Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with M

Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.

Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

"M.E.", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by Basement Jaxx
On their latest album, Rooty, 'Where's Your Head At', includes elements of M.E., and some of 'This Wreckage' by Gary Numan. A very good track, and used on the Tomb Raider Soundtrack.
"Mad World", Originally by Tears for Fears, Remade by Gary Jules
OK but I like the original better
"Mad World", Originally by Tears For Fears, Remade by Gary Jules
Good remake. Better than the original in my opinion. On the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack.
"Mad World", Originally by Tears For Fears, Remade by Evergreen Terrace
really good cover by evergreen terrace
"Maid Of Orleans", Originally by OMD, Remade by Atrocity
A gothic version of this classic 80s song by the German metal band "Atrocity". From their album "Werk 80", which contains a whole bunch of great metal versions of popular 80s songs. Nice singing, male and female.
"Major Tom (Coming Home)", Originally by Peter Schilling, Remade by The Space Lady
Really AWFUL! This one is crappy because it totally loses the charm that Peter's version. The Space Lady should have left this one alone because the only person that could pull off this song was Peter himself. Plus this version has really bad backround music and is repetitive!
"Making Love Out Of Nothing At All", Originally by Air Supply, Remade by Nikki A.
Totally revamped the song into a techno dance floor hit! I was very impressed!!!
"Making Plans For Nigel", Originally by XTC, Remade by Pitchshifter
Techno-thrash version. Very cool but hard to find.
"Making Plans for Nigel", Originally by XTC, Remade by Robbie Williams
I liked it, it's the b-side to his Old Before I Die single. bit less electronic sounding than the original and very listenable...you know, considering it's robbie!
"Making Plans for Nigel", Originally by XTC, Remade by Primus
I find this one particularly interesting. I have not heard the original, even though I have heard a disgusting remake by the Rembrandts which is on the XTC tribute album Testimonial Dinner. Les' voice and the bass add a unique touch to the song.
"Mama I'm Coming Home", Originally by Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by Zakk Wylde(live)
I love it!!!
"Mama Used To Say", Originally by Junior, Remade by Richard Blackwood
Nothing wrong with the new version, it's faster and it includes a rap.
"Mama Weer All Crazee Now", Originally by Quiet Riot, Remade by Angeles del Infierno
Although it was a spanish version (Estamos todos locos), this rendition of Quiet Riot's "...Weer All Crazee..." was well done. Anyone interested in checking it out can find it in ADI's album 666.
"The Man Who Sold The World", Originally by David Bowie, Remade by Nirvana
I like both versions, but the original song is by far better. I love Nirvana and all, but yeah, I liked the original version.
"Man in a Suitcase", Originally by The Police, Remade by AFI
Wow... this sounds off for AFI. They don't fit with the ska sound, but they do pull it off. I think this was an extra track on 'Answer That and Stay Fashionable', but I'm not sure. Davey's voice seems a bit higher than usual, which leads me to think that this was done VERY early in the band's career. His voice (as always) is fantastic! It's odd... but in a very good way.
"Mandy", Originally by Barry Manilo, Remade by Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies
ONce again a lack of the gimmie gimmies on this chart...
"Mandy", Originally by Barry Manilow, Remade by Westlife
the original is great ofcourse but then its just on top 29 in chart, this new version by westlife is a bit different in the end part and that it top the chart making it the top 12th westlife no.1 song
"Maneater", Originally by Hall and Oates, Remade by The Greylocks
The Greylocks love to cover great songs from the 80's. Check it out: http://www.thegreylocks.com
"Maniac", Originally by Michael Sambello, Remade by Evergreen Terrace
Good!.......................Good! It Also Whips @$$!!!!!!!!
"Manic Monday", Originally by The Bangles, Remade by Relient K
Love the cover, nice synth. Features on Punk goes 80's album, loads of good covers
"Master of Puppets", Originally by Metallica, Remade by Burden of Grief
One of the angriest and maybe Metallica's best song is covered by this death metal band, the result is very good! if you liked master of puppets because of its power and rage then dont miss this well done cover.
"Maybe I'm Amazed", Originally by Paul McCartney, Remade by Jem
Very sweet version with female vocals.
"Maybe I'm Amazed", Originally by Paul McCartney, Remade by Virgos Merlot
"Me So Horny ", Originally by 2 Live Crew, Remade by Dick Hurtz, Mike Hunt, And The Jammers
It Rocked!
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Bowling for Soup
HORRIBLE. it should have been left as it was
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Blindside
Spectacular...
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Bowling For Soup
This song was done as a cover by Bowling For Soup for the movie Sky High. It was pretty good but I like the '80s version a little better.
