this comment
Didn't they used to make it with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato and some kind of other sauce, almost like the MD Big Mac Sauce?
Ben - January 12, 2009 - Report this comment
No lettuce, tomatoes or other garbage in there. It was just ham and cheese and a bun with a few sesame seeds on it. The whole mess was glued together with the melted cheese. The ham was smoked and salty, but it tasted good to me. My experience is late 1960s, so perhaps they embellished it later on. But back then, there was just the ham and cheese.

The Yumbo, I loved that sandwich. I remember back in South Florida, I never went to McDonalds. I grew up on Burger King and I was in my late teens before I had my first Big Mac. It did not compare. I love the Yumbo to this day.

I was so addicted to these things, if there had been a 12-step YA group, I would have joined. So many seeds littered my car I could swear that birds chased me. When BK pulled the Yumbo, I was like a junkie searching for a new dealer, but nothing since has compared. Today I am celebrating Day 9,490 of being Yumbo-free, but if it's ever brought back, I'm off the wagon for sure.

Call 305-378-3535, this is BK's Consumer Relations Dept. I called today, and the lady who answered had no idea what I was talking about - so I gave them my ph# and asked if they could bring the Yumbo back. We'll see...........

Figures she wouldn't have a clue. Probably worked for Coke's marketing dept. back when they changed the formula. Long live the King!!! (only if he brings the Yumbo back)

I also remember the Yumbo from BK in So. Fla. The way I remember it is they were on a yellow (egg) bun w/ ham and WHITE american cheese. I'm pretty sure that they were heated in a new thing called a "microwave" oven and that's why they were in a styrofoam container and they were all soft and gooey. I loved those bad boys when i was a kid.

There are certain words that I do not like to say ... they just sound creepy. "Pimple" is one of those words. It's difficult for me to say "cottage cheese." And back in the day, I really hated the word "Yumbo." I went in one evening, and asked for the ham and cheese sandwich. They wouldn't GIVE it to me, unless I asked for a "Yumbo." And I did, begrudgingly ... and I haven't been back to Burger King since that day. In that time, I've hit McDonald's roughly 3,500 times.

I also loved the Yumbo and remember them in grade school and Jr. High from the late 80s. When I was in college they brought them back from some kind of promo but it only lated a couple months and was the late 80s. This is on sandwich they should have kept. It was really yummy if put BBQ sauce on it

The yumbo was the best! No lettuce-no tomato was ever part of the recipe. Some of you must have slight Altzheimers setting in. It was strictly a hot ham and cheese on a great soft bun. It was my favorite fast food back in high school (70's). I can't remember when it was pulled off the menu, but I don't like BK anymore because of it. And they have creepy commercials.
NicePerson - June 24, 2009 - Report this comment
I worked at Burger King in the mid 70's. The YUMBO was made with WHITE American cheese and thinly sliced ham. That's it. Nothing else. The sandwiches were put into a steamer. Microwaves had not been invented, yet.

The yumbo's were the best!!(Actually, the microwave oven was used by restaurants as early as 1954, the radarange was marketed for home kitchens in 1961.)

I cannot believe I found this page. I was just at dinner with my sister and somehow out of the blue I brought up how much I loved when we were kids and I would get the Yumbo sandwich when we went to BK. She didn't remember the sandwich at all and I described it to her and she thought I was making things up. I said I remembered the YUMBO well because it was one of my favorite food memories from childhood. I'm glad to see I'm not the only YUMBO lover who misses the sandwich.

Their jingle was " Have you had a yumbo yet? It will take you to Jamacia!" Seems there was a contest where you could win a trip If you bought that sandwich and it had a ticket in there or something.

Make your own - at least here in Aus - use 1 sesame seed bun such as Tip Top Hmaburger bun, 2 slices Kraft BURGER cheese slices (available but you may have to ask) handful of shaved ham. Place all in bum - wrap in paper towel or serviette and put in microwave 30 - 40 sec . Almost as good as the HJ original
