Clothes of the Eighties, Clothes Beginning with V

The eighties saw a wider variety and quicker change in clothing styles than currently. That's why I thought this list would be fun for others to read and add to, so feel free to send me any suggestions. Years are approximated, since some fashions tended to last longer in some regions opposed to other regions.

Name Sex What When Description
V Belts F Belt 1987-89 These were very wide belts that sat on the hip and came to a "V" in the front center, sometimes off to the side. They had huge buckles and usually came in pastel colors, worn with oversized button-up shirts and spandex miniskirts or leggings.
V Shaped Belts Female Belts 1980's I had several of these very popular belts. I had one that was reversible, with pink "snakeskin" on one side, and tan suede on the other side. I also had a few that were just one-sided in various colors. I normally wore these belts with big T-shirts, with the belt slung low on the hip and the top of the shirt "poufed" out. I also wore them over sweaters and the boxy, plain dresses with huge shoulder pads that fell right to the knee (some had a few buttons along the side, down near the hem of the dress).
V-Neck with Baseball Shirt Male Clothing Early 80's We used to buy a V-neck sweater in different colors and then buy the baseball shirt, (a long sleeved shirt with colored sleeves and collar, I think they're back in today) and we would wear the v-neck over the baseball shirt, of course you would color cordinate the v-neck with the appropriate baseball shirt.
V-neck sweaters from The Limited female V-neck sweaters from The Limited 1983-1986 Every girl at my highschool had one or more bright solid colored cotton v-neck sweater from The Limited. The trend was to wear these sweaters backwards so the V was in the back. Unfortunately, most girls did not have mothers who went out and bought them backless bras like my mom did - so you could see their bra strap peeking out about half the time.

Velvet Vans both Clothing early 90's EVERYONE was wearing these. They came in different colors, and they made fantastic accessories for different outfits. They always ripped on top where your toe joint bends as you walk, forcing you to buy a new pair. You had to keep them "fresh" with a special brush you bought at the shoe store.

Voivod cut Male Hairstyle Late 80s In the metal/punk crossover world in the Eastern part of Canada and elsewhere, it became fashionable to shave one SIDE of your head BALD but keep the top and back long, and then comb the hair back from the bald area, exposing the skin - as opposed to an iroquois (both sides shaved) or mohawk (only one thin strip down the center of the head). I don't know what it was called, but it was sported by the members of the band Voivod in their early days.
Vuarnets Both Accessories 1983 Sunglasses
Vuarnets Sunglasses F 1984 Ran across this one and noticed you were lacking a more complete description. Since I was a Vuarnet fanatic, I thought I'd submit one...How about "French skiing sunglasses that came in flashy colors like red, aqua yellow and black. They typically were reflective with a distinguishing dark strip vertically across the middle. They were large, rounded, with a 'cat eye' curvature and detail at the temple piece. Very cool on the beach or the slopes. Initially distributed through college students before mass distribution through SUNGLASS SPECIALTY STORES."
