Clothes of the Eighties, Clothes Beginning with S

The eighties saw a wider variety and quicker change in clothing styles than currently. That's why I thought this list would be fun for others to read and add to, so feel free to send me any suggestions. Years are approximated, since some fashions tended to last longer in some regions opposed to other regions.

Name Sex What When Description
SKIDZ Male Clothes 1988- Skidz were cotton/wool blend plaid pants. They had a drawstring and an elastic waist, and a yellow emblem in the shape of a yield sign on one of the butt cheeks. They were very loose and comfortable
SKIDZ pants ? Clothing 1989 ?
SKIDZ pants Both Clothes 1989 SKIDZ were the most fashionable pants any kid in the 7-15 age group catagory could wear. They were made of cotton and had many different colors and designs. Everything from stripes to checkers were seen on these pants around the streets of Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington DC. The SKINZ looked like pajama pants, they were straight legged and were tightened by a drawstring. The only way one knew they were SKIDZ, was because each had a yellow triangular sign with a car followed by skid marks(just like a street sign) on the right rear pocket.
Saddle Shoes Female Shoes 1983 ?
Safety Pins Didn't matter Accessories Mid 80's Mostly on jeans and jean jackets, you tore them up for no apparent reason and safety pinned them back together
Saira female Tuxedo Printed T-shirts 1982-1988 Lots of guys had these kind of shirts. They'd mostly wear them on special occassions like parties or high school dances. Especially the prom. It was mostly the class clowns who wore these. And believe it or not, some teen movies still have the typical class clown wearing it.
Saira female Slouch socks over Spandex 1984-95 I wear this all the time. It's basically pulling your socks over your spandex pants and scrunching them to give it a slouched look. They looke really good with a big sweater, big leather belt and granny or ankle boots.
Saktwater Sandals Female Shoes 1980 To Present Day Young girls flat, white sandals that had three straps that crossed in the middle. Now they come in many different colors, but the originals were all white.
Sally femal Unisa sandals '83-'88 These were low-heeled sandals that had thin straps that criss-crossed and tied around your ankles, and three rows of beads over the toes. At first, they only came in beige leather with white beads; in later years you could get them with different colored beads, including metallics. They were actually really comfortable and flattering; I was sorry they went out of style.
Sam & Libby Shoes Female Shoes Mid to late 1980s through 1992 Soft leather, these ballet flats were usually adorned with a bow on the toe and came in just about every color in the rainbow. Some girls owned several pairs in different colors. Most popular were black, navy, and ivory.
San Francisco Riding Gear Both Jeans 1980-1982 These were the widest of the wide-legged jeans. Only the coolest kids wore them with the mandatory eight-inch cuffs. They came with both white and red contrast stitching. The pocket designs were varied, with chevron and a low, fat X being the most popular. I really wanted a pair of Red X-ed "SFRGs" but could not find them for love or money -- so I had to settle for a pair of white chevrons. Sigh!
SanFrancisco Riders Female Jeans 1980 - 1982 They were wide legged and had a design on the back pockets.
Sara Jo Female Buf Puf Facial Sponges 1987 Oval shaped facial sponges with a rough=like texture. These were very popular for girls becasue it claimed to clean skin thoroughly.
Sassette Female Neon Fishnet Belts 1985-1986 Where I lived, these neon fishnet belts were really popular. They were just long strips of neon-colored fishnet with fringe on the ends. We wore several colors at once, either tied around the waist or tied in the hair with a big bow like a headband!
Sassette Female Butterfly Clips 198? These were NOT the butterfly-shaped clips that were popular in the 90s. These were bigger, and very plain aside from the bright colors. They were hair clips that were mostly used by hairdressers, but everyone I knew had tons of them in all colors and they were used to clip your hair back. Usually one was used on each side of the head to make "puppy ears".
Sasson & Sergio Valente jeans Female Clothing 198? ?
Satin Jackets Both Clothes 80-90 Shiny jackets that buttoned down the front. Collar and wristbands always had two stripes (usually white). Most people wore them in their school colors, or had the name of their school on the back. Ex. All green with white stripes on collar and wrist bands.