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Mest
Great Remake
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Jason Mraz
nice!!! :)
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Stretch Armstrong
Great song. Better than original. Even though it is redone by a punk band, I love it. It's very upbeat and more fun than the original. Stretch has a better singer, too.
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Jason Mraz
What an awesome cover. he's just so talented and did a great job for such a great song
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by The Cure
Not bad. Not Robert's best cover (Hello, I Love You was a little better I think) but I've definitely heard worse.
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Saves the Day
"Melt With You", Originally by Modern English, Remade by Jason Mraz
This song was remade by Jasn for the "50 First Dates" soundtrack. It's more upbeat than the original. It's pretty good and it's so fun to dance to.
"Mercy Mercy Me", Originally by Marvin Gaye, Remade by The Strokes
a great cover, with the strokes teaming up with eddie vedder of pearl jam.
"Message In A Bottle", Originally by The Police, Remade by Machine Head
Very excellent if you like me are highly entertained by dark covers of 80's Pop songs.
"Message In A Bottle", Originally by The Police, Remade by Excel
How come this song sounds way better when covered (i.e. machine head).
"Message In A Bottle", Originally by The Police, Remade by Gatecrasher
A techno version. Really good when the guitars-turned-synth part kicks in. Kind of eerie halfway through but still good.
"Message In A Bottle", Originally by The Police, Remade by John Mayer
A great cover song done by Mr. Mayer
"Message Of Love", Originally by The Pretenders, Remade by Saliva
Admittedly, a nu-metal Pretenders cover looks pretty repulsive on paper, but this one manages not to screw up completely. Saliva has enough energy to play without losing the catchy little hook. Plus, they save most of the screaming for the chorus. It's harder, yes ... but in this case that's not all bad.
"Metal", Originally by Gary Numan, Remade by Nine Inch Nails
Pretty cool upgrade of this song to modern industrial ... though not as hard as some of nin's stuff. There's a version of it on the "Things Falling Apart", that's very nifty.
"Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by System Of A Down
Berlin version is way better
"The Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by Bella Morte
"Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by System Of A Down
Freaking awesome, but I love System. I can't imagine where they got the idea to cover this song, but it's well done.
"The Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by System of A Down
That cover sucks. How can a "metal" band (they think they are metal but their songs are not metal)make a cover of a Pop/ New Wave band of the 80's. of course Berlin version is better. Original versions are always better!!!!!!
"The Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by System of a Down
I totally different take of the song...equally awesome!
"The Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by Alkaline Trio
I like it alot.
"The Metro", Originally by Berlin, Remade by Alkaline Trio
"Mexican Radio", Originally by Wall Of Voodoo, Remade by South Park Mexican
I liked the song from the start and had no idea he was "covering" it. However, I would never own it because he is a convicted child molestor.
"Mexican Radio", Originally by Wall of Voodoo, Remade by Authority Zero
Great remake!! Changes the lyrics a little buit all in all I love it.
"Mexican Radio", Originally by Wall Of Voodoo, Remade by Celtic Frost
Veteran swiss death metal band did this cover on thier 3rd record "Into The Pandamonium". Pretty good.
"Mexican Radio", Originally by Wall Of Voodoo, Remade by Double Drive
as good if not better than the original
"Miami", Originally by The Whispers, Remade by Will Smith
Copied of the original beat 'And the beat goes on' However still sounds good
"Million Miles Away, A", Originally by Plimsouls, Remade by Goo Goo Dolls
You can't tell that this really is a good song, before Goo Goo Dolls remade it.
"Missing You", Originally by John Waite, Remade by David Wilcox
Really really awesome folky version. David Wilcox is a genious.
"Missing You", Originally by John Waite, Remade by Flavio Cesar
Even though it is in Spanish, the song kicks ass.
"Missing You", Originally by John Waite, Remade by Brooks And Dunn
surprisingly excellent. i'd always had missing you in the back of my head and when i first heard the b&d version i thought for a second they had nicked the tune. the lyrics have minor changes, but it's really well done in my opinion.
"Missing You", Originally by John Waite, Remade by E'Voke
good tranced up female vocalled version. not bad at all!
"Missing You", Originally by John Waite, Remade by Tyler Hilton
Doesn't sound much different,but it's pretty good.
"Misty Blue", Originally by Dorothy Moore, Remade by Mary J Blige
"The Model", Originally by Kraftwerk, Remade by Rammstein
Rammstein turns this boring song something amazing! it's infinitely better than the original one!
"The Model", Originally by Kraftwerk, Remade by Rammstein
great hard fast guitar version of a very synthetic sound it works!
