Eighties Cover Songs, Songs Beginning with S
Thanks to Warren Bakay for suggesting this page to me, I hadn't even
realized until he mentioned it, the music industry is dredging up big
hits from the last decade due to a not-so-surprising lack of imagination by
the current stars. This should of course come to no suprise to
most people, some big hits of the eighties were covers
as well ("Mickey", "Der Kommisar", "You Keep Me Hanging On" (which was remade into a
hit four times so far)). So far though, most covers have been pretty
hideous. We only list songs that are originally from the eighties and are now being made
into covers. We also only list a band if they're already well known
or the group is making a lot of radio play with the remake.
Oh and to clear up a misconception a few people out there seem to be having
about this page (and sending me very nasty letters). I have no problem with
artists who do a cover of a song in concert, or because they are just
starting out and don't have enough original material of their own for a full
set of songs. As a matter of fact, cover bands can be great fun to
go and see. All groups in modern history start out this way, I own a lot of
The Beatles albums and they were the original cover group. A lot of
early rock songs were covers of old R&B tunes. It's a fact of life.

I heard echoing green's remix first, which is an EXCELLENT electronica/techno version. I also love the original. www.echocentral.com
, Originally by
Commodores, Remade by
Destiny's Child
I totally hate Destiny's Child and I think they all need to take a few more singing lessons, but I must honestly say that I really enjoyed their version of the song (thank God for digital technology) I am sure that the song would have been aweful without the blessing of technology to make their voices sound better.
, Originally by
Bad Brains, Remade by
No Doubt
Unimpressive, Gwens voice sounds whiny when trying to replicate this Hardcore classic.
, Originally by

Moby was able to do this song,(From one of the best dc punk bands ever), in his own way.
, Originally by
Christopher Cross, Remade by

Sounds exactly like the original but N SYNC replaces Christopher Cross
, Originally by
Aerosmith, Remade by
Black N Bue
Featured as a japanese bonus track to Black n Blue's debut album. It was pretty good, highly sought after by the die-hard BNB fans for collector's purposes. Still done with respect to Aerosmith. I rate it 7 out of 10!
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Flotsam & Jetsam
Doesn't stretch much from the origanal..pretty much straight up metal. was off one of there earlier albums. (late 80's early 90's)
, Originally by
Elton John, Remade by
Nickleback w/ Kid Rock
Pretty good version but not nearly as good as original
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Mellowtoy
Awesome industrial/numetal cover by this italian newcomers, on their debut album. It's got a catchy vibe and electronic sound that suits the song perfectly, though is not really hard to be classified fully as Industrial or Newmetal. Whatever, i like it. Topped italian charts for a while on 2004 fall.
, Originally by
Duran Duran, Remade by
Oliver Haze
Not so much a cover as a faster, but equally melodic recreation. This song takes on a life of it's own, while at the same time paying homage to the original. A truly well done track: what covers are MEANT to sound like!
, Originally by
English Beat, Remade by
Kristy McKay
jumpy, rockabilly fun remake. Great original, great cover
, Originally by
English Beat, Remade by
Pete Townsend
This live acoustic cover brings a whole new flavor to the song; Townsend's voice actually works for this arrangement. A fave.

, Originally by

Everybody In The House
Much more dancier than the original.
, Originally by
Laura Branigan , Remade by
Infernal
Not a bad cover at all. The original had more 'feeling' to it, but Infernal's cover is a good dance track.
, Originally by

, Originally by

Deadstar Assembly have made this song sound awesome, nice and heavy, gotta love it..
, Originally by

Paul Oakenfold does a really good job putting his classic style into this awesome 80's tune. Definately worth listening to.

This is the best cover song ever done. They took an crappy 80's song and turned it into a high energy punk song. Thrice is one of the best punk bands around and everyone should hear this song!!!!!

, Originally by

Another dance version from a Canadian(?) singer.
, Originally by
Real Life, Remade by
Pet Shop Boys
If you like Pet Shop Boys, you'll probably like this. It's basically Real Life's version slightly tweaked by the typical Pet Shop Boys sound. I'm not into the Pet Shop Boys, but I'd say their remake has a little more pump than the original.
, Originally by
Real Life, Remade by
Deadstar Assembly
Liked it.Bit of techno flare to it.
, Originally by
Real Life, Remade by

They took an amazing track and made it there own. More Aggressive sounding then original, Dearborn's vocals on it are fantastic!! Check it out, the rest of there own stuff is great too.

