Description
A really thick ridged chip, I think that Lays made them in different flavors. My particular favorite was "The Works" They just disappeared off the market. Too bad! They rocked!

I really enjoyed O'Grady's Potato Chips (in the 80's) especially the Seasoned flavor. Then all of a sudden they were gone.I keep searching for them in different states. Are they gone for good???

These chips were especially good with a choclate shake. My Grandma made the best chocolate shakes on the planet, and I could still,to this day, make myself sick eating the two together!!!

the last time I had them was in Newfoundland in the late 1980s, but I found a close match for the sour cream and onion flavour... Humpty Dumpty sour cream and green onion "rip-l" chips. Try them... not quite as awesome... but as close as I've tasted in 20 years!

I loved the o'grady cheddar chips, I think of them often. There isn't another chip that even comes close. Would love to see them again. definitly our loss.

Great, tasty chip. Have had cravings for them for years. I wish they'd come back.

Good news, all. Today, a co-worker turned me onto Ruffle's Extra Thick Baked Potato flavor which immediately reminded me of O'Grady's Au Gratin flavor. They even smell like it used to. Frito-Lay essentially brought the O'Grady's Au Gratin chips back and re-branded them as Ruffles Extra Thick.

I was coming on here to post what the Disco Ninja did. The Ruffle's Extra Thick are great, it was like being a little kid again!

I cannot believe I found anyone who loved those chips as much as me. Will try the Extra Thick Au Gratin's because THOSE are the exact ones I loved of O'D's

My little sister and I loved these chips, especially the cheddar flavored. The last bag we ever found was at a grocery store in Grand Island, NY.

I was hoping to find out if I could order O'Grady's Au Gratin potato chips on line in bulk. I used to eat them at Baldwin-Wallace college in Ohio. Now I live in NY and I really miss them.

I sure miss these chips. I ate them as a youngster. I have found none that measure up to the taste & thickness. I wish they would bring them back soon...

WOW. I have been thinking about these chips for years and just got aroung to looking them up on the interweb to see if I was able to order some. I guess they aren't made anymore, but I am happy to see there are other chipoholics that loved them as much as I did. Gonna try the Ruffles tomorrow.

Eating the Ruffles Extra Thick Au Gratin as I am writing this..and if I close my eyes, I swear it is the eighties again. Anyone who is a skeptic...give in and give them a try, you will not be disappointed

Just bought a bag of Ruffles Thick Cut cheddar baked potato chips from the vending machine. They are basically O'Grady's repackaged with the Ruffles name. They taste like pretty much what I remember from the '80s. We used to eat these with wine coolers in high school. So '80s!

After a hard day of sloughing it around the halls of my middle school, I would come home, get myself a root beer and a bag of O'Grady's Hearty Seasoned Potato Chips, plop myself on the couch and watch the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Those were the days.:^)

I loved O'Grady's. I can still taste their rich thich flavor. I used to watch Cubs games, Harey Carey, Jody Davis and bag of O'Grady's. I am going to try the Ruffles thick cut and see if it will get me back to about 1982. What a time and what a chip.

I tried the new ruffles, they are sort of like the OG's but the ridges are wider. I had a computer class back in the 80's and the text mentioned that the OG ridges were designed by a computer. Whatever it was, those were some of the best chips I ever had. I don't know why so many of the things I liked are gone now. So sad.
pat - July 24, 2008 - Report this comment
where can these ruffles be found? i'm looking all over but they don't seem to have em where i live in mass.

My wife was telling me a story about chocolate covered potato chips. That's when the memory of O'Grady's came back. I LOVED 'EM!!!! They weren't a weak chip and had tons of flavor. I thought I was the only one who remembered them. I didn't know if it was just a Nebraska or Midwest thing.

I've had the Ruffles Extra Thick and they are close, but still not as good as the genuine O'Grady's Au Gratin I remember. I still fondly remember a weekly ritual of walking to the corner store to get 2 bags of O'Grady's and some cherry coke, going home and munching away while watching Hunter. Strange how a chip can achieve such reverence to be imprinted in our memories. I go wish they'd bring back the original O'Grady's Au Gratin.