Satinised Jeans Female Clothes 1980-83? Skin-tight jeans that looked like silk. Often in black, influenced by Olivia Newton-John's outfit at the end of 'Grease'. Also seen in red and white. One manufacturer was Palm. The must-have item for the really cool girls at the disco. Usually teamed with a boob tube/strapless top.
Sbicca Female Shoes Late 70's early 80's A brand of womens shoes that started the rubber wedge heel. They were everywhere.
Scally Cap Both Hat 1980s The classic scally cap... once solely an Irish trend, soon spead... black leather styles were key.
Schmindifer's Female Pants Early 80's I remember these pants being called Schmin-di-fers (not sure if it is spelled correctly), but every hot "stoner" girl had a pair or two. They were unique because the zipper went from the top of the waist in the front straight through the crotch and all the way up to the back waist. You could even unzip both sides apart and zip on a completely different color.. If you remember them too,, can you tell me if they were called something else,, or if I am spelling it correctly. Oh and you've gotta mention those tacky Fila and Addidas jogging suits that were fresh from the flea market. People (including myself) wore jeans under the sweatsuit. The 80's were so wrong, how could anyone want to go back?
Scrunchies female accessories mid eighties to mid ninties Scrunchies were kinda like pony tail holders except they were coverd in a sort of flimsy material which was munched up. So when worn in the hair it would kind of look like a climpy cotton flower.
Sebago shoes Both Shoes 198? I remember buying my first Sebago shoes in 1987. Mine had three colours: grey, light blue, and dark blue.
Senior Lopez' ? Accessories 1982 ?
Sergio Tacchini Track suits mostly male clothes 1983-1986 Italian designer tracksuits, based on Adidas or other tennis suits but better quality zips and a wider variety of styles. Classic was light or dark blue with two narrow vertical white stripes across chest and plain blue bottoms. Other notable variants were an all white tracksuit (after the Ellesse suit) and a black and gold striped rare version.
Sergio Valente jeans Female Jeans 1987
Sergio Valente's Female Jeans 1982 I just have a description... Sergio's were jeans just like Jordache Jeans but I believe they were more of a knock off at first, they were cheaper and looked alot like Jordache jeans but eventually they came to have their own following. I saved up for four months to have my very own pair and they were so tight I had to lie on my bed and use a fork or screwdriver to get the darn things zipped up. Then you needed a friend to help you off the bed so you could stand. There was no sitting in these jeans.
Seruchi jackets Male Designer Jackets Similar To Member's Only 1985 Designer jackets similar to "Member's Only" jackets. Usually accompanied by a "Chams" muscle shirt and tight parachute pants!
Sex Wax T Shirts Both Clothing 1978 The Sex Wax (surfboard wax)company logo was simple: a large star with the words "Sex Wax" in the middle. Whether ya surfed or not, a Sex Wax t-shirt was sure to get you noticed!
Shaker Knit Sweaters Both Loose Knit Sweater 1984-90 These were loose woven sweaters that both male and females wore. Some had a "marble effect" . The main color of the sweater would be woven with black or white threads thus giving a marbled appearance. These sweaters had a tendency to get stretched out easily due to the weave ( especially the sleeves) Some came in v-necks which girls at my school would turn backwards and wear a racer back tank top underneath so it would show. The loose weave did provide some "air-conditioning so these were a good top for transitioning from Fall to Winter.
Shell Suits Both Clothing Mid/late 1980's Dodgy tracksuit made out of brightly coloured shiny shell type material
Shell Toe Adidas Male Gym Shoes mid 80's Rounded toe gym shoes like the type Run DMC wore
Shelley Female Waist length jackets with charms on the lapel 1980-1985 I had 2 favorites one was black with charms sewed to it. The charms were a key, heart , cross stuff like that. Wore a white tank top under the jacket and suede ankel boots. The second was a red waist jacket with black buttons that buttoned over the breast. Usually wore a white tank top underneath and tight blue jeans with big belt.
Shirt Tail Holders Female Accessory '88+ They did kind of look like the Ghostbusters sign, but here's how they worked: You put your shirt tail up through the first "slot", over the "bar", and down through the second "slot".