Very good gothic rock sound. Sounds like 80's metal. Ver impressed.
, Originally by
The Police , Remade by
Sting
Sting's first solo album "The Dream of the Blue Turtles," includes a jazzed up cover of the Police song "Shadows in the Rain," from five years earlier. The cover is so catchy that if you never heard the original, it would be very hard to get used to.
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Hooverphonic
Exceptional
, Originally by
Beastie Boys, Remade by
Barenaked Ladies
Live cover. I appreciate that the Barenaked Ladies took it upon themselves to perform a complicated hiphop song, and a classic from "Paul's Boutique," no less.
, Originally by
ZZ Top, Remade by
Brad Paisley
It comes from an album of country covers of ZZ Top hits and it's not that bad. Heck, ZZ Top even appears in the video, and so does the car and the keys that go with it!
, Originally by
Rolling Stones, Remade by
Fishbone
I have never found a recording of this but I saw Fishbone perform the song on the Conan O'Brien show a few years ago. IT ROCKED! No real change to the lyrics, Fishbone just put their skafunkrastapunk stamp on it.

Really good heavy rock version. I'd reccomend getting it.
, Originally by
Joy Division, Remade by
Miranda's Girlfriends
Starts off with great drums, then gets unlikeable for about 10 seconds, then starts sounding amazing.
, Originally by
New Order, Remade by
Arrogants
very impressive acoustic version of that 80's song (appeared on pretty in pink soundtrack). very very good to me
, Originally by
Peter Gabriel, Remade by
Don Ho
surprisingly hip cover by someone who you'd NEVER expect to cover Gabriel - to be found on the "When Pigs Fly" compilation CD.
, Originally by
Peter Gabriel, Remade by
Coal Chamber
Very excellent if you like me are highly entertained by dark covers of 80's Pop songs.
, Originally by

German industrial group do a surprisingly nice cover of the Divine classic.
, Originally by
Bad Company, Remade by
Iced Earth
Best cover song EVER.....and ive heard a lot of covers
, Originally by
Tears for Fears, Remade by
Rosetta Stone
a great goth version of the song. really industrialized and without so much crazy 80s noises, but still good.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
Very cool hard cover
, Originally by
Tears for Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
the original was one of my favorites. Disturbed gave it more of an edge, and just plained rocked.
, Originally by
Tears for Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
Fantastic.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
sounds alot better as a truely hard rock song.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Green Day
Green day is amazing at everything and anything first of all. I saw this in concert and it was amazing. Veyr uplifting. Much better than the original.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Our House
Its a very modernised version of the song. More of a club chillout track with some changed lyrics.
, Originally by
Tears for Fears, Remade by
Atrocity
Very good with male and female vocals.
, Originally by
Tears for Fears, Remade by
Sweetbox
Not bad. I think Sweetbox is from England. She sounds like R&B or maybe rap or hip hop.
, Originally by
Tears for Fears , Remade by
Disturbed
Actually really good if you liked the original. Very similar, and really not as hard as Disturbed usually gets.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
Just Awful, I cannot believe that Curt Smith let them have the get-go on letting Disturbed put this on their 2001 album. I much rather prefer Roland Orzabal sing it because he has a much better and powerful singing voice and did a better job and still can sound powerful probably singing it today. I think the cover band butchered this 1985 classic. I think the singer for Disturbed has a really awful voice like 311's Nick Hexum.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
Not as good as the original, but pretty good still.....The music of the eighties is solid, and will always stand the test of time, and will continually be re-done by bands and sampled by rappers.
, Originally by
Tears For Fears, Remade by
Disturbed
On their CD, titled The Sickness, they called the song Shout 2000. It's a harder rap metal version of the song.
, Originally by
Motley Crue, Remade by
Synical
Awsome cover!! Synical gave this song a whole new meaning.
, Originally by Laura Branigan, Remade by Jessica Andrews
, Originally by Laura Branigan, Remade by Maria McKee

Paul McCartney, Remade by
Tool
Awesome, such a lovey dovey song composed by the great McCartney, put into a brutally heavy rock song by none other than tool
, Originally by
Nine Inch Nails, Remade by
Razed In Black
Way the hell better than the original version. More 'filler sounds' if you know what I mean so it sounds more complete, but doesnt stray far from the original.
, Originally by Helmet, Remade by Deftones
, Originally by
Aretha Franklin, Remade by
Spice Girls
I like Aretha's version of this song a little better but the Spice Girls didn't do too badly a job.
, Originally by
Lennox/Franklin, Remade by
Rosetta Stone
An industrial/goth take on a below par original considering the talent involved. Rosetta have given it some much needed balls!
, Originally by
Split Enz, Remade by
The Wiggles
I'm a huge Split Enz fan and a friend of mine called me and said she saw Six Months in a Leaky Boat on one of the Wiggles children's tapes!
, Originally by
Roxette, Remade by
Mobius Loop featuring Julie Zee
A Stock and Aitken produced cover of the Roxette hit. Not a bad version incorperating synthesised guitars and europop. Quite hard to track down but worth a few plays. I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger hit.
, Originally by
Five Star, Remade by
Louise
Now this is a good cover. This is a specialy recorded song from Louise's greatest hits album. It's mixed by Almighty so its a dance song but it sounds as though it should be that way. Five Star were just a decade or so too early.
, Originally by Midnight Starr, Remade by Usher ft. Monica
, Originally by
Bronski Beat, Remade by
Plastic Noise Experience
I wouldn't have imagined that a german electro-industrial band would ever cover such a song by such a band. Surprisingly, the cover version is far superior than the original one!!! For the first time I've been able to actually understand the lyrics, even though the cover version is sung with distorted vocals. Their cover is available on the "Neural Transmission", Van Richter Records, 1995.
, Originally by
Bronski Beat, Remade by
Paradise Lost
It rocks definitely more than Bronski Beat. Awesome Cover !!!
, Originally by