I came across this website a little bit ago and started looking up some of these obscure foods that not many people seem to remember and was pleased to find there were others out there that remember these. And it was funny, the VERY NEXT day at work in the vending machine!! That was freaky.....anyways, yes they are good but not exactly the same as what I remember. I know we have a picture from when my husband & I were in college and there's an O'Grady's bag next to me. Everytime I see that picture I get the craving!!

Wow! I am not alone after all! I loved these chips and have searched the entire east coast for them. My favorite was the au gratin flavor, they were so thick and tasty. The closet is (but not the same)is Ruffles Sour and Cheddar.I still dream of a big bag of OGradys from the 80's!!!

Try Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut chips the lightly salted are kinda burnt and thick and sooooo good and they don't break when you dip them. The Yogurt and Dill are awesome too but any dill flavored chip is great to me. We need more dill chips!! Pringles makes a good one but they are hard to find and Eagle makes a dill ranch that is my new favorite. MORE DILL FLAVOR ON POTATO CHIPS!!!!!

My siste and I used to save our pocket money every week and come Thursday (Shopping Day) we would rush to the supermarket and buy O'Gradys. We loved them so much we wrote to the company and told them and they sent us some stickers with the blue label white writineg and red line underneath. These were the best chips I ever tasted, they werent cheap but the thickness was the best. Then they dissapeared, we were devastated, we thought they were popular and hared to get. 20 years on we still remember those chips and will always be the best there was and ever will be. Long live O'gradys. kurz@jc.com.au

in one of my previous google minings for information on the fate of these chips, i happened across a mention of them in a business class textbook that said they were discontinued because frito lay and the maker of the process used to create the special thick chips got into a fight about money and frito lay canceled the chips as a result.

I'm with everyone else, I loved these chips and still crave them. My whole family were addicted to them. I remember sitting with my family in loungeroom and watching Star Wars while eating them one ridge at a time...BRING THEM BACK LAYS!!!!

I was a sales manager in Iowa for Frito-Lay when the O'Gradys brand was launched and they were an instant hit. I doubt anyone remembers this but the chips were originally cut left to right on one side of the chip and top to bottom on the other side. The cut was fairly quickly changed to a cut similar to what you see with Ruffles. The original cut was pretty cool and necessary to thoroughly cook the chip given it's thickness. O'Gradys was unable to become a national brand and F-L eventually pulled the plug on it, but it was a huge seller in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas.

We loved them in Kentucky, too! I miss them so much! They were the only chip of that thickness and texture. I am glad so many other people enjoyed them, but sad that they no longer make them...
SteveO - July 14, 2009 - Report this comment
I read on a site that Frito Lay had to stop making them because the way they were made (super thick cut and the type of oil used etc) was no longer economical. Apparently they had to employ people to remove chips by hand that were not cut properly all to do with the way the processing was done. Such a shame. The Sour Cream ones were to die for. Everyone leave a comment on Frito lay site, maybe we'll get them back!

What can we do to bring back these chips!? I've been looking for the sour cream and onion ones for YEARS! As a travelling gymnast I happened upon some in Vancouver in 1992 long after they'd disappeared in Montreal. Haven't liked any other sour cream chip since. Come on Frito Lay, BRING THEM BACK!!!

I remember finding them at my college's snack bar in about 1984 and became instantly addicted. They were around for such a short time, but were the best chips I'd ever had outside of Pennsylvania. Pretty much every product I loved from the 70s and 80s has been discontinued. Memories!

my brother my uncle and myself all used to enjoy the hearty seasoned chips over here in connecticut and vermont i was also hoping that i would stumble upon them again. i hope if the do bring them back i hope they use the original reciepes unlike the good and fruity's that they are remaking which are nothing like we had in the 80's

My best friend and I would 'walk' trough the drive thru at the local bank and take out $5. That would be spent on O'Gradys (and Skittles).

I loved these when I was little and I totally forgot about them until tonight when I ate some Ruffles- cheddar/sour cream chips-- I, instantly, remembered O'Grady's-- so weird. When I googled it I found all these sites dedicated to finding them. Hilarious! Thanks guys!

Tha Au Gratin chip are good but they cannot be compared to O'Grady's chips. They were awesome!! I've been looking for them and am not successful.

We used to buy O'Gradys whenever we went out in our motor boat because they didn't turn into potato dust when bounced around. God they went good with a beer. Who was the genious that allowed them to go off the market.