These were very practical, especially if you were wearing shorts and a long shirt. I wish they were as pop today as they were about 10 years ago.

If you didn't own one of these, you'd have to tie the end of your shirt.

Shirts which were sleeveless with the diagonal zipper ? Clothing 198? ?
Shirts with French writing on them Both Clothing 198? (i.e. L'Universitie de Paris)
Shirts with collars turned up Male Clothing 198? ?
Shirts with long flaps in the back side Female Clothing 198? ?
Shirts with sleeves ripped off Male Clothing 198? ?
Shoelaces Female Curly Shoelaces 87-89 Curly shoelaces, in florecent colors, or on penny loafers. They looked like tight curly fries. Very cool!
Shoelaces Female Colored shoelaces 1980's Assorted shoelaces with prints of characters or assorted colors and designs.
Shoelaces As Ribbons Female Accessories 1981-1982 Girls took those preppy shoelaces with whales or alligators or whatever and tied them into a bow around their necks. This went especially well with the oxford shirts that had the buttons on the collar, but I also remember girls wearing them with frilly lacy collars, too.
Shoestring Hair Clips Female Accessories late 80s A metal hair clasp worn usually in the back of the head. Made up of a bunch of colorful shoestrings tied together with invisible thread. The shoestrings made a huge ball of one inch loops. Uninflated balloons sometimes substituted shoestrings.
Shopasaurus T-shirts Both shirts late 80's T-shirts which featured cartoons of dinosaurs doing various activities. If the activity was shopping the dinosaur whould be named "Shopasaurus". Soccer was "Soccerasaurus". The artist who created these was Cliff Galbraith.
Short Talls F Late 80's Overalls that are shorts made out of denim that was sometimes printed with a design. They are worn with only one shoulder clasped. The opposite shoulder strap should be left hanging. This look can be seen on Different World episodes.
Shortalls Female Shortalls late 80's early 90's Girls used to wear these shorts style overalls called shortalls. Came in same colrs as jeans. Especially poular was light blue color. Worn with slouch socks and Keds. Wore leotards or long sleeved shirts underneath.
Shoulder Pads Female Accessory Late 80s This was a good look. Not only did every single piece of women's dress clothing come styled with gigantic, linebacker-size built-in shoulder pads, T-shirts and sweaters were equipped with them, too. If an item was sold sans-pads, never fear! Shoulder pads could be purchased in pairs and then fastened around your bra straps with a piece of velcro. You wouldn't be caught dead without shoulder pads: dressed up or down, they were worn with absolutely everything. My favourite outfit was a big T-shirt and slip-in shoulder pads worn with stirrup pants. Think of Joan Crawford & Belinda Carlisle's lovechild and you get the idea.
Shredded Blue Jeans Both Blues Jeans Late 80s We would porpusely cut up or rip our jeans to create frayed edges in the knee area, at the hemline, or the fanny (Then wore bike shorts underneath our ripped jeans)
Side Pony Tails Female Hair 1988-1990 Exactly like the regular pony tail except on the side of the head, almost right above the ear.
Silk shirts Male/Female Gym Shoes mid 80's Very breezy came in various colors and styles. Typically worn in high school or to parties.
Silver and Turquoise Belt Female Accessories 80's belts made out of metal, usually a flower pattern with turquoise center, worn over tight jeans or a long sweater, the extra lenghth of the belt always hanging down low off center.
Silver ear cuffs Female Accessories 198? ?
Skatersocks m socks 70's 80's Old school striped tube socks for the 80's!! I cant believe that I found this site www.skatersocks.com. Really cool socks! I love to wear them up to my knees!
Skids Both Pants Mid-80's Tapered pants that fit loose and had a "Slippery when Wet" sign on the but pocket. They came in all sorts of patterns, but mine came in plaid.....
Skimp Female Dress Mid 80's It was basically a long, blousey t-shirt that had a 10-12" band of material at the bottom...but it only reached down to the top of your upper thighs...we usually got sent home if we wore one to school...mine was white with Wonder Bread polka dots!
Skinny Belts Female Accessories 198? ?
Skinny Ties Both Accessories 1983 LEATHER ESPECIALLY!
Skirts w/pants female skirt layered over tight pants late 80s We wore skirts with a tight pair of pants showing underneath them.
Skorts female skirt with attached shorts under/in back 1985-89 Began as tennis attire, basically white shorts with a skirt panel that usually buttoned across the front. During the spandex/leggings craze, they evolved to ruffled/gauzy neon skirts (the shorter the better)with usually black bike shorts/stretch pants underneath, attached at the waistband. The skirts fell apart in the wash, but the bike shorts could be cut off-I kept mine for nostalgia, plus they're really comfotable PJ's!
Skumrrie F Jag Shirts 1983-86 Jag Sweatshirts at the local May Company put you in the in crowd. Basically a square designed shirt with shoulder pads (of course) and tapered at the waist. You would wear them with your jag sweat pants (patterned in geometric shapes) and finish the look with your espirit sandals (very pointy, slingbacks.) Now your looking...like totally killer!
Sky Jordan sneakers (the red, black, and white ones) ? Shoes 1984-1985 ?
Slap bracelets Both Accessories 1988-1990 Slap bracelets were about 1 inch wide, 8 or so inch long strips of plastic with a cloth covering (usually neon, since it WAS the 80s). You held one end and swung the strip to your wrist. The strip would bend and encircle your wrist as a bracelet when you let go. Experienced bracelet wearers could balance the bracelet on their wrists and then quickly raise their arms and hit the bracelet from underneath, causing it to wrap around the wrist. They were banned at my school because they caused too much of a distraction
Slinky bracelets Female Accessories 1983-1986 Pastel colored soft plastic bracelets like slinkies. I think they even had necklaces and earrings.
