The eighties saw a wider variety and quicker change in clothing styles than currently. That's why I thought this list would be fun for others to read and add to, so feel free to send me any suggestions. Years are approximated, since some fashions tended to last longer in some regions opposed to other regions.

The most popular color was black but white could be an option when sporting an all-white outfit. A MUST HAVE for any serious break dancer as it made movement easy and made "The Moonwalk" look as good as any Michael Jackson performance. |

| Keds without socks | Female | Fad | 1987-88 | You could alternate Vans w/o socks but they had to be white and it was even better if you could wear multiple pairs of socks with them. |

| Kilt | Female | skirt | 1983-86 | Part of the preppy movement, kilts (wrap around wool skirts) were held closed with a huge pin, resembling a big gold diaper pin, at about mid-thigh. Usually had fringe along the closing edge. Plaid was a must, usually a mix of red, kelly green and navy Worn with a button down shirt (preferably with a turtleneck or polo shirt under it) and a crew neck cableknit sweater (possibly tied around the shoulders). To complete the look...penny loafers (penny's in) and co-ordinating knee socks. |
| Kim | Female | Paisley Guess Jeans!! | Mid 80's | Does anyone remember when guess came out with the Paisley Jeans. They were light purple and pink and I wanted them soooo bad! Both my friend and I got on the waiting list at Dayton's for a pair and they never called! It was right after Purple Rain so probably '85-86. I wonder what happened to that list? I'm sure it disappeared when Dayton's turned into Marshal Field's and now Macy's. I still wish I had some. We bought white mocassin boots to wear with them but never got the jeans! Oh and of coarse they had the ankle zippers but we used pins to make ours even tighter! |
| Kissing Coolers | Female | Lip balm | 1985 - | Lipbalms that (I believe) were made by Maybelline, they were small and fat (rather than large and thin) and came in all sorts of flavors... smelled and tasted good enough to eat, much like the Bonne Bell lip smackers. |
| Kneesocks | Female | Assesories | 1970's & 1980's | Who can forget cable kneesocks as a staple of every girl's wardrobe? They came in a variety of different colors and were worn up to the knee with a dress or scrunched down with a pair of jeans. Although still commonly used as part of a girl's school uniform, it is a shame that they are not as prevelant anymore....I still like the looks of them. |
| Knickers | Female | Pants | 1980-82 | Short, knee length pants that buttoned at the knee, a la the 1700's came in a number of pastel colors, worn with white or light-colored nylon knee-highs, high-heeled oxford type shoes and a frilly blouse. |
| Knickers | Both (women/girls only in N. America | Pants | 1981-1983 | Pants which ended at mid-calf or just below the knee, cuffed (frequently with either snaps or elastic) to stay in place. Best worn with panty hose or bare legs and feet. First seen (for 80s purposes) as part of Princess Leia's outfit on planet Bespin for _The Empire Strikes Back_, they were also popularized by Lady Diana Spencer during her courtship and engagement. |
| Knit ties | male | accessory | 1981- | Also called sock ties. Knit in a long tube, sewn shut at the ends. A resurgence of a popular twenties look. Harrison Ford wears one in "Blade Runner". |
