Description
Post Fortified Oat flakes were a wholesome (and, I thought, delicious) oat cereal. Nothing fancy, no marshmallow bits, no sugar coating, no free toy inside, just a tasty treat. I was too young to care about the 'healthy' part.

Fortified Oat Flakes were by far the best cereal I have ever had. If they were so good and good for you too, why did they take them off the market? Then again, being that I am the only person that has posted a comment, perhaps I just answered my own question.

It's difficult to adequately describe how delicious Post Fortified Oat Flakes were, to those who never had the pleasure of tasting it, but I'll try to do so. First, it's important to note that it wasn't a sugared or frosted cereal. There was indeed a slight sweetness to it, yet it was a sweetness that enhanced rather than hid the taste of the oats. I suspect that there was perhaps a touch of malt in the recipe. If anyone has an old box, I would appreciate some photos and a listing of the ingredients. Second, the flakes were firm and light and, although it might be said that they didn't stay crunchy very long when in milk, the cereal maintained its great taste regardless. I personally have called Post to ask them why it is no longer on the market and received a rather nebulous answer from them that hinted at the probability of a business (lack of profit?) motive that I suppose all cereal manufacturers have to make from time to time. It's a shame that people like us, who regularly and loyally sought-out this brand for its quality, perhaps didn't represent a large enough market share for Post to keep this delightful product on the shelves! A note to Post: Fortified Oat Flakes are better than a mere walk through nostalgia for those of us who enjoyed it before and who would buy it again and again, were Post to bring it back. To those who made this same search, call Post and tell them you want it back!

For years I have been looking for Fortified Oat Flakes. It was definately the best cereal I have ever had. It would be awesome if Post would bring it back. Maybe we should start a petition !! Now I can't find Alpha Bits on the shelves anymore either - I do have a thing for Oat cereals and Post always had the best !!

I bought this cereal for years. It was such a good tasting cereal I continued to buy it even though it got soggy in milk very quickly. To solve this problem I used to eat them without the milk right out of the box.

I ALSO LOVED FORTIFIED OAT FLAKES.. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS DELICIOUS CEREAL AGAIN, ALSO. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE CEREALS GETTING SOGGY..*SOME OF THE OTHER BRAND NAME CEREALS - GETS SOGGY BEFORE YOU GET HALF WAY THROUGH A SMALL BOWL WITH A BLAH TASTE AND IS LESS FILLING - AND IT HAS BEEN ON THE CEREAL SHELVES FOR 100 YEARS? WHAT IS UP WITH THAT. PLEASE BRING BACK THIS DELICIOUS FORTIFIED CEREAL - WHICH IS PROBABLY LOWER IN CARBS THAN MOST - HAS SOME FIBER - ALL OF WHICH LOW CARB DIETERS, DIABETICS, ETC. ARE LOOKING FOR IN THE HERE AND NOW.. THANK YOU.

Being a cereal junkie for most of my life (I'm 50) I have to say this was absolutly the best of all of them. A truely unique and delicious flavor. Since it didn't have sugar added and was one of the more wholesome and healthy cereals out there I would think post could find a way to market it to parents looking for a good tasting healthy alternative to the sugar laden junk most of the kids crave. One bite and the kids would be hooked. (at least some of them).
Mary Beth - May 06, 2008 - Report this comment
I LOVED this cereal. Needless to say, my mom bought it just for her but every once in awhile we got to have some. There were 8 kids in our family and the box wasn't very big so I'm sure that's why it was hers only! I was hoping it was still around somewhere so I could still buy it. Please bring it back!!!

I agree with all the comments extolling Post Oat Flakes. Coincidentally, I was prompted to Google Oat Flakes when I saw that my local stores were no longer carrying Grape Nuts Flakes (not quite up to Oat Flake standards but just about the next best thing!) It seems like every 20 years Post is looking to discontinue its best tasting cereals. Next it'll probably be Alpha Bits.
Fran - July 09, 2008 - Report this comment
The best cereal bar none ever made...I would love to know why it was discontinued...and if it ever came back it would be a solid hit...show me any other discontinued cereal that is getting this much publicity...years and years after it was produced...Ralcorp take heed!!!

I too miss Fortified Oat Flakes. Everytime I'm in the cereal isle, I look in the hopes of finding them. I loved them as a kid and an adult. I have tried all the other oat flake type cereals, they taste NOTHING like Fortified Oat Flakes. I have thrown countless full boxes of imposters away. I rarely ate any other cereal if I didn't have to. I now almost never eat cereal now, the occasional Cheerio, but it has to have a banana on it to give it some flavor!!

I also wish they would bring Post Fortified Oat Flakes back. I ate it as a Kid all the time. My Parents always bought this Cereal. It is the Best Tasting Cereal Ever. I miss it so much. I called Post a few years ago. They said, They quit making it. I told them it was the Best Cereal Ever. They should have never stopped making it. I'm 46 and I've always told my Teenage Son, how good Oat Flakes were. I sure wish he could try them.