Slouch Boots F shoes mid 1980's These boots were made of leather that wasn't too rigid, and they would sort of scruch down instead of standing up tall like regular boots. I had black suede fringe ones that HAD to be worn with a matching marled sweater and sweater skirt (remember those) My fave were some beige leather ones by Mia that had little slits cut in all over the boot with small metal studs. The only problem was when one boot "scrunched" down more than the other, you'd forever be walking around school trying to hike up the lower one.
Slouch Sock Females Clothes 1984 - 1989? All the girls wore slouch sock in a multitude of colors all at the same time! The socks were usually layered up your leg (of course over stretch pants) and the more socks you wore at the same time the better. The only trick... Getting your foot into your LA Gear High Tops... Complete with 3 or 4 sets of laces. :o)
Slouch Socks Female Clothes the 80's Everyone wore slouch socks (even our mothers!). But not only 1 pair of slouch socks, but two. So one would match your shirt and the other your pants. For example, pink shirt, black pants, pink sock, black sock and then of course pink or black sneakers. Don't forget the matching hair scrunchy.
Slouch Socks Female Clothing 1985 Big, thick socks that came in mostly white and pastel colors, to match your Reebok aerobics sneakers (white or some pastel color, with velcro closure strips at the top instead of laces). Mostly worn with ankle-zip, ankle-length jeans (because without them there was a gap between the end of the jeans and the start of the shoe) to create a kind of sandwich effect: jeans, lots of sock, pastel sneaker. I knew a girl with sets of matching socks and Reeboks, a different set for each day of the week. Oh yeah, and if you had chubby ankles, unfortunately this was not the look for you.
A Smile Female Pants 1982 - 1984 They were like coverall and tied it the back. The A Smile emblem was on the front. I believe it was in the shape of a triangle. I had a white pair.
Snap Bands Both Bracelet 80-90's Those colorful bands that would straighten out, then wrap around your wrist when you slapped them on.
Sneakers in bright colors (not really neon) Female Shoes 1984 ?
Snickers Female Shoes 1984 Snickers were pastel colored shoes/boots that were ankle high, they were soft bottomed.
Sock Boots Female Boots Late 80s These were leather boots with faux socks sewn inside the top of them. They were often worn with one or more pairs of socks so it looked like you had on several. The "socks" usually matched the color of the boots.
Socks OVER Jeans Both Socks and Jeans 1985+ Wearing your socks pulled up over your jeans, or sweat pants. Looked damn ugly, but I must admit, kept you mighty warm in winter. I still do it in the privacy of my home.. shhh
Spandex female Brightly colored skin-tight leggings, worn with an oversized shirt that was knotted on the side and two layers of "scrunch socks" and L.A. Gear high-tops
Spandex Both Spandex Pant and Shirts 1985-1989 Made popular by Glam Metal bands (such as Poison, Motley Crue, etc..). This strechy material is skin tight, and normally is striped. Usually found now in excercise stores.
Spandex Both Pants, Tops, Etc All Eighties Tight clothing made with about 15% latex. Verrrrrry tight fitting. Big hair bands couldn't get enough of them. Think Freddie Murcury on "Queen" and David Lee Roth.
Spandex Girls Shorts Late 1980s Shorts worn under a large T-Shirt held to the side by a scrunchie or under a blue jean skirt. Shorts usually had quite a few inches of lace on the bottoms, matching the bright colors they came in.
Spiked High Heels (Stilletto Heels) Female High Heels the entire decade I can remember being in high school and wearing my spiked heels with almost about everything imaginable. My girlfriends and I were the most popular girls at Beverly Hills High, and we showed it in our fashion. We wore Our spiked heels with anything from jeans to mini-skirts. I can remeber wearing a black pair of 6 inch heels to school one day. I was the envy of evryone. I still have all of my shoes. The Spiked heels was definitely one fashion statement that I can remember being very prominent throughout the 80's.
Spiked belts, wristbands, arm bands Both Accessories 198? ?
Spiked hair Male Hair 1986-1987 ?
Spiked jeans ? Clothing 198? ?
Split Sided Shorts Both Clothes 70s-80s Started out as denim cutoffs with side seams ripped open, often to the rivet at the top of the pocket girls sometimes ripped theirs to waistband. Spuds Mackenzie shirts mostly male shirt early 80's These were the advertiser shirts for the pitbull looking white dog with the black eye. He sometimes wore a hawaiian shirt.
Spumoni young girls sportswear-sweatsuits mostly 1987? 1988? This was a line of little girls' sweatshirts and sweatpants that always had cute cuddly animals on them...easily characterized by the puffy white vinyl designs on them...I had one with a bunch of bunnies and bears at the dentist wearing braces on it and you could run your finger over the picture and feel all the bumps from the braces.
Square buttons Both Clothing Accessory 1984 Usually 2 X 2 inches, often with pictures of rockstars, favorite sayings, or unusual pictures. They were worn mostly on denim jackets, sometimes used to pin open a lapel on same jacket. Larger ones (2 x 3 horizontal or 3 x 2 vertical inches) came and went--sometimes still seen at movie theaters for advertising movies.
Sticky Fingers Jeans both pants early 80's Wide-leg jeans & cords with bright colored stitching. I think they were from the same outfit that made San Francisco Riding Gear. Wide enough to hide your shoes if you hemmed them right. The coolest dudes had 3 or 4 hem lines on the jeans after you grew and your mom let the hem out.
Stirrup pants Female Clothing 198? ?
Stone Washed Jeans Both Clothing 198? Blue or black jeans which appear to have been washed with rocks (some were, some weren't) giving an uneven texture to the color of the jeans.
Stretch Jeans Female Clothing Late 80's Super skin tight jeans with elastic woven in so they stretched. Typically denim or black, but also came in other colors. Often decorated with cutouts, lace, chains or other accoutrements. This trend survived into the early 90's as well.