, Originally by

Tori Amos
It was ok... She turned the guitar riffs into piano solos... If your into Emo you'll like it.
, Originally by
Deep Purple, Remade by
Soulfly
If you want a good heavy metal cover of this song look for the Six Feet Under version, not this...
, Originally by
Deep Purple, Remade by
Pat Boone
Yes, the Pat Boone of Gospel music fame. It can be found on the CD entitled `No More Mr. Nice Guy' which is make up entirely of Hard Rock / Metal songs done big band style with symphony and horns! Mr. Boone did this album as a joke but some of his loyal gospel fans took it so seriously they actually condemned him for it. Overall it's excellent! When you finish listening to `Smoke on the Water' be sure to check out his version of Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne)
, Originally by
Deep Purple, Remade by
Six Feet Under
This Death Metal Bands make the pitch lower than the original song and put gutural voice and it sounds great very good cover!!!
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by

A very good Metal cover! Makes the AAF version sound pointless.
, Originally by
Micheal Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
Think the cover is great, alot more frantic and hits a lot better than Jackson did.
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
awesome punk interpretation
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
Wow, you can understand the lyrics in the AAF version!
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
Fantastic.
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Antfarm
I am not a big rock fan by any means, but I was definitely able to appreciate Alien Antfarm's spin on the MjJ stunner. It is defintely a decent listen, and most rock fans would love it.
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
Better than the original! And the original is still pretty cool.
, Originally by
Michael Jackson, Remade by
Alien Ant Farm
I'm sorry, but this is one of the WORST covers that I've EVER heard in my life. The song is a Michael Jackson classic, but this band destroyed the song's credibility and mocked it a bit. It shows the little talent and potential that the band possesses. The remake SUCKS big time!
, Originally by
Skinny Puppy, Remade by
Ministry
Industrial bands just don't get enough credit. And, yeah, these two bands worked really close together as it were but the Ministry cover was really cool. The original is still one of my favorite songs.
, Originally by Black Sabbath, Remade by System Of A Down
, Originally by
The Police, Remade by
The Hippos
An awesome ska cover of this song. One of the best ska covers ever, without a doubt.
, Originally by
Peter Gabriel, Remade by
Erasure
off their 'other people's songs' cd, this cover is fabulous. what's the point of making one if it just sounds exactly like the original? these guys upped the tempo and made it one of the best dance tracks in about forever...there are several versions abounding, look for the radio edit.
, Originally by
Peter Gabriel, Remade by
Saga
Fairly straight forward approach. Excellent interpretation. A little more rock oriented than the original.
, Originally by
Neil Diamond, Remade by
The Sidewinders
Whether you're a fan of Neil Diamond or not, there's no denying this cover from The Sidewinders' hard to find 1989 debut ablum "Witchdoctor" fits the mood of the lyrics much better.
, Originally by
The Smiths, Remade by
Supergrass
very very great cover... with more power than the original one (i like the original), in the original the sound seems to fade at the end of the song, but then it start over again... the cover have the same effect, but at the start , funny
, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by
Veruca Salt
Great cover! It has the same pace and same appeal but this version includes strings which made a good addition.
, Originally by
Jackson Browne, Remade by
Yo La Tengo
well before phantom panet's version - and much better. the indie rock faves really deliver on this one!
, Originally by
Jackson Browne, Remade by
Phantom Planet
many of my friends love the new version, it's more alternative and mordern rock. I however love the old version by Jackson Browne, has that old 80's rock charm.
, Originally by

great version from Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack. More rock, very respectful
, Originally by

, Originally by

I must say that I was pretty disappointed in this version.
, Originally by

Very cool industrial version. I absolutely love it.
, Originally by Alphaville, Remade by Lichtenfels
, Originally by
Simon & Garfunkel, Remade by
The Awakening
South African goth group - does a really deep, dark version - pretty cool
, Originally by
Simon & Garfunkel, Remade by
Nevermore
Warrel Dane is amazing. The music is actually Nevermore but the lyrics to sounds are sung over it. The heavy music does the heavy lyrics justice and more. From dead heart in a dead world.
, Originally by