Yep - I loved them as well. I always poured a heaping bowl and would not be discouraged by the slight sogginess at the finish.
Kathy - October 12, 2008 - Report this comment
I also have been looking for Post Fortified Oat Flakes for years. My father bought the cereal when it first came out on the market. It is the best cereal that was ever made. I had read on the box one time to try the cereal with hot milk. From that moment on that's how I used to eat it because the cereal had firmness and wasn't mushy like oatmeal is and it tasted great. It was just plain old oat flakes with nothing else in the cereal. I have been looking for a comparible cereal to buy but have been unlucky so far. I cannot have sugar due to diabetes and am always looking for a cereal with just plain (unsweetened and nothing else added) oat flakes. With all the raves about this cereal what is your reason for not bringing it back? Please answer & let everyone know what your reasons are. I don't think you have a good enough reason for not making this. Why not test market the cereal again? You may be surprised with the results. (don't leave out my state for test-marketing!!!)

Fortified Oat Flakes was the best I ever had. In fact, I dont eat cereal anymore because I cant get them. Nothing else cuts it. I used to put wheat germ on my oat flakes and that was the best cereal ever. I still remember how it tasted and its aroma. godammit someone must have the recipe for it. If this company doesnt want to make it, I am sure some others would give it a shot.

I have many fond memories of sitting down with my Dad for breakfast over a bowl of delicious Oat Flakes. Even into the early 1990's I could get them at the military commissaries, but alas, Post marketeers turned a blind eye to reality, and failed even to bring them back after the anti-carb craze diminished. Post - Hello Post - are you there? Do you have a clue?

I also loved this cereal soooo much, obviously they will not bring it back? maybe they would give us the recipe? anyone have an old box with the ingredient list? I am a chef, I can tinker with it until I get it right.
MO Oat Flake Lover - January 19, 2009 - Report this comment
Jason, The ingredient list from the early 1960's had wholegrain oat flour, sugar, soy flour, rice flour, malt flavoring, salt, artificial flavor. Sugar content was around 18.5 %. Oat flakes were advertised as "Tastes like oatmeal cookies." Look up patent 3121637 that describes Post's method of making oat/soy based cereals.

I beg you Post, bring it back nowwwwwwwww! Please!

Yes, yes, I was there too. I can see and smell the bowl full of this most wonderful stuff in front of me right now, just as it was 40 years ago. Pouring on the whole milk, and maybe just a little too much sugar. Taking the first few brown spoon fulls before it all starts to get soggy, but that's OK because then you can really get a really big pile on the spoon. Oooo I can taste it now! It's soooo good! I'll drink it down and have another bowl. Good times... I guess maybe the oats are more profitable in some other high tech product now. Just like open fields are worth more now as condo property. Even if someone started making it again it probably wouldn't be the same, not that I wouldn't try it! I don't believe I will ever get to actually enjoy the real thing again, but it is nice to dream about it. Thank you all for bringing back the memories!

Hands down the best cereal ever. To my brothers and I they were known simply as Post Oat Flakes. We grew up on those flakes in the sixties and seventies and one day they just vanished. I recall a return of the flakes in the nineties but the return was short lived. I guess if they don't come in a fantasy package and covered with sugar the average consumer wont buy them. I googled post oat flakes after watching the cereal wars on discovery and found this message board.

Fantastic Cereal, and super Post IP!!! I refused to eat anything else since the time they released this. So, it's a Winner. Is it a winner today ? I'd buy it the next day should a trial appear. What made it right.

Keep wishing Fortified Oat Flakes will be brought back.Tired of all the sweetened cereal. I'm 55 & greatly miss FOF. I would think with all the health conscience people out there it would be a great one to bring back.

My fave as a child of the 70's. Although I misunderstood the name, as in "Mom would you get some '45 oats' when you go shopping?" Best cereal ever! Bring it back!!!

I contacted Post. They just said they couldn't make them. How can this be? Are our cereals loaded with artificial ingredients that are much cheaper than real oats? You can bet they can make FOF!!

I'm 54 and remember that Fortified Oat Flakes were very delicious. My other favorite then was Rice Krinkles with little China men on the box. I haven't read all the comments, but I wonder if anybody else remembers one of the Fortified Oat Flakes commercials featuring the actor VAN JOHNSON. Thanks for letting me share this with you all.

Every time I see a commercial for any oat type cereal I long for my old favorite Fortified Oat Flakes. Why in the world did you stop making this wonderful cereal? Rest assured I would buy it every week if you would bring it back exactly the same as it was.

Holy cow! This is great! I loved this cereal and have been searching in stores and online. I wondered, do I have weird tastes? Or were they crazy to take Fortified Oat Flakes off the market? Someone please get this link to Post. I'll look into contacting them too.

My guess is the price would be too high because of the additives that are in cereals today. MAKE THEM! I'LL PAY THE PRICE!!

I still remember the taste and since my doctor recommended to eat oats to lower my cholesterol I thought what was that wonderful oat cereal from my childhood. Why did they ever stop making this tasty cereal?

What? was Post loosing money? Is that why they discontinued? is the malt too expensive? So it doesn't stay crunchy in milk, so what, eat faster. What Post VP made this decision? save a little $$ for his retirement home. Just bring it back in it's original recipe or release the copywrite on the recipe so someone else can do it.

Post obviously doesn't know or don't care when they've got a really good product worth keeping. They also made another poor decision when they dropped Blueberry Morning. It seems their R&D Dept is continually making changes for the sake of change. A very counterproductive practice.

I still find it hard to believe that this product was discontinued almost 40 years ago and it has not been re-introduced into the consumer market. Every time I have a bowl of cereal, I still think back to Post Oat Flakes... a nutritious, great tasting adult breakfast cereal... and without all the added sugar! I think Post is missing out on a niche in the market that would welcome a wonderful addition to their current product line...