Studded Denim Jackets (Bedazzler Optional) Female Jacket 1986 This was a jacket seen worn by Tiffany. However in Australia the option of adding coloured plastic gems (applied with the bedazzler)was also a common accessory.
Studs both (mainly male) 1982-1986 Small metal studs, either conical or pyramidal, of varying sizes, would be embedded into leather wristbands or jackets, usually in a block pattern imitating heavy metal bands of the period. Universally adopted by all "cliques" to some extent, studs were banned by some school districts as potential weapons. Easily produced by shop students or anybody with access to materials and tools, their popularity would not die out entirely until 1988.
Sun Britches bathing suits Bathing suits with solid bright colors and others multi-colored with geometric designs. Made out of something like rayon. Catch was suits dried out quickly and could be worn as regular shorts the rest of the day. About $20-$30

Sundek Male Surf shorts 1983-? Sundek shorts were swim trunks whose main feature was a three colored rainbow that basically went over your butt. From the back of the left leg up and over to the back of the right leg. Very popular with the surf crowd circa 1983-ish.
Sunglasses with speckled paint on the lenses (also hats) Female Accessories 198? ?
Sunshine House Shirts both early to mid 80's They were long sleeve t-shirts that were sold at a store called The Sunshine House at the beach. The sleeves had the words Sunshine House on them and the fronts of the shirts varied with different surfer type designs. The shirts came in different colors and were worn with jeans and Docksider shoes.

Swatch / Swatchguard Unisex Wristwatch 1983 onwards A wristwatch that came in a zillion different colors, patterns with different faces, numbers etc. Every one was supposed to be different! You could also buy a rubber "swatchguard" that covered the face. It looked like 2 letter "Y's" joined at the bottom.
Swatch Watch Guards M & F Accessories 1984 Little rubber guard to go over the face of your Swatch. Came in all sorts of colors, the really rad thing to do was to get two of them and twist them together and then put them on your Haley's Comet glow in the dark Swatch.

Sweats DD Female Handbag 1984-1985 Large, thick cotton jersey-knit, hobo-type handbag that came in various colors. The handle merged with the bag itself. I had a grey one. Every girl who was ANY girl had one. The only setback was that with regular use, the bag accumulated those tiny little balls on the outside that cotton knit has a tendency to form. Christmas of '84 was awesome. Inside my Sweats DD bag was my beloved paisley Swatch watch. Pretty darn cool for a 12-year old!
Sweats by Ebe-E Male Clothes 1980-1982 these were colored cotton pants with elastic waists and thin contrasting stipes down each leg. A pair might be sky blue with a yellow stripe.