"Monkey Gone To Heaven", Originally by Pixies, Remade by Far
Really tired and lame cover, found on the Pixies tribute album 'Where Is My Mind?'
"More Than This", Originally by Roxy Music, Remade by Robyn Hitchcock
Beautiful rendition of an awesome original. Not better than the original, but not worse either. This song pays tribute to Brian Ferry et al with a pared down accoustic version paired with Hitchcock's haunting vocals. - Excellent!
"More Than This", Originally by Roxy Music, Remade by Norah Jones
Not bad, but nothing beats an origional.
"More Than Words", Originally by Extreme, Remade by BBMak
I think they topped the original version. The vocals are better and the guitar playing is better. It's never been released but you can download it somewhere.
"More Than Words", Originally by Extreme, Remade by Frankie J
This is by far the BEST version out. Better than the original. Frankie J's vocals in this are amazingly versatile.
"More Than Words", Originally by Extreme, Remade by Westlife
Not a bad cover, but the original version is by far better. (Sorry Westlife-fans!)
"Mothership Connection", Originally by Parliament, Remade by George Duke
If you hear any noise, its just me and the boys> hit me> you gotta get in the band. BRAVO !!! I"m sure that George would be pleased that his song sounded that damn good being covered by someone else.
"Mr. Crowley", Originally by Ozzy Osbourne, Remade by Moonspell
Again Fernando Ribeiro's voice do an excellent job with a touch of metal gothic escence to this Ozzy's song I don't like the Original song but this cover really sounds much better!!!
"Mr. Jones", Originally by Counting Crows, Remade by Punchline
very good pop punk cover of this song
"Mr. Telephone Man", Originally by New Edition, Remade by Dream
So wrong!!
"Mr. Telephone man", Originally by New Edition, Remade by Dream
I love both of the version's there hot but I be feelin' dreams a tid bit more.
"Mrs Robinson", Originally by Simon and Garfunkel, Remade by Cake
nothing impressive, sounds like your average rock cover band from your high school prom
"Mrs Robinson", Originally by Simon and Garfunkel, Remade by Lemonheads
I really like this cover. Evan Dando seemed to have had something that Simon and Garfunkel didn't.
"Mrs Robinson", Originally by Simon and Garfunkel, Remade by Lemonheads
Great cover off an already great song by Simon and Garfunkel
"Mrs Robinson", Originally by The Beatles, Remade by Weezer
This song is from long before the 80's, but if yo're putting together cover bands this song is a must have!!!!!!!!!
"Mrs. Robinson", Originally by Simon & Garfunkel, Remade by The Lemonheads
FYI, it was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads that remade this and not Weezer.
"Ms. Jackson", Originally by Outkast, Remade by The Vines
great song done ever better...not an 80s song but deserves recognition nonetheless...way better than the original...MUST listen to...
"My Best Friend's Girl", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Weezer
I stumbled upon this on Kazaa. Upon hearing it at first...it sounds like the original, but as you listen you can tell it is different. I don't have confimation on whether or not it is Weezer. I sounds like it could be them. Nevertheless, whoever sang it did a great job of sounding like The Cars lead singer, whose name escapes me right now.
"My Best Friend's Girl", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Choirboys
The Choirboys have had this in their live set for years now but they've only just released a recording of it, on their latest acoustic album. Great little version of the song from one of Australia's most enduring rock acts!
"My Best Friend's Girl", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Presidents of the United States of America
Lots of energy! Tempo changes are fanatastic! Adds a great edge to a pretty cool song.
"My Best Friends Girl", Originally by The Cars, Remade by Nirvana
It's an awesome cover. Nirvana is a great band and the cover still had that incredible rock sound.
"My Heart Will Go On", Originally by Celine Dion, Remade by A New Found Glory
excellent, realy good punkrock cover
"My Michelle", Originally by G'n'R, Remade by AFI
pretty f-in' good
"My Perogative", Originally by Bobby Brown, Remade by Britney Spears
A lot of people really don't like Britney's cover of the Bobby classic, but I actually enjoy it. Of course she can't sing very well in the least, but most superstars today can't sing, so we can't hold that against her. I think it is a very sultry take on the song and I don't mind hearing it at all.
"My Perogative", Originally by Bobby Brown, Remade by Britney Spears
Britney murdered Bobby's song.
"My Sharona", Originally by The Knack, Remade by Eldritch
A very good metal version of this classic.
"My Way", Originally by Frank Sinatra, Remade by Sex Pistols
A version with attitude, filth and fury!!
"Mysterious Ways", Originally by U2, Remade by KMFDM
KMFDM does an amazing and somewhat funny take on an 80s classic.
