The eighties saw a wider variety and quicker change in clothing styles than currently. That's why I thought this list would be fun for others to read and add to, so feel free to send me any suggestions. Years are approximated, since some fashions tended to last longer in some regions opposed to other regions.

| ID# Shirts | Male/Female | Clothes | 1987 | These button down shirts were usually patterned with a pastel combinination of colors with the material sown inside-out so that the collar and folded-up shirt-sleeves showed the true, bright pattern. Usually worn untucked in the back with the back of the collar hanging down the person's back. |

| IOU Clothing | Female | Clothing Line | Late 80's-Early 90's | IOU clothing was so funny! First of all, the sweat-shirts always had a pair of jeans displayed together that would match the lettering in them perfectly. I remember having a blue IOU shirt with red letters and a nice red pair of IOU jeans to go along with it. The jeans were usually that really soft combed-cotton. The funniest thing about this clothing was that when it hit bottom, it hit hard. Anyone wearing IOU clothing after it was "out" was the laughing-stock of the school. Very dramatic fashion moment! |
| IOU shirts | Both | Clothes | 1988-1993 | Bright colored sweatshirts with the letters IOU on the front. |

| Ice cubes | Female | Shoes | 1983 | Clear plastic shoes that come in lots of colours. The shoe was flat and really slippery! They did up with a long shoelace, that wrapped around the ankle and up the calf. There were about 50 different ways to do them up. |
| Ike Jacket | Either Or | Jacket | 80s | This cool jacket actually originated long before the 80s. I only became aware of them when shopping at "Sunny's Surplus" for good 80s club clothes. Made popular by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. This jacket is olive drab wool. It comes right to the waist and has a belt. Looked great with various punk buttons and safety pins all over it. These kickin' jackets could be obtained at Army surplus stores for $5 or so. |
| Imitation Ray Bans | Both | Accessories | mid to late 80's | Cheap sunglasses with dark lenses and thick black frames. Meant to imitate those worn by Huey Lewis. |
| In and Out Urge Bumper Stickers | Both | Accessories | Mid-80's | If you have a car or a Trapper Keeper, you had to go to In and Out Burger to get one of these to cut up and flaunt. Since then the company has gone Christian and re-designed their bumper stickers. |
| International News Sweatshirts | M/F | Clothing | late 1980's | These sweatshirts came in many different solid colors and had a large International News logo in front of them. |
| Iron-on T shirts | both | clothing | early 1980's | These were the coolest kind of t-shirts in the neighborhood. Sometimes they had what's now referred to as a ringer, the different color neck and armbands, with a white shirt. The best ones had a glittery picture, like a unicorn or pegasus, and for boys (and girls) bands like Ac-Dc or Kiss. I had one that said "skate your buns off", and I wore it to the roller rink with my white skates with peach laces and matching peach pompom things that went on the shoe part of the skate, where the laces are. |
| Isotoner Slippers | Female | Isotoner Slippers | 1987-88 | For all I know Isotoner still makes these "ballet" like slippers. "Cutsey" Girls wore them instead of normal shoes to school. |
| Izod polo shirts & button down shirts | Both | Shirts | Early to mid- 80's | We wore an Izod polo shirt under an oxford cloth button down shirt - usually of the same color. Both shirts were tucked into your jeans. This look was cool for boys and girls! |
| Izod shirts | both | early 80's | When I was in high school it was popular to be preppy and someone decided that pink and green were "it". The Izod polo shirt was the ultimate - I had two. One in pink and one in kelly green. | |
| Izods | Male | Clothes | 1982 | Lacoste has a website: (bilingual french/english). Mr René Lacoste (1904-1996) was a tennis champ. The Lacoste shirts were created as early as 1933 and the polos (or so-called "izods" in english) were created in 1960. We used to call them "polos Lacoste" in French. Basically they were short-sleeved polo shirts intended to play tennis. Until the mid-eighties they were only made in bright colors such as green or pink, and white of course. but then they released other colors such as navy blue, grey, brown, dark green, red, yellow... for a total of pproximately 20 distinct colors. There were indeed 3 buttons located one above the other just before the collar (the collar itself had no button). The Lacoste logo was an alligator on the left breast. Some ladies used to wear them with the collar "put up." Polos now have 2 buttons instead of 3. I indeed remember buying some in 1989 and they already had only 2 buttons.. The alligator was turning its head towards the "outside" of the chest. There were cheap imitations made in Taiwan, and you could recognize them because they mistakingly put an alligator that was turning its head in the wrong direction, that is toward the center of the chest. There were also jokes: a factory released some polos where the alligator was on top of a second alligator. The trademark itself was a pun that was written just under the alligators: "J'accoste" instead of "Lacoste", which means in French: "I'm accosting". The real Lacoste polos were considered very classy and worn by preppies. They later were used by just everyone and stopped being a symbol of upper-class clothing. Because of that, the preppies who used to buy them now prefer to go for Ralph Lauren, even in countries like France. However there are still many Lacoste shops, and there is even one on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. thanks Lionel |