Modjo - Lady
I just love this song by Modjo, but was just so dissapointed when I discovered that this song was a ripoff
, Originally by
A Flock Of Seagulls, Remade by
Eleven Shadows
Actually, this wasn't half bad. It's like a gothic/industrial cover, and it was on the compilation "New Wave Goes To Hell." It gave me some good vibes. It's catchy, the lead singer's female voice is charming, and overall, it relaxes me.
, Originally by
David Bowie, Remade by
Helloween
awesome cover.
, Originally by
David Bowie, Remade by
Cold
Well covered, I feel. Bowie's original was dark, and Cold simply made it darker. It's amazing how creepy you can get with an acoustic guitar. I always felt this was begging to be covered by a band like Cold, and Scooter's voice does it a lot of justice.
, Originally by
David Bowie , Remade by
Tulus
A very strong cover, maby bether than the original
, Originally by
Madonna, Remade by
Jennifer Lopez & Black Rob
A little cover of La Isla Bonita ;)

Both versions are good, but this adds a sensual gothic touch to put it slightly in lead.
, Originally by
Donna Summer, Remade by
Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde
The cover was far better.
, Originally by
New Order, Remade by

Evil industrial sound. If you hate the original then you'll love this cover. If you like the original, the cover will blow your mind. Off a Brazilian tribute called "Essence".
, Originally by
New Order, Remade by

I pretty cool electronic version that almost makes the song sound evil. Most New Order fans dislike the original, but this version is awesome.
, Originally by

Erykah Badu
This lady covered a song of my favorite female singer. It was done as a live recording. I loved "STAY" as an original. Ms. Badu, two thumbs, and every star I can throw at you. She should have done it at the "SOUL TRAIN MUSIC AWARDS".

Biggie renamed his cover "One More Chance/Stay With Me", and it was remarkable, featuring his wife Faith Evans and Mary J. Blige. It was the biggest song of his career and still gets regular burn in the club. This was not on the Ready To Die cd but, but was actually released as a maxi-single remix.

, Originally by
Depeche Mode, Remade by

I could have burped a better cover of this song than Rammstein did. Took one of my favorite songs and turned into something you would torture political prisoners with.
, Originally by

I prefer ISC's industrial / ebm take on Depeche Mode's original, including the distorted vox and aggressive beats.
, Originally by

Off of a tribute album to Depeche Mode. I think it is the best song on the disc!
, Originally by

I loved this song, i listen to it all the time, granted, if u really loved the original, you might not think so highly of it, but to be honest, my love for 80's music was started by punk covers like this one.

Bowling For Soup
Alot of people say that MxPx was the band that did the GOOD cover of Summer of '69...really, it's Bowling For Soup. BFS did a GREAT rendition of this song. I always thought something was missing from Bryan's version of this song, and the second I heard Bowling For Soup's cover, I knew what it was. This version gives the song some energy and punch that the first one lacks. 5 stars!

Not bad. When the original came out, it was a pretty upbeat song. Listen to the original after this one, and it sounds like a ballad. If you've got a taste for punk, its a lot of fun!

while an underground song, i prefer the cover MUCH MORE than the original. it sounds more of what the song is about, than just words

Less Than Jake
Less Than Jake is the best band ever! This isn't one of their best covers, but only one from the 80s that I can think of right now. Worth a listen or two. Feature song at the end of Anthem.

Less Than Jake
Less Than Jake is like, my favorite band of all time. Hearing them play out an 80's cover like this one is awesome. Personally, the original is a bit slow, LTJ picks up the pace and creates a truly masterful cover.

a modern day version that turns this classic into an even cheesier song. pure 80s synthpop style. a guaranteed dancefloor filler everytime its played.

Awesome techno remix of the song featuring a female vocalist.

This is the worst cover in history. She butchered a great classic.

Marilyn Manson
Easily one of the greatest covers of all time. This song was always just begging to be made into a goth favorite. The dark overtones and suggestive lyrics make this song easily acceptable as a Manson cover. He gives it an edge that the song didn't have before. He really nailed it with this one. One of the few instances of a cover being better than the original. This song also began a whole crop of 80's covers. After this was a hit, Limp Bizkit made faith, Orgy made How Does it Feel?, and Dope covered Spin Me Round. It was a landmark as far as covers go.

Simply Delicious... That version was the one that should have been in the "Interview with the Vampire" soundtrack, it has a goth metal feeling about it that gives you goosebumps, the singer sounds like a seductive vampire... or the Devil himself ;)

Totally rocked out. Featured on the Interview with the Vampire soundtrack.
