Clothes of the Eighties, Clothes Beginning with H

The eighties saw a wider variety and quicker change in clothing styles than currently. That's why I thought this list would be fun for others to read and add to, so feel free to send me any suggestions. Years are approximated, since some fashions tended to last longer in some regions opposed to other regions.

Half-Fros Male Hair 198? half afro but not quite
Half-Shirt Muscle Shirts Male Clothing 198? Muscle shirts that were cut above the bellybutton to show off a guy's stomach. Not seen much anymore, except football jocks.
Handcuff Belt Both Clothing 82-85 A thick black leather belt, usually studded, but fastened in the middle with an actual pair of handcuffs. You needed a key to open same. Used for decoration over clothing. Hair/glam metal style originally but also seen on some of the crustier people.
Hang Ten Male Leather shoes late 70's - early 80's I remember wearing them, they looked like a cross between a workshoes and a walking casual. They were just the most comfortable shoes I had and quiet sturdy. They lasted a long time.
Hang Ten Both Clothing 1981 There were a whole bunch of surfer brands that caught on in the 80's. Hang Ten had a barefoot for its logo.
Hanging Belts Female Accessories 198? Lots of belts...wrapped around twice or just long enough to hang to one side.
Happy Pants Male Bright Pants 1983-1989 A pant usually made by parents, after buying the material from a linen store, as all parents did back then, excessivly popular in Australia. They are slightly loose cotton pants with excessivly bright coloured colours all over them, sometimes in repeated pattens, every kid on the block had a pair of happy pants!
Harachi sandals Female shoes late 80's Closed toe and closed back sandals made of woven strips of leather(I think), usually in white or brown. I wore them when I was a little kid and I remember them being really, really uncomfortable and blister-inducing! They were hard to get on and off and would dig into your achilles tendon area - I used to have to put a bandaid on my ankle to keep them from rubbing against it.
Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts both Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts 1987-1989 Oversize white shirt, with Hard Rock emblem in traditional or neon colors. Worn with stonewashed jeans.
Harem Pants Female Clothes 1988-1989 Every girl who had the fortune of being in the 8th grade in 1989 had 12 pairs of harem pants. They were baggy pants, tapered at the ankle, sort of like MC Hammer pants, but the on the side hip/thigh areas were two flaps that buttoned at the waist area. Even cooler when wearing hoop earrings with a key on one of them. (ala Janet Jackson rythem nation)
Harvey Male Pittsburgh Pirate hats and John Wayne shirts early 80's They were hats like the late 70's early 80's team wore. They started out solid black with gold stripes or solid gold with black stripes. Later they came in all sorts of colors. The The John Wayne shirts were made like the Civil war calvary shirts and you wore them with the bib half buttoned up. they came in all sorts of colors and you wore them with the blue or gray calvary hats.
Hawaiian Shirts Female Clothing 1981 Bright floral print camp-style shirt. Typically worn with equally bright pants.
Headbands Female Accessories 1982-1983 Fat headbands, usually made from rolled fabric, were worn across the forehead. These were made popular by Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical" video.
Heather F Rose Hips Pants Early 80s Rose Hips were cotton pants, straight legged and came in a variety of cotton and cordouroy fabrics. They had a light color topstitching on outer seams. I remember pastel colors, in particular. The cuffs were rolled up in 2-3" roles. Rose Hips was the precursor to Esprit.
High waters ? Shoes 198? ?
High-top Sneakers Both Shoes 1980's They are basically tennis shoes that go up to a low boot height and lace up all the way. If my memory is correct, red was a very popular colour.
Highwaters Female jeans 80s Highwaters were also considered floods. Usually, when a child outgrows her jeans in length, she can still wear them, but they became so high that all the other kids begin to poke fun, and say "there's a flood in here."
Himbobbers M Pants 1985 Were like capris with slits around the thigh area and elastic bands for the feet
Hockey Hair Male Hair 198? Not sure if this was from the 80s or not, short on top, long in back and very unkept looking.
Holes In Pants Female Clothing Mid 80's This was a technique we did to enhance our jeans. We would cut holes in the butt, just below the underwear line and let our cheeks peek out. Holes in the knees, thigh, butt, usually worn with pumps and bobby socks. Nice look!
Hooded Shirts Both Shirts Mid-1980s First there were hooded sweatshirts. Then the fashion designers began to put hoods on all kinds of shirts: t-shirts, blouses, etc. Another "Flashdance" inspired trend.
Hooded Sweat Jackets Male Clothing 198? Take a sweatshirt and give it a hood with drawstrings.
Hot pants female tight short shorts 1987 Tight short shorts with big belts or buckles, held up really high with usually tight button up shirts tucked into them.
Hotdoggers F/M Running Suits 1988-90 These running suits (worn for fashion not athletics) were made out of that "parachute" material. Usually tricolored, with at least one florescent color. A patch on the elbow of one sleeve featured a picture of a hotdog in a bun, wearing sunglasses lounging on a beach, with a drink. Cost over $100 dollars. Popular on Long Island.
Hound Tooth Clothing Female Clothing 1980's This was a type of checkered fabric, but the checks had "teeth". Generally found in black and white. I had a pair of pants that were black and white hounds tooth, and a multi-coloured hounds tooth blazer with a brown suede color. Rad, to the max!
Huge yellow earrings male accessories 88 Guys would wear these humongous yellow earrings with their collars up. It was all the rage!!! I still wear mine to the club scene. Oh yeah!!!
Hugo Boss Male Clothes 1984-1988 Remember the cool jackets Don Johnson made famous on Miami Vice? Hugo Boss designed the clothes for the store, and what looks cool on tv sells at the Mall.
Hukapoo Shirts Female and Male 1980's Hukapoo shirts (not sure of proper spelling) were 100 percent polyester, long lapelled, tight fitting dressier shirts with vivid designs printed all over them. Boys usually wore the animal prints-having a dreadful flashback on this one- and girls worn these best with overalls and clogs.
HyperColor Shirts ? Clothing 1989 They were a base color, like pink or blue. Wherever your body was hot (sweaty), the shirt would change color in that area to orange (pink shirt) or pink/purple (blue shirt). I think there were also green ones.
HyperWear M/F HyperWare 1988-1988 These were the "thermo" shirts that changed color when the person was warm or cold. Very trendy.
Hysteric Et Vous Womens Jacket and sweat 1986-88 Sweaters read Hysteric et Vous and had numbers on the front. The jacket had a different color for the bodice and arms. There were usually patches sewn on like stars etc. There was also usually a picture on the back of the jacket. The jacket had a varsity look to it and was worn big.
